    My Trip Report

Yeah, I lifted the title from a Rolling Sones tune, Sympathy for the Devil, I believe. I've been a member here for several years. The urge to post only moves me to act a few times a year. Usually, my postings are just before and after trips to my favorite place to vacation.

My 'jones' for Vegas didn't overtake me 'til June 2001. My wife had suggested that we stop in Las Vegas during a family vacation which had us spending time at http://www.chautauqua.com/ Chataquaua near Bolder Colorado, then, onto Phoenix to visit her brother and sister-in-law.

She felt that a stop in Vegas would "be on the way" to Phoenix. Of course, I quickly produced a map and revealed Vegas would be a 2 day excursion "on our way to Phoenix. Furthermore, Las Veagas is a sin filled, glitzy place that no self respecting human being would want any part of!" My wife looked at me and laughed. She said, if you ever went to Vegas, you'd love it, you self righteous *****!" I booked us two nights at the Stratosphere soon after - mostly to prove her so dead wrong. The Stratosphere seemed a good place for our (at the time 16 year old) son. Rides on top of the tower and a an arcade near the casino helped that decision. We went. I saw.

She was dead right! I love Las Vegas. We now try to make Vegas trips 2 times a year. I love Las Veags. She loves to gamble. I like to walk the strip, the Fremont, visit the off strip properties, see shows and check out what's new during every trip. She'd be happy to check into the hotel and only leave the tables and machines in order to eat. We both love Las Vegas.

I am going to be there 3 times in coming months. Once with a buddy for 3 days in May (15-17). Then, for 8 nights with my beautiful wife June 13-20. And, finally in July (30-31) with some friends from Germany for two nights during our "western swing" trip. That trip will include a stop at http://www.palodurocanyon.com/ Palo Duro Canyon in the Texas Panhandle. We want them to experience the incredible production "Texas" at the outdoor theatre in the Canyon. We will then head over to Taos, NM for three nights at http://www.elmontesagrado.com/ El Monte Sagrado - an exquisite lodge. After Vegas we spend two nights at http://www.grandcanyonlodges.com/Maswil-412.html Mawsik Lodge very near the rim in Grand Canyon National Park. Whew! it ought to be an awesome trip.

But, the real reason for this post is to let you know how much I love being in this community of Vegas lovers. Yet, I've never revealed much about myself to the board. I've met The Hurricane and love him like a brother. I've also spent time with peanutmnm, RossW and the extreme extrovert DocAl. A wonderful evening with all of those characters in the Parasol Up bar at Wynn is the only redeeming memory of my trip last December. On that ocassion my trip ended with two days in bed and running to the facilites after eating at the Ellis Island restuarant with those same characters. I may go back to Ellis Island sometime in the next thousand years. But, not sure yet!

My name is Scott Penrod. I was born in San Antonio, Texas in March of 1953. I had some very red hair until most of the hair on top of head fell out. After a pretty fun, but often mispent young adult period in my life, I wandered back to the church of my childhood; Christ Episcopal in S.A. I became a bit of a zealot for Jesus in my mid- 30's and at the age of 37 was enrolled in seminary. I studied theolgy at the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas. Previously, I had received my B.A. from The University of Texas at Austin. I love Austin - but, not as much as Vegas. In the year of our Lord 1993 I was ordined as a minister of the Gospel in my home parish. I have served congregations in Edna, Texas; several in San Antonio and am currently Rector of a fine church in the Rio Grande Valley.

My love of Vegas does intrigue some of my collegues and the lay folk I encounter in my priesthood. There are some obvious incongruencies(sp). But, I just love Las Vegas. So be it! or Amen!

Well, there it is. I'm out of the closet. And I can't wait to post my next TR. Which will have to be in late May. 'Cause after my May 15-17 trip, I'm headed for a 8 night stay at a monastery in northern New Mexico. Vegas and a monastery back to back - seems incredibily natural to me?

Happy journeys to you all. Especially, your jaunts to Vegas, Baby!

    Hey Mikey!

Mike - Sorry I didn't respond sooner. I haven't spent anytime on the boards in a couple of weeks. I'll be out there in about 19 days, May 15-18. I'll get out to Sunset Station at least one night. My buddy Chuck and I are at Imperial Palace the first night then two at RedRock. Shoot me an email so we can arrange to spend some time being goofy.
