    My Trip Report

This trip commemorated the 50th anniversary of my first trip to Las Vegas back in the fall of 1966. Rather than post a lot of words, I'll post a bunch of pictures for your viewing pleasure. It was also a trip to get a couple of Bucket List items out of the way.

Our American Airlines flight left Philadelphia on time and arrived 20 minutes early in Las Vegas and was totally uneventful.

We picked up our Alamo rental (Hyundai Santa Fe) and were on our way a short time after landing. Did some quick supply shopping at a local Walmart before checking to the Bellagio. The room was booked using a promotion from the Borgata in Atlantic City. We were immediately upgraded to a 1 bedroom, living room, 3 bathroom suite with a wet bar.

After a long day of travel we decided to just hang around the hotel and unwind from the travel. It was a loooong day.

    Day 2 - 6/5/2016

Today was a day for our first road trip. We went to Jamm's Restaurant on Rainbow for breakfast. Jamm's is a simple, reasonably priced place with a variety of good food. http://www.jammsrestaurant.com/

Then it was off to Mt. Charleston, the first bucket list item. It is beautiful up there and quite a few degrees cooler than down in the valley. It was now time to check off the second bucket list item; off to Area 51. What a ride! A lot of desert with some amazing surprises along the way including two large lakes surrounded by cattle and horse ranches in the middle of the desert about half way to Area 51. There is a wildlife refuge here next to the lakes. There is a Sinclair gas station that serves pretty good food as well. Take my advice, if you need gas, food or water get it here before yo proceed because there is absolutely zippo within a few miles until you get to Rachel.

It is hard to visualize how desolate it is out there until you're standing in the middle of it all. The famous black mailbox is gone, the only thing there now is a post with a bunch of words scrawled on the base. The Feds were watching us as we approached and looked a bit menacing as we got closer. And then they made it clear that we should turn around, which we did and were followed to make sure we were leaving. And my lovely wife said to me "Are you crazy!?"

Two bucket list items in one day, not bad.

    Day 3 - 6/6/2016

Checked out of the Bellagio and into Caesars. We used the Diamond Reception which was very, very nice. The people were gracious and professional. We got the Augustus Tower with a Fountain View. Our room was amazing and convenient to the pools, buffet and casino. After a lot of driving yesterday we decided to stay around the hotel and just relax a bit.

Day 3A - Then and Now.

Below are two pictures of Caesars that my wife took in July 1967 on our Honeymoon (we could not afford to get them developed until sometime in 1968). I went across the Strip and tried to capture pictures from today from the same angle without getting killed by a car. I got sort of close. Wow! A lot can change in almost 50 years.

    Day 4 - 6/7/2016

Another road trip. First over to Hash House a Go Go on Sahara for breakfast. We ordered the Trucker Special, a giant blueberry hotcake, 2 eggs and bacon. We split it, I had the eggs and 1 piece of bacon plus a small piece of the hotcake. There still was plenty leftover after we finished. Too big for normal folks, I think. Out to Valley of Fire for some touring then back to the Strip via the road along Lake Mead. Back to Caesars for some pool time and to get cleaned up for our ride on the High Roller. We both enjoyed the ride.

    Day 5 - 6/8/2016

A lazy day, pool time, casino time getting ready for a busy afternoon / evening. Went across the street to Harrah's to catch the Big Elvis show in the Piano Bar. We played a little until it was time to eat. A light supper at Toby Keith's topped off by a deep fried Twinkie. We had a great waitress named Michelle. Played a little more until show time. Went up to the showroom to see Million Dollar Quartet which we both enjoyed. While watching the show I couldn't help but reminisce about how fortunate I was to see these guys (Elvis, Johnny, Jerry Lee and Carl) perform over the years.

    Day 6 - 6/9/2016

Went back to Jamm's for breakfast and then downtown to collect some free play from the Golden Nugget. Spent the better part of the day walking around while my wife played the slots. I watched a pretty good Michael Jackson street performer. Back to Caesars for a nice dinner and some casino time.

    Day 7 and 8 - 6/10 and 611//2016

I was pretty much exhausted after this week. My wife doesn't walk too well these days so I did most of the running around for the two of us. It was fun, I got in a lot of exercise. Today was a very lazy day, a lot of time at the pool followed by a nice lunch and an afternoon of slots at Caesars and the Flamingo. We went over to Paris for dinner, it was wonderful. We usually stay at Paris and like it very much.

Saturday is get away day. We were lucky enough to have a late check-out. Hung around Caesars for the better part of the day before heading off to the airport in the evening. For supper checked off another bucket list item. Had my first In and Out Burger.

Took the car back and off to Philly, a red eye arrived in PHL at 6AM 15 minutes early. It was a fun and fast week.

Wow, Wizard! You've got a long history with Vegas - thanks for sharing the old with the new pics! Congrats on your 50th Vegas anniversary and looks like you and your wife have a milestone anniversary to look forward to next year as well. Thanks for a very interesting TR - love the side trips! (BTW, small world, I had an aunt who lived on a farm near Souderton not too far from Harleysville) that I visited as a child - I'm originally from Carbon County right off the turnpike).

Loved your report and how you still enjoy Las Vegas after 50 years. Seems like you navigated the crowds and craziness and just did your thing
