    My Trip Report

This is my first TR, so I will try to be as entertaining as all of you Vegas veterans.

A little background: My wife and I are taking this trip to celebrate our 5th anniversary. We decided a few years ago that we would do a big anniversary trip every 5 years. We have two small children (1 and 3), so we decided Vegas (without the kids of course) would be our 5th anniversary trip. We were joined on this trip by some of our really close friends. We have done a Vegas trip together once before and had a blast that time as well. My wife's good friend from college is also coming with a bunch of his friends to celebrate his 30th bday. We would be renewing our vows this trip and everyone would be joining us for that.

    Wednesday 7/30:
Flew direct via Southwest out of Milwaukee at 11:40 CST. My wife is not much a flyer so she needed some liquid courage to get on the plane. Plane was on time and we left shortly after 11:40.

    20140730_094921.jpg 20140730_112136.jpg

Fairly uneventful flight. A little rough on the descent, but I've experienced much worse. Landed on time in Vegas, had a Presidential stretch limo booked as a surprise for my wife. She was definitely surprised... as was I when I saw that they upgraded us to an Escalade Limo. Champagne and the rose was a nice touch (my first time with Presidential).

    20140730_142308.jpg

I had the driver stop at the Las Vegas sign on the way in because I had another surprise for my wife. She had joked that since we were renewing our vows that I should re-propose to her as well. So I went out and bought a gaudy plastic light up ring and got down on one knee on front of the LV sign. She LOVED it.

    20140730_140654.jpg

Arrived at the Flamingo almost exactly one hour after the plane landed (these guys are good). We were booked in a Fab Deluxe Room. Got the TR Visa back in April so I stopped by the TR desk to pick up my new platinum card. Bypassed the LOOONG check in line and went straight to the Platinum/Diamond room. Was all set to try the $20 trick, but my one friend (J) arrived the day before and my other friend and his wife (B and N) were not comfortable trying the $20 trick and wanted to get all three of our rooms near each other. So we ended up in a handicap accessible king Fab Deluxe room because it was ready when we checked in. It was so far away from the elevator that the check in girl was like..."are you sure you want this room?" She also made it a point to tell me there were GO rooms available. :bang: In hindsight, I should have said screw it and gone for the GO room.

The room sucked. I think it would have been OK if it weren't a handicap room. The walk-in shower leaked everywhere. There wasn't a closet to hang clothes in and the safe was in some dinky excuse for a cabinet that wobbled. There was only a 3 foot wide counter in the bathroom too. View was the the pool and habitat area which i was honestly OK with. It was quiet at night and in the mornings. Oh yeah, and did I mention I had to walk a mile to get to my room?

We settled in and hung out with our friends. They had been at the pool all day and we had just landed so I was itching to get a drink in me and to start losing money! My cousin is a CW at the Quad, so the plan was to go next door and see her until her shift ended at 4:00, then make a liquor store run.

Now, a little background on me as a gambler...I am a low roller and have pretty much stuck to slots, VP, and a little blackjack in the past, mostly because I didn't know how to play anything else. When we booked this trip in January, I decided I was going to do some research and learn how to play some new games. I downloaded all kinds of apps on my iPad and had been playing for over six months. I decided that I hate slots because I have NEVER won anything on them. The one game I found that I like is Pai Gow. It's perfect for a low roller like me because I can make my money last a while.

So I sit down at a Pai Gow table at the Quad...first time ever playing REAL Pai Gow... and proceed to win about $40 in about 30 minutes. My cousin finished her shift and I cashed out up $40 in my first couple hours in Vegas.

We walked through the Linq for the first time on the way to her car. I have to be honest...I was a little underwhelmed by the Linq. Everyone has raved about how great it is. It was nice looking and clean. But I don't come to Vegas to shop, so it didn't really do anything for me. Sorry! The High Roller is impressive though...we didn't ride it this time. Maybe next time.

