While visiting last Thursday FSE was fenced off and caterers and street performers and bottles and bottles of liquor wine and beer brought in. People were directed around the fenced off areas as they were setting up. The Nugget was the property that was responsible for this party. I asked several of the employees and security guards what it was all about and the only thing that came out of their mouths were- corporate event, don't know who.
They had put up giant letters that spelled out Happy Birthday starting at the LVC all the way to the crosswalk in front of the nugget. Soon bus after bus arrived dropping off people wearing badges that read "WE ARE" and the name of the partygoer. I finally asked one who it was they worked for and was told ABBVIE, a bio-pharm company.
I asked another if they were a publically traded company and was told yes. I told him I was glad I was not a shareholder. Ever wonder why your health care and drug prices are so high- here is part of the answer. An employee from La Bayou told me they spent upwards of 3 million to party with their 4000 employees who were bussed in from Caesars Palace- can only imagine what ABBVIE spent there.
Bottom line it was a huge pain in the ass navigating around the fenced off areas to get from one side of the FSE to the other.

If they can write off the cost of these parties and not have to pay tax on the cost it might be a very smart financial way to reward employees. As the marginal tax rate gets higher for high end employees you will see more of their compensation shifted to tax-free health care and junkets. I see this with doctors. They are in a 50% marginal rates so they take their vacations as tax-free CE seminars in Hawaii or Med Cruises.

Keep the employees happy. My stock has been on fire. Now if my company would just send us to Las Vegas.

I would much rather see a company like this throw a big party than some 16 year old ****** bags dad throw them a million dollar party on MTV.

Last year they had some sort of political party happening downtown. Starting early in the morning, the Nugget starting putting up fences and pretty much blocked off the centre of Fremont, leaving about a 3 foot wide space on each side for people to get through. By night time, it was pretty jammed.

I was surprised that one casino is allowed to take over the street like that. It made it very congested and extremely difficult to walk through. Funny thing though, there was a very light crowd for the party inside the fence. They could have got by with taking up just a third of the space for the number of people who attended. Plus, they block it off for the whole day when the actual event only lasted about 2 hours. PITA!

If it was in October, I think we were there for that as well and it was a royal PIA to get around there that day.

WOW... i work in the industry and my upper management complains about buying us breakfast for our staff meetings. I think I need to work for them.

I did look up the company and Abbvie is the "new" pharmaceutical division of Abbott labratories... which is one of the worlds largest pharmaceutical companies. I have heard recently that they were breaking the company apart due to their blockbuster drug Humera was coming off patent, so they didn't want a potential loss of revenue there to effect the rest of the company. So this was probably either a party for them or they probably came out with a new drug. That being said abbott has always been know to do a lot for their employees in terms of "team building" and to keep the general morale up. And realistically $3M is nothing for them.... like the company I work for has the potential to make $4M a day from my site alone at full production and we have multiple sites making different products.

Yup it was October. It's probably safe to say we bumped into each other down there. It would have been almost impossible not to!
