    My Trip Report

    Deciding Where To Go

First things first. Local casinos don’t interest me all that much. I’m not saying that we won’t go, but I keep coming back to the idea that “they just aren’t Vegas.” I like Biloxi okay, we’ve had fun in Bossier City, Coushatta is a fave, and Lake Charles is okay…but there is only one Las Vegas!! (Okay, more than one according to the maps…but you know what I mean)…

This trip is for my wife and I to enjoy a little “together alone time” after a long summer and fall. I’m not going to say it has been hard, but it has been busy. Our last child is in his senior year and is playing football, so there has been a lot to do. If you don’t understand how big “Friday Night Lights” is around the state of Texas, you’ve missed something special. It has been a fine season and he’ll be completely bummed out (so will we!!) when his team is done…but basketball does start for him the next day…more busy weeks to come…

The original plan was to head out on a cruise but I started to feel like I’d just rather go to Vegas again. The cruise was not to ports that we really “have to” see; it was based more on timing than on ports. I am sure it would be great, but we decided Vegas would be even better.

    Then the planning started…

    Hotel Selection

We are not big players. I usually start at about $40-$50 bets on the craps tables and she does $1-$1.50 a spin on slot. We are also not incredibly loyal to MGM, CET, or any other property. Our favorite hotel is Aria, but we’ve stayed in a good number of other places, too. Our play gets us some offers but not too many that cover a full trip (and little or no food money).

I made reservations at Aria (2 nights comped), Planet Hollywood (4 nights comped), Tropicana (3 nights comped) and actually had an offer from Stratosphere for five nights in what I would call a mini-suite, a limo, and some food $$$. That kind of fell through when the host left and no one answered my emails or calls for a long time…and then the one who did respond sad that she need to get my written offer “approved.” The heck with that—no way I am starting off with a vibe of being ignored and then needing “approval”…

I also reached out to Yolla @ Plaza and I think she would have come through with a good offer matching or bettering the Stratosphere, but we just didn’t get it done in time. I will call her next time first. Well, that is if she is still there…so many hosts moving all the time for one reason or another.

So…Planet Hollywood it is…Hunter was very nice to get it set up for me in spite of changes in dates, thoughts of moving between hotels, etc. We decided we needed to stay at one hotel and go from there to all the other places we like to play.

    The Plan Changes…

Our original plan was to arrive in Vegas on the 7th and stay until the 12th. Then an “evite” turned up that changed our plans a bit. It turns out that one of my friends decided to throw a big birthday party for his wife on the 7th…in New Orleans!! These are two of our favorite people in the world and not going wasn’t even a possibility.

We’re going to watch football on Friday night, fly over to New Orleans, stay on a CET rate at the New Orleans Marriott, and enjoy the festivities…seated dinner at a nice place for 20 or so and then some music and dancing at the Foundation Room in the House of Blues…

It’ll be a late night…did I mention we head off to Vegas at 8 a.m. on Sunday?

    Some Luv

This is one of those times I love Southwest—no change fees and lots of flexibility. They may not fit everyone’s “style”, and my wife may hate not having an assigned seat, but they are the best from my point of view. My wife needs to learn to like them even more…it is very possible that we’ll earn a “Companion Pass” for next year by the end of the year.

    Free Play and Such…

It looks like we can get around $200 in free/match play and food on the trip…

TI offered $15 if not staying ($75 with a stay)
The D offered $50 in slot play, and two match plays…$25 and $5 plus $25 in food
Golden Gate offered $50 in slot play and $25 in food

    Plus…

El Cortez offers 5% in free play for withdrawals at their ATM. We could get a few bucks from that.

    Other Discounts/Offers

There might also be a few age-related discounts along the way AND we are going to cash in some MyVegas rewards. Nothing much there, as we just don’t play that much.

I know some people don't care to do this, but I have contacted the credit folks for Planet Hollywood (I think they are all in one place for the CET empire in Vegas, but I am not sure) and sent them the info to verify my cashier's check before our arrival. I honestly don't want to pay ATM fees and my credit union seems inflexible about the daily card limit (which would not be enough for one gambling day for budgeting purposes), so this is the best way for me. YMMV. I don't mind carrying around money but it also isn't what I like to do, plus we have a partying stop in New Orleans, so this gets the money there for my use. I just go to the cage, give them the check, and get markers at the tables...very easy.

The limo has been arranged. We are using Presidential. They have always provided us solid service in a timely manner; why change companies? We enjoy the bottle of cheap champagne and the drivers know how to take their time getting to hotels that are close to the airport. It is just a nice way to arrive; everyone who can should do it at least once!! Of course, that once for us made it a regular thing...

Football tonight...New Orleans tomorrow night...and finally off to Vegas on Sunday!!

I don't think I will be able to concentrate at work today!

Saturday, November 8th—Partying in the Big Easy

We left Houston at 12:20 p.m. and flew uncomfortably through a weather front for the entire trip over to New Orleans. I was glad to be on the ground again after the bumpy trip. The flight attendants never left their seats after strapping in at takeoff and I don’t think there was an entire minute of smoot flight the whole way over.

    I need a drink…

We had booked a room at the New Orleans Marriott via Total Rewards for $69. This was a great savings over the rate the party goers got of $179…but we all know we have more than paid for any room price breaks we get!!!

I booked a limo through Airport Limousine. The price ($61) was okay for the distance but the limo was trashed. The carpet was frayed and warn and the limo looked like crap inside. It sure wasn’t Presidential Limo!! The ride to the hotel was fine and we were quickly checked in and in our room. We had a few minutes so we headed down and enjoyed a glass of wine before getting ready for the party.

The party itself was awesome. The host had already held a “Scavenger Hunt” on Friday night and an airboat ride on Saturday morning for those who arrived earlier. There were about 20 of us together for the party, all in from Houston, Michigan, or Ohio.

There was an open bar cocktail hour, a fantastic sit down dinner with some of the best food I have had in a long time, a concert in the Foundation Room at House of Blues…and an open bar after the party. Great times with great friends!!!

Sunday was already started when we got to sleep and the alarm clock was set way too early, but we rallied and got on our way to the airport at 5 a.m. for our 7:15 a.m. flight. Breakfast at the airport (not very good, but what do you expect) and we’re off to Vegas!!!

It was a great flight once we got out of the storm; that only lasted a few minutes and we got in a nap on the way out…soon, we could see the Grand Canyon and getting ready to land…