    20140730_163631.jpg

After a liquor store run it was time to party. We went back to the room to pre-game for a little bit then we headed downtown for the night. Ate at Lillie's at Golden Nugget. It was outstanding. The beef tenderloin melted in my mouth and the scallops were huge! To top it off, our chef was hilarious and kept making fun of my cousin whose boyfriend hadn't shown up yet. Played a little Pai Gow and won a little more. I bought in for a hundo so when I colored up I got a black chip and felt like a baller.

    IMG_4666 (2).jpg

After Golden Nugget we walked up and down Fremont for a bit. It seemed crowded for a Wednesday night. There was a camera crew outside a limo waiting for someone to get out. We waited for a little while, but decided it wasn't worth our time to see some C-List reality star get out of a limo.

We ended up at the Fremont which was old, but the BJ dealers were cool. My friends had settled into a Super Fun 21 table. If you've never played this, it's pretty much BJ with all kinds of crazy rules. First thing that will piss off most VMBers is that BJ pays 1:1...that's right, not even 6:5. If you get a diamond suited BJ, however, it pays 2:1. You can double down anytime...there were rules with winning on 6 or 7 card hands under 20, automatically winning on 6 or 7 card 21's...something like that. Anyway, big house edge but it was $5 minimum (good for us low-rollers) and we had the entire table to ourselves which was fun. We had a blast and played for close to four hours at the same table. Ended up $30 for the session...$70 for the day. Rode the Deuce back to the strip and passed out around 4:30am.

    Thursday 7/31:
Woke up at about 8:30am. We were doing the Paris breakfast buffet with our group at 9:30 so we had to shower and get ready. Walked from Flamingo to Paris...nice easy walk and not too hot yet. Stopped by the TR desk in Paris to start our 2 free Buffet of Buffets passes, courtesy of the TR Visa card. Wandered to the back of Paris and...holy crap, what a line! So we get in line and I notice a sign that says "Platinum, Diamond, and 7 Stars Entrance." JACKPOT! We go into the little room...I double check that it's OK that I'm the only Platinum member in my group of 5, and we're seated in less than five minutes...including the other three paying.

Paris breakfast buffet was amazing! Crepe station and omelet station were outstanding. Lots of other stuff too. I was pretty hungover and on 4 hours of sleep, but I stuffed myself silly. HIGHLY recommend.

After breakfast the plan was to cruise the strip all day and casino hop. Stopped in at PH and promptly lost $50 playing the craps machine. Don't know if you've ever played it before, but I swear it's rigged. I've never played live craps...only on my iPad app. This was a nice way for me to ease into it. Craps is extremely intimidating. But I was determined to try live craps at some point this trip.

After PH, we went across to Cosmo. I had never been in there before. I was impressed. Nice casino...clean and not too smoky. Everything just seems nice. Played one of those roulette machines and I won $45. Playing the $3 minimum...my wife and I would always play our birthdays (24 and 31) straight up and we hit each about 3-4 times.

    20140731_121536.jpg

After Cosmo we went to Aria. My main purpose for going in there was to pick up my MLife card. I don't know what it is, but the Aria casino does nothing for me. I'm just not a fan and I don't really care to gamble there.

We walked through Aria to Monte Carlo (we would discover the tram later) and decided to redeem our Fuel the Duel myVegas reward for Thursday night. Originally, we were going to do Saturday...but decided on Thursday instead. Sat down at some $5 BJ and proceeded to just LOSE. Played at MC for about an hour and then walked down to NYNY then across the bridge to MGM. There was a line about 3 people deep for the Lion's Share, so I decided not to wait. We all headed back to Flamingo for some grub and a nap.

