We're staying at the Orleans again. Love it, but we've never made it downtown! So, we're going to stay down there the last 2 nights.

What is comparable to the Orleans downtown? We need a nice size bathroom, comfortable beds and clean floors. :) We also need to feel safe walking around at night. We love the idea of being able to hit many places in one night.

I really prefer to stay up off the street at least a few floors. Any advice?

Golden Nugget would be your best bet. Most of the other hotels downtown are dumps, but the GN is a 4 star hotel. I've stayed there many times and I am always satisfied.

I'm a strip person and was very impressed with GN.

I'm not sure I'd compare any downtown properties to The Orleans, but the Golden Nugget is the class of the area and I recommend it. Well located to get to all the other places you'll want to visit downtown. Lots of food options on property as well.

The Golden Nugget is starting to look it's age. The Downtown Grand is brand new. Everything is clean and it really is a nice looking place. The staff is very friendly as well. It'll probably cost you a fraction of what the Nugget will.

I suspect Golden Nugget might fill the need for more bathroom/vanity space. And then consider FSE noise in your room choice. Spend some time looking at room pictures for the different hotels downtown to make sure too.

Speaken like a person who hasnt stayed DT in a long time, or if they have, only at the GN. Dump is not what I would call any of the hotels downtown, older rooms in some places yes, but many places have newly renovated rooms that are as nice as some strip properties that immediately come to mind!

I understand that the Golden Nugget would be appropriate.

A couple of weeks ago, I stayed in room 1636 at the D Hotel/Casino.

Nice bathroom. No street noise. Two queen beds. Quite clean. Room safe.

VERY good location -- walk right out onto Fremont Street safely 24 hours per day.

Anyway, it might be an option if the Nugget is booked up or too expensive .

    Have fun!

Addendum: By "room safe", I meant that there is a safe in the room.

However, I did feel safe there!

Like robert, I was very satisfied with the room at the D. Downtown Grand is new and has a "modern" sink but not much counter space. The D has a big vanity for women to spread out their toiletries and makeup.

I agree with Iu25, there are many downtown hotels that are far from dumps. I am a Nugget fan and think it is still a nice property. If you were looking for a value play, check out any of the Boyd properties.

Since you normally stay at Orleans, I assume you have a BConnected card. At the Boyd properties downtown you will get discounts or maybe even comped rooms. Since bathroom size is important to you, Fremont is out. Not sure about the bathrooms at Cal or MSS.

The others have covered the base hotel recommendation - the GN has what you're looking for and I'm not sure the other downtown hotels you'll like very much. Most of the others are older (though remodeled) and that tends to mean smallish bathrooms.

As far as safety goes, I've always felt safe walking on Fremont St. any time of the day. The usual big city/crowded spaces cautions apply. And make no mistake, Fremont does get VERY crowded at times - especially at night, especially during the shows.

    Have fun!

I have never felt unsafe on Fremont street but walking from to MSS at 6am one day it was pretty sketchy.

Maybe 7-8 years ago, but last 5-6 times I have stayed downtown there has been nothing to worry about. You will always walk by a homeless guy asking for change, but that is the extent of the uncomfortableness any more. Downtown is really cleaned up! I remember the days wwhen walking to the Spike or Western was like playing Russian Roulette!

I will be arriving for a solo / convention trip during the same time. If you would feel safer walking around downtown with a great guy , let me know.

Am I the only one who saw the thread title on the main VMB page ( 2 women-1st time...)& thought this was a completely different topic? :wink2:

    Seriously though - here are my thoughts on the matter;
With a bconnected account, I'd call the Fremont - yes, Fremont. The bathrooms are small, but you may very well be able to get two adjoining rooms & each have a bathroom...and even assuming that they're not comped, those 2 rooms may be less than one room at the Nugget.

The Nugget is a nice place. I don't gamble there much though, even when I've stayed there.

If the 'bathroom size' thing is the main issue, I'd have to give the nod to 'theD', as the rooms are quite nice, with 'normal-sized' bathrooms, at a far better rate than the Nugget.

I would stay on Fremont for two female first-timers. That rules out the DTG, the Cal & MSS. Be sure to make that stroll while you're there, though. You can then decide if Ogden feels 'safe' enough to stay back a block from FSE for your next trip.
I've known women who were perfectly comfortable with the stroll, and others (who are more the Wynn/Encore/Palazzo/Venetian type) who were uncomfortable with it at night.
I think you should assess the situation yourself during this trip. If you've ever well-handled the overpass-walkway bums/characters, porn-slappers, time-share hawkers & general LA-dooshbaggery on the strip, the bums you may run across downtown will be a piece of cake.
    Good luck!

Wow, Topcard has a really good idea. Maybe call Boyd's and talk to them about it. That opens up quite a few properties downtown and you might even score some comps.

There is nothing unsafe, or nothing that even appears unsafe about the walk to the Downtown Grand. 3rd Street is very well lit and usually very populated now. A lot has changed in recent years, and you're just as safe on 3rd Street as you are under the canopy.

I'm sure you're right. I've not even been downtown since the DTG opened... I just was thinking about the stroll down Casino Center, between Binion's & the Fremont, to Ogden & turning right to DTG...or left to the Cal and/or MSS...as well as the walk from MSS on Main to Fremont.

I don't consider Ogden to be "unsafe" at all...but I have certainly been there with/heard-from women who found the walk (late at night/early AM) from the Cal back to the Nugget using Casino Center, or from Ogden to Fremont using Main, to be uncomfortable for them.
