Ok - we must be balance to The Force.... we know the overrated stuff, how about underrated?

I've learned this in the past 5 years or so.. sleep is underrated! yeah, I know, it's Vegas, can't waste time in bed but a good night's sleep get's me going for a full day..... when I tried to do too much with little sleep (and LOT'S of drinking) it usually cost me my last full day... now I pace myself with 6-8 hours sleep every night, drink moderately and I seem to be able to enjoy it more (probably a factor of hitting the other side of 50 recently)

The last thread mostly turned out to be a bitch session about what everyone doesn't like... this one has the chance to be more positive. I'm with ya on the other side of 50 and the importance of sleep to me. Without it, the following day is just wasted...

I think a lot of the service-employees are underrated. I often read here that service sucks and was so much better in the old days (when the mob ran Vegas) blah, blah, blah... but I honestly run into plenty of caring and friendly staff members at most places. I try to be very appreciative of their efforts both in my demeanor and in tips and it just gets the whole Vegas "vibe" going for me.

I would say it's under-rated to arrive in Vegas well rested. Nothing worse than being bushed right out the gate.

Drinking water while you're drinking is under-rated. Eating when drinking is under-rated.

Can you see a theme to when Vegas goes wrong for me?

As for sites, sounds and properties, I've always thought Monte Carlo was under-rated as a property. I've stayed there and the rooms are fine for quite a bit less than comparable rooms around that area. The casino is comfortable and the drink service has always been good.

I think the quality to price ratio of Vegas strip hotels.

Having stayed in all types of hotels across Canada and the U.S, you can't beat that value!!!

That is probably the most underrated thing about Vegas.

I would say the natural areas just outside vegas: Colorado river, Red Rock, grand canyon, valley of fire, etc.. These are some of the most scenic places in the country. I know the Strip and Downtown are the main draws to Vegas, but not enough attention is given to these other gems just short drives away

Agreed on the value point made by pressitagain. You can stay in a place for a couple hundred a night that would cost much more in another city. What would a place like Wynn go for per night in NYC or Chicago?

    100% agree with sleep.

Yeah our time is limited in LV, but I can't enjoy myself unless I am well rested.

Picking a great room no matter your budget and enjoying it is underrated. Take a few minutes to enjoy the scenery or relax in a comfy bed or chair. Take a few extra minutes in the shower if you get one with a good showerhead and good pressure. Getting off the strip for a couple hours is also underrated. I find I get burned out really fast if I don't.

There are few things better than a late night In-N-Out Burger run. Especially if you're near the south strip location.

    coffee shop.

Well, I never get coffee, but the 24 hour diner/coffee shop at 4 am in the morning is good eatin'. I'm partial to the chicken salad sandwhiches and pasta dishes at Bellagio and Mandalay Bay. I can never finish a chicken salad sandwich and the huge portion of fries that come with it, but it hits the spot.

The value of having a rental car at your disposal. They're cheap. Parking is free. Even if you don't use it every day, it's a drop in the vacation bucket.

But, Ken, this requires someone to be sober(ish), which tends to be a dealbreaker :drunk:

That is the built-in qualifier, of course. Though on days or those parts of days when folks aren't getting bent, it remains a great tool to have to have at their disposal. Like a hotel room, which as we know here seems to be a closet, relief station and temporary nap spot for many, or splurging on a meal that in a handful of hours is on its way to the treatment plant, full hourly value need not be drawn from a car for it to have value. Now if someone doesn't want to get out and about, in town or in the region, or can't drive, or is fine weaving together some convoluted path of bus transfer or waiting on a fixed-route shuttle going somewhere near the vicinity of something, the car is unnecessary. Different strokes. :peace:

What I've found to be under-rated are the various dining establishments that fly under the radar but just blow the heck out of the more prominent and oh-so-trendy absentee celebrity chef places in the newer casinos.

Places like Bootlegger and Chicago Joe for Italian. They never advertise, get good crowds by word of mouth.

Places like Golden Steer and Bob Taylor Ranch House for steak. You seldom hear them mentioned here at all but both are excellent.

Jerry's Nugget for prime rib! Some of the best prime rib I can remember. Puts Lawry's to shame, really!

Pamplemousse for Continental. Tres elegante`. I don't think I've EVER seen it mentioned here.

I know I will think of more just after I hit the post button. :)

Totally agree with Chicago Joe's and Bob Taylor's although Taylor's is a drive for most folks.

DMR I swear you must own stock in Jerry's for all the times you recommend their prime rib.:wink2: I still haven't been there, but with all your recommendations, it is on my list. I love prime rib.

I'm going to say getting a straight razor shave.

If you're a guy and haven't ever had one I highly recommend it. Most of the hotel spas seem to have it on their menus but I go to The Art of Shaving in Palazzo's Grand Canal Shoppes or down at Mandalay Bay.

    It's totally worth the $55.

I don't default to name/absentee automatically disqualifies a restaurant. I also don't default to the position that name means it is without question life-alteringly splendiferous. To me it's what is on the plate. And the value. Spago, for instance, might be "institutional" but it is Puck's inspiration, even all these years removed, whomever is the line chef and the sous chef, and I've never had a remotely bad plate in Vegas or Bev Hills. Rao's? That was crap. Big name though.

Bob Taylor's, Golden Steer, Marche, Todd's Unique, whatever, quite a lot of us, yourself included, have been spinning the virtues of the "local" dining scene for a very long time. However, most travelers do not venture far, geographically, and these places often take effort. And as we see here, they want the known and the comfortable and the usual, or they want to roll it on someone they saw on TV simply because they saw 'em on TV, neither of which is wrong.

So adding to the underrated: Get away from the Strip, downtown, buffets and Outback, the dining scene across the valley is diverse and fun and commendable.

The south end of the strip. There are great restaurants and excellent entertainment options. Plus, the traffic and chaos is not as bad.

The most underrated thing is drinking lots of water, no matter the time of year. Between the dry climate, smokiness of the casinos, and lots of alcohol, you really have a lot of replenishing to do.