Tried to sleep but couldn't, so I wandered down to the casino and found myself in the Margaritaville Casino. I LOVED this place. This would become by go-to place for the rest of the trip. The dealers were all super cool...drink service was quick and bikini clad...what was there not to like? I wanted to play some $5 BJ, but the table was full. I decided to sit down and play some Pai Gow to see if I could continue my good Pai Gow fortune. As with Pai Gow, unless you're playing the fortune bonus, it's tough to really make any money. Beers were flowing and that CW made some $$ off of me. My wife texts me at about 5:30 asking where I am. She says she'll be down in a few so we can catch the shuttle to the Rio for the seafood buffet. I managed to win maybe $50-60 total. Not too sure at this point because the night starts to get a little hazy. Needless to say, Pai Gow has been my game this trip. Wife meets me in the casino and we head off to catch the shuttle.

There was no line at the Rio seafood buffet which surprised me. I didn't even have to show off my shiny platinum card. This buffet was excellent. It's still a buffet, so you can't go into expecting a world-class seafood experience. We both ate our fair share of lobster and crab legs. Definitely worth the $30 upgrade ($15 each) for the BoB pass. After dinner we cabbed it to Monte Carlo for Fuel the Duel.

OK...I promised myself I'd do a write up on this experience because you don't see a ton about it on this message board. It's obviously the most popular myVegas reward due to the $100 bar tab. I had one and my wife had one so we had $200 to share for our whole group. There was about 13 of us total and since we were only really friends with like 6 of them, we only "payed" for those 6 to drink.

    Fuel the Duel:
Service: Service was TERRIBLE. While I don't 100% completely blame our server, she was not very good. If you work in a bar that has tons and tons of beers on tap, you need to know a thing or two about them. I asked for an Oberon and she brought me an Oval?? My wife ordered Strong Bow and she had no idea what that was. Adding to the not so great server was the fact that she had about half of the tables in the bar. I kinda felt bad for her...she never stopped moving the entire night. Also, the set up of the place isn't great because some beers are only at certain areas of the bar...hence, more running around by our server. She was really slow, so we started ordering 2-3 rounds at a time. We got good and drunk and she did a very good job of keeping an eye on our total for us to make sure we didn't go over $200. We still tipped her well...$60 on a $200 bar tab that myVegas paid for. Like I said...not all her fault, but still not great.

Pianos: Wow...these guys were just not that entertaining. The karaoke portion of it was just weird. They would sing songs and not really try to get the crowd into it. Their jokes weren't funny. I have seen some really good dueling pianos and these guys were just not good and pretty boring.

Booze: Selection was outstanding and prices were good as far as Vegas is concerned. :drunk:
Tip: Get this reward...it's great! BUT...if you're planning on redeeming this award, stay FAR away from the pianos. I should have listened to all of you guys... :cuss:

After Fuel the Duel we were all feeling NO pain and headed back to Flamingo. I played some more Pai Gow at Margaritaville and I think I won? Who knows...maybe $20? Then to bed...big day Friday. Vow renewal!!

    Nice report so far.

Yeah, that Paris breakfast buffet line can be brutal. Its such a visible line and everyone always looks depressed.

My favorite picture in you TR are the frosty beverages at the airport. Its the simple things in life.:woohoo:

Sorry for the delay ...this trip reports are a lot of work! Anyway, happy to share because I know how much I enjoy reading other people's TR's.

    Friday 8/1: Vow Renewal
Woke up Friday morning and used the last of our 24 hour buffet pass at the Flamingo buffet since it was right downstairs. Pretty average as far as breakfast buffets go. Enjoyed the free mimosa and preferred seating (thanks Platinum) and fueled up for the day.

    20140801_093041.jpg

This being our actual wedding anniversary, my wife and I exchanged anniversary presents.

    20140801_085001.jpg
    Guess which one's mine...

Actually, she was mad at me for getting her something because this trip was supposed to be out gifts to each other. The plan for the day was to head to the pool for a bit, get a couple's massage, then get ready for the vow renewal. Pool was fun...I expected it to be more crowded, but it wasn't too bad. Not the crazy atmosphere I was expecting either. Granted it was early...maybe 10:00-11:00 am, but it was fun. Massage at noon which was nice. I decided to use the spa facilities to shower and shave instead of my crappy shower in my room. I get a text from my wife telling me I need to come up to the room because one of our friends from home sent us a present.

