Alamo's web site has the below information listed under Policies - Additional Driver

    Additional Driver

    ● All additional drivers must meet all rental requirements.

    ● Additional drivers must appear at the rental counter with the primary renter.

    ● Additional drivers must sign the rental agreement.

    ● An additional daily fee may apply for any Additional Drivers.

    ● The additional driver can only be added to the contract at the pick up location.

Note: State law in California, Illinois, Missouri, Nevada, Oregon, and Wisconsin allow the spouse to be an automatic authorized driver as long as renter requirements are met.

Not speaking for OP, but my question is, "Can I skip the counter and add my wife as a driver at the toll booth?"

I know with Enterprise and Hertz as long as the additional driver is your spouse then it doesn't matter but with most of the others I think you have to add at counter.

The same with Budget. On our last trip, they wouldn't even let me sign the contract as an additional driver..."Spouse? You're automatic!" Made me uncomfortable, but I ended up not driving that trip anyway.

    Cheers,
    Kelly

Avis was the same on my last trip, I asked about adding domestic partner and they said it was automatic and didn't need to be added

if you're renting from the airport I think a lot of them have the computerized check-in systems, you can just add your additional driver from there.
we rented from Alamo at SFO and I just added my wife as the driver at no charge, took a few seconds.

Somebody here posted the NRS cite a while back. Apparently it's State law that a legal spouse is an authorized driver.
