This is informational only. Just thought I would post our experience. If you don't have access to the WAX, it changes things. But for those staying downtown, it might worth considering.

We rented a mid size car for 4 days from Dollar for $109 in Oct. The more we thought about it, we decided we didn’t need it that long and it would be sitting in the lot. Plus renting it at the airport, we wouldn’t get our hotel limo ride each way, which just makes everything so simple at arrival/departure. So we cancelled.

Checked the hotels downtowns that have car rentals and Advantage inside MSS was the cheapest at $47.39 for a one day for a Chevy Cobalt. Tried Budget & Avis and both were higher. So I booked that.

Then I got to thinking how much would it be for a two day rental if I picked it up at the airport. Since we’re downtown, easy to catch the WAX bus for $2 and be at the airport in a little over 30 minutes.

Ended up with a midsize from Dollar for $28.56, add in all the fees and taxes etc, final total $53 for a midsize, for two days. Plus $2 ea way for the WAX, so $57.

This is very similar to my situation. Since I am staying at the Jockey Club, a trip to the grocery store can save me a little money. (snacks, beer, pop, cereal)

I searched prices (and still check a few times a week) . I finally settled on getting the rental car from the Airport through Dollar. The lowest price I have found is $14 + taxes, for a total of $26.23. I usually spend about $20 after tip for the cab ride to JC, so this was a no brainer.

In the past, I have used the Dollar counter at Bellagio (it's now an Avis, I think) The closest dollar counter is at Treasure Island. But, when I checked the rates to pick up at the airport and drop off at TI, there was an additional $10+ in fees.

So, I will be picking up the car at the airport on Thurs, do my grocery run, and maybe hit a few off strip casinos. Then I will return it to the Airport and take a shuttle back to the strip. I called the Dollar counter in Vegas and they confirmed that they have shuttle drivers that could take me back to the strip for free. If not, I will just take the bus. The South Strip terminal is just a few blocks away.

We pretty much only stay DT. Looking into costs of DT rental for a couple days versus just renting right away from the airport, airport pretty much always wins. Actually, ALWAYS has when combined with coupons. In fact, a couple trips ago where we stayed for 3 nights DT, our rental from the airport was like $30. Total. We used a coupon which actually made the pre-tax rental fees -$5.

Vegas is strange is this regard. Airport rentals have lots of extra fees, but daily rate is low. Hotels have less fees, but rate is high.

Personally, in this situation, I would rent from the airport in the first case, even if slightly higher. Taking the bus to the airport is too much of a pain for this old guy. Just me.

I just struggled with this dilemma last week on my trip to Aria.
I could get a 5 day rental from the airport for the same price or less than a 2 day at Aria. Both were from Avis.
I only needed a car for a couple days.
I don't like paying the higher rate but I absolutely hate the rental car center experience at the airport.

Throw your bags on the bus at the terminal
Take your bags off the bus at the rental center
    Stand in line
    Get you car(finally)
Drag your bags to the car
    Drive to your hotel

So I reserved from Avis at the hotel.Jumped in a cab at the airport and we were at Aria in 10 minutes.
Not for everybody but it works for me.

The few times I have rented, I have used Dollar and signed up for the Dollar Express account. So, no standing in line.