    20140801_130453.jpg

This was a nice way to start our pre-wedding shenanigans. We finished the bucket of beer and headed to O'Sheas to meet up with everyone to pre-game before the ceremony. Had some beers...did some shots...played some more $5 BJ. Pretty sure I lost...not sure because we were all feeling pretty good at this point. Complimentary RT limo picked us up at the Quad to go to Graceland Wedding Chapel.

    20140801_155137.jpg

Graceland was awesome! We had decided on doing a Luau theme for the vow renewal, so everyone came in their finest Hawaiian shirts and we supplied the leis for everyone. Elvis was great and we did the traditional vows and the Elvis vows. After the ceremony Elvis stuck around for some photos with us as a couple, then the whole group. It was pretty short from beginning to end...maybe 10 minutes? Afterwards, they have a little courtyard off to the side that we congregated in and took more pictures. It was a lot of fun. We hopped back in the limo and headed back to Quad/Flamingo area.

We were on the priority seating list at Margaritaville. They don't do reservations, so this was our best bet. We waited maybe 10-15 min for a table. We had 13 in our party and we were in the main area underneath the airplane. Food was good and service was even better. Hats off to our server for dealing with 13 drunk idiots in Hawaiian attire. Close to the end of dinner, the guys on stilts came out and made balloon hats for EVERYONE in our party. They were fun.

    20140801_170508.jpg 20140801_182040.jpg

After dinner things get a little hazy. We hung out for a bit at the Margaritaville casino. Some people went back to O'Sheas. Eventually we made out way over to Ellis Island for some karaoke. I sang White Wedding by Billy Idol (seemed appropriate). Karaoke was ok...the setup was a little weird. The bar area is L shaped and you can't really see the stage from the part we were sitting in. It seemed to be a lot of locals singing and they would usually get 2-3 turns before anyone else got a second song to sing. Anyway, we had fun. The bathroom at EI is literally in the opposite corner as the karaoke bar. Each time I would walk back there, I'd walk past an empty craps table. The dealers were like, "come on man, come and play a little." So I said, what the hell. If you've never played live craps before...doing it at a $5 table with just you and the dealers is the way to do it. These guys were GREAT and did a great job of teaching me! Best part about it was I was winning. I would stay there for a few rolls. Once I crapped or sevened out, I would go back to karaoke. Finally we left the karaoke and I got to play some more craps until they shut it down at midnight. Played some $5 BJ after that, then we headed back to the Flamingo. I'm pretty sure I was up a decent amount when we left EI, but I have no idea how much.

Back at Flamingo I walked my wife back to our room and then headed back to Margaritaville to play some Pai Gow. Note to self...don't play Pai Gow when you're really hammered. Whatever I won that night between BJ and craps I lost playing Pai Gow. Probably had one of the coolest dealers I've ever had (and I'm pretty sure I tipped him like $50) which made it that much more enjoyable. If you're going to lose, might as well have fun while you're doing it. Anyway, I don't remember walking back to my room, but I woke up in the correct place the next morning so that's a plus.

Friday was definitely the most fun day, but I would pay for it on Saturday. I will try to wrap up the TR tomorrow...thanks for reading!

I love your report and wish you both Happy Anniversary! My daughter is a singer and I hardly ever get to her performances so when we are in Vegas or anywhere that has karaoke I usually guilt her into going. I have found that if you take your song selection and wrap a 10.00 or 20.00 around it and give it directly to dj somehow you get to the top of the list pretty quick. This has been very helpful when there is a huge local crowd.

    Saturday 8/2:
This would be our last full day in Vegas. Most of our friends were leaving today, so we decided it would be our couple day. This would also be myVegas reward day. We each had a roller coaster pass for NYNY, $75 off $150 at Tender, and $50 at Times Square Piano bar.

