    My Trip Report

We decided to split this trip with 2 nights at the Golden Nugget and 3 comped nights at the Rio. We're a couple in our Mid-40's with a 10 year old child, so when we can get a way for a few days of "personal parent time" we jump on it! I love Downtown, Hubby prefers strip. Best of both worlds! Heat extremes are forecasted for our entire trip, 110-115 degrees, should be interesting. But it's a dry heat, right?

We've stayed in the Gold Tower before at GN, did the SummerBlast deal this trip for 2 nights in the Carson. Other than the longer walk from the casino, the rooms are identical. Arrived about 8:30 Friday night, pretty quick check-in and off to dump our bags and get our first drink! We usually just play some VP for a few cold beers at the Nugget and then head out to greener (gambling) pastures.

This trip I had done my downtown research in advance and had a few places I really wanted to go see. First Stop: The Plaza. Casino is fairly nice, won a little bit here on Blazing 7's. Ok, onward! I always wanted to go see the Main Street Station..we hoofed it on down there in the blazing heat (95 degrees at 10pm..What!) and entered the blessed coolness. First thing, got our B-connected cards. Super nice lady at the counter..we are from Washington State, near the "Twilight" town of Forks, so we often get a lot of comments on Bella and Edward. We're not fans, but we're used to the reference. This lady was gaga for them and wants to move to Forks immediately. Ah, we don't really recommend it. Ok, got our cards, lets go gamble a bit. Beautiful old-school casino. Hubby likes Hot Shot Progressive and I jump around on Hangover, Blazing 7's, and whatever catches my eye. An hour later and we're both up 200 bucks. Score! We wander over the pedestrian bridge to the California and I played MegaBucks for a while, Hubby hit up his Wheel of Fortune 25Cent game..chaching! Both up another couple of hundred.

We've been imbibing in the "free" beers for a while, time for some junk food. Let's go check out the coindroppers at Mermaids. Sit down, get our plastic half-cup of flat beer and start hitting the WOF games. Hubby hits for 120 dollars worth of coin. Nice! Ok, lets have some junk food. Deep fried twinkie? No, I go for the White Castle sliders and hubby gets a corn dog and fries. Eat standing up among the hoards of twenty-somethings that seem ridicuously overdressed to be eating this stuff standing up. Popular midnight snack place.

We both worked today before flying to Vegas so we're losing steam at this point..wander back through a couple of casino's and end up at Binions. Won a little bit more on a "Ladder" type slot, liked the game but couldn't find it anywhere else the whole trip. Head back to the GN and throw 5 dollars into the giant slot near the door. I just love the thought of this machine..I've never seen anyone win anything on it but it's fun anyway. Sit down for a bit more VP at the bar, friendly bartenders and nice patrons. Get a couple flushes, straights, no Quads or Royals.. Time for bed!
Tomorrow, El Cortez, Gold Spike and more of Downtown Fun. Brett Michaels is playing the free Rock of Vegas show, should be a madhouse.

Great read so far. There's nothing else quite like the feeling of winning on your first night! Looking forward to the rest of the story.

    Day 2

Slept in till 8:30, which is actually a miracle for me..I am a chronic early riser. Hubby still asleep so I start drinking coffee. Thankfully I came prepared with a 10 pack of Starbucks Sumatra K-cups. 9 dollars for 3 Green Mountain K-Cups? No thank you, Golden Nugget.

Hubby wakes an hour later and we lounge around until around 10, shower up and head downstairs for Bloody Marys. Excellent! Not too spicy. Play a little more VP and head over to 4 Queens, I want to see what's on the Tix 4 Tonight list. Nothing really strikes my fancy so we head into the DFitz to see the remodeling. The whole exterior is torn up and boarded over but we find an entrance. Long bar looks nice, but I've heard about their paytables so we skip it and go upstairs to watch Sigma Derby for a while and play some coindroppers. Little drips and drabs of wins..Vue Bar balcony is boarded up and torn off so no Bloody Marys on the deck this time. Hang out till about noon and head over to the El Cortez.

We hadn't made it over here last time. Definitely an "older" crowd..lots of walkers and Jazzy action at this place. Sat in a quiet cigar bar for a while and chatted with the bartender and a local gal for a while. Wandered around and slot-hopped. Hubby found a new favorite game, Wizard Slots and I tried the Lords of the Rings. I actually enjoyed this game..and won about 90 bucks on it. Lots of loud video and music clips from the movies. Cocktail waitresses were older and fully clothed and on top of the drinks at a good pace. Nice! Cashed out at the cage and staggered back to Fremont about 2:30. Stopped and got a few slices of pizza at the window vendor and headed up for a nap. You've got to pace yourself in Vegas!

Woke up around 6 and headed downstairs to check out the music venues on Fremont. Lots of great cover bands and the crowd was starting to really build up in advance of Brett Michaels. Watched a few light shows and meandered up and down the street, checking on our favorite impersonators like Spock Guy and my personal favorite King Leonidis guy, bare butt and all. We ate a few things here and there but nothing memorable. By 8pm the intersection at 4 Queens was impassable. I've never seen it this packed! Warm up band for Brett is playing, sounds pretty good but we can't really stand anywhere comfortably without getting jostled and shoved. I'm 5'2 so I'm not digging this at all.

We squeeze through a couple of casinos and end up at the Las Vegas Club..played a little slots and won a few bucks..we hung out here for another hour or so and thought we'd at least try to hear Brett sing from the fringes. OMG, too many people to even walk! Worse than earlier. We decided to head off to the Gold Spike. I am not a Poison fanatic, I was definitely an 80's girl but now its just not so cool to be in the mosh pit. I needed to exit the sweaty, crowded masses ASAP.

Gold Spike was dead~no one in here at all! Played WOF for a few minutes and walked the back streets over to MSS again. Hung out a few hours until after midnight and wandered back to GN through Golden Gate and the Fremont, hit up Mermaids and LaBayou for some crappy flat beer again, grabbed some snacks from ABC and off to bed we went.

    Yup, feeling old.

Bonus, Hubby found a TITO from Las Vegas Club for 120 bucks in his pocket that he forgot to cash out. Guess we'll have to go back tomorrow!