As I said in my Friday report, I hit it pretty hard the previous night so I was pretty worse for wear when my wife woke me up for breakfast Saturday morning. Since my friends were leaving at different times during the day, we decided to do one last group breakfast. We wanted to do Mon Ami Gabi, but waited too long to get a reservation. We ended up eating at the Tropical Breeze Cafe in the Flamingo across from the buffet. It was your typical breakfast cafe with bacon, eggs, omelettes, pancakes etc. I had biscuits and gravy in the hopes it would cure my hangover, but no such luck. It was good...what you would expect from your local mom and pop breakfast cafe. The weirdest thing happened right towards the end of our meal. All of a sudden, the lights go out and we hear this siren. It wasn't like a fire alarm, but more like a tornado siren (my midwest people know what I'm talking about). The servers were very nonchalant about it saying, "It's just a test. This happens all the time." A test of what?? Anyway, it's a good thing we all had cash because the registers were down.

It's like 10am at this point, so we say goodbye to my one friend who has a noon flight and try to head back to the room. My other friends were putting their stuff in our room so they could check out then we were going to head to the pool for a bit before they had to leave. We get to the elevators in the habitat tower and security is blocking it off saying that the power is out and elevators aren't working. They said the other elevators and the rest of the hotel/casino is fine, so we need to use them to get upstairs. It was so weird. If you were in the casino, you'd never guess half the hotel was without power. We took the other elevators up and made the loooong walk all the way across the hotel to the habitat tower to our room. We walked past the Go rooms being cleaned...lights on like nothing had happened. As soon as we cross into the habitat tower, we were greeted with the emergency lights. Get to our room and thankfully the key reader still worked...but that was it. Water wasn't working and still no electricity. Changed into our suits and headed to the pool.

When we get down there, the pool is also out of power. They aren't letting anyone in the pool because the water can't circulate. We waited for probably an hour (2 hours since the power went out) and finally the power came back on. No one seemed to know what happened, but I would find out later from my cousin who works at the Quad that they lost power too...the WHOLE casino!! Must have been some sort of power grid disruption or something.

    image_2 (2).jpg
    Kinda eerie...

We swam for a bit and then it was time for my friends to leave so we went back up to the room. They left around 2:30 and we got ready for our night on the town. I'm still hungover at this point too, but a shower did make me feel a bit better. We decided we'd make our way to NYNY for our roller coaster ride, then make our way to Luxor for dinner at Tender. We had Zumanity tickets too, so the plan was to use our $50 at Times Square before the 10:00 show.

We left Flamingo and walked through the Cromwell but didn't play at all. Nice place...good vibe to it. We made our way across the bridges to Bellagio and caught a fountain show. All That Jazz was the music...never disappointing! Then we went through the Bellagio and checked out the conservatory which I had never been to before. It was nice and I was starting to feel a little better. Then, we caught the tram to Monte Carlo and found our way to NYNY. Rode the roller coaster which had some awesome views up the strip. It was probably the first time I've been on a roller coaster in like 5 years, and I was scared I was going to get sick because of being hungover but I held it together. It was a lot of fun...good use of 15,000 LP's.

After NYNY, we walked to over to Excalibur and caught the tram to Mandalay Bay, then back to Luxor. Didn't find out until later that the tram to MB and the tram to Luxor pick up at different parts at Excalibur. Got to Luxor and had to wait in line to get my myVegas reward loaded onto my MLife card. For some reason 6:00 pm on a Saturday night is a very popular time to visit the MLife desk. I had to wait about 15-20 minutes. Oh well. We got to Tender...good thing I made a reso, cause they were telling people 45 minute wait even though it didn't seem that busy. The food was good, but the service was OUTSTANDING!! My wife and I each got the surf and turf special. 8 oz filet and scallops. Steak was a little chewy, but the scallops were great! We got two sides to split...good thing we did because they were huge. Garlic mashed potatoes were some of the best I've had. Great experience...I would definitely come back.

After dinner, we meandered around the casino a bit. Played some slots, some VP and the video roulette game again. Played our birthdays and kept winning. We even tried our kids' birthdays this time too...my daughter had a lucky b-day, my son not so much. Cashed out and took the tram back to Excalibur and made the walk across to NYNY for some drinks at Times Square then Zumanity.

The piano players at Times Square were awesome. However, I wasn't a big fan of the setup of the place. It seemed like way too small a venue for dueling pianos. There was a section with tables ($20 per person to sit) and a standing room only section by the bar. We stood since we'd only be there about 30-40 minutes. Like I said...the guys were good, but not a big fan of the bar itself. Headed to Zumanity at about 9:30 and only had to wait a bit to get in and to our seats. Our seats were really good. Just a little right of center about 9 rows back...close enough to get a strawberry before the show started. This show was awesome!! Hilarious and entertaining and VERY inappropriate. All of the "volunteers" they brought up on stage were great. One woman near the end of the show was celebrating her 50th bday and she got WAY into the final "simulation" scene. It was a lot of fun...highly recommend. I'm pretty sure the guy sitting next to me was with his mom... awkward. She seemed to like the show, but he seemed uncomfortable the whole time. Definitely a couples show.

After Zumanity, my cousin picked us up and we hit Fremont St one last time. Went to bed around 2:30 am.

    Sunday 8/3:
Last day in Vegas...so sad. Since I was so hungover all day Saturday, I didn't really drink much so I didn't feel like death Sunday morning which is a good thing. Checked out at Flamingo and left our stuff with the bell desk. We got in at Mon Ami Gabi and got a great table on the patio overlooking the strip and the Bellagio.

I had a crepe, my wife had eggs benedict...both were outstanding. Best breakfast BY FAR in Vegas. The limo was picking us at 1:30 pm so we had some time to souvenir shop for our kids and our parents (who watched the kids so we could go on our trip). We also gambled for a bit at Paris...lost about $20-30. Headed back to Flamingo so I could play at Margaritaville one last time. When we got there, the BJ tables were full and Pai Gow wasn't running yet. It was about 11:00, so the craps table was $5 minimum. I decided to play and won money on the first two shooters. Won a few pass line bets with odds plus a hard eight twice. Then it was my turn. I put my $5 pass line bet down, and since I was shooting...went for the $5 fire bet too. First roll...snake eyes. Dammit... after my roll they were raising the minimum to $10 so I took my roll as a sign to move on. Was about to sit down at the Pai Gow table (which was open now) but decided to sit down at Mississippi Stud instead. I had played Mississippi stud on my iPad, but this was the first time doing it live. Mississippi Stud is all about being able to withstand the ups and downs and learning when NOT to chase cards. I hit a couple nice hands and finished up just over $100. The guy sitting next to me hit 4OAK the day before and won $10,000. I was happy with my $100.

Presidential was there promptly at 1:30 and we made the sad trip back to the airport. Flight was home was uneventful.

"Bye bye Vegas! Until next time..."
    -----------------
We had a great trip with some of our great friends and really enjoyed ourselves. I figure we got about $375 in comps from myVegas rewards and I came home with about $100 less than I started with in my gambling budget. That's a win for me! This was the first time I really made sure to use my reward cards at the different casinos and made a point to sign up for one at every new casino we went to. Hopefully the teaser offers come in soon, because I definitely didn't gamble enough to get any great offers. I feel like I was so prepared for this trip from all the research I did on this board. My only regret I have is not seeing the Bellagio fountain show at night...I can live with that one. Other than that, we did everything we wanted to do and had a blast doing it.

    Things I learned:
    • How to sucessfully navigate the hotels/casinos and move about the strip efficiently (TRAMS!!!)
    • Most dealers are really helpful so don't be afraid to try new table games
    • I can't drink like a 22 year old anymore
    • Don't gamble when you're SUPER hammered
    • Envelope system is the best way to stay organized and make sure you stick to your budget. We did everything in cash and I literally had envelopes for each day and separate envelopes for gambling money, vow renewal, tips, etc.

Thanks again for all the help VMBers...I will continue to lurk on this board because I have no idea when our next trip will be.
