So instead of leaving on a friday afternoon i am very tempted to maximize my trip and book a 1am flight saturday morning. I am staying at the cosmopolitan and don't see it fit to pay for a friday night room there if i just need an additional 12 hours on vacay, since i will be leaving by 11pm anyway. I wouldn't mind staying at a more economically priced hotel just to crash for a few hours or to have my stuff available to me. Is it worth doing? I was thinking of a place like the flamingo or LINQ due to price. Anyone have redeye flight experience? Thanks.

If you are staying at the Cosmopolitan you can probably get a late check out until 1PM for no additional cost and probably to as late as 6pm for something around $50-60.

Otherwise its hard to say the value of getting a room: you could just check your bags somewhere and then go out and about all day long and then head to the airport at 10-11PM... if you get a room for the night, only to check out early, is there much value in taking the red eye instead of going home in the afternoon if you are mostly going to spend the time sleeping or resting in your room just so you can make it through the red eye flight.

Back in our younger days we always had red-eye flights coming home (midnight). We learned to get a room at the Gold Spike, it allowed us to get a mid-day nap and also a fresh shower. Then an evening on Fremont before heading to the airport.

There is something to be said about having a room before taking the red eye home, but only if it's the same hotel. Otherwise, you have to go thru the process of checking in at the new hotel and losing the time that it takes to do all that. I would look into what Auggie suggested with the check out of 5 or 6 at Cosmo to see how much they would want for that late of a check out.

I sometimes like taking a red eye flight out of Las Vegas. I always keep my room for the last day/night. I wouldn't bother changing hotels. Changing hotels would be too much trouble.......especially if you can't do an early check in (prior to 4pm.

I have done it both ways and I would wholeheartedly recommend having a room to use.

My girlfriend and I would usually take the red eye's home and the first time or two we didn't book the room for an extra day and we paid the price. It sucked. I distinctly remember sitting in The Mirage's sportsbook completely worn out at about 6pm one evening...I turned to her and told her the next time we did this we were booking the room an extra night.

From that point on if the flight is a red eye I will book the room for an extra day. It makes a huge difference.

I usually take the redeye back as well and agree it is definitely nice having a room. I generally ask for and get a 6pm checkout. Don't be jaded about how much fun you'll have that last day. It's not like a normal day where you can let loose and have fun. While you can go and do stuff you will also feel like you are just killing time waiting for your flight. So its nice to relax until pretty late and then enjoy the evening in the casino before you head out.

If you checkout at the normal time around noon there is a good chance you'll get tired and bored after a while since you don't really feel free like you would on a normal Vegas day. At least that has been my experience. Find out about the evening checkout though and not about getting a room at a different hotel, that seems like a bit much for what may just be a few hours of use.

We've done it both ways, and I definitely preferred having a room booked for the night we were leaving. No worries about luggage or having a place to hang out if we just want to chill before the flight.

We try to arrange things so that we are using a comp night for that night so it doesn't feel like a "waste".

You may have played enough to get the extra time comped. I used to try and "save" the money many years ago, by not paying for the last night but being overtired, I would often spend more. Therefore not saving any money in the long run and having to go to work the next morning exhausted.

To build on what Kickin said about the final day not really being an all-outer...that is true. We definitely slow rolled it but still checking out at 11-1pm and then having to be mobile for 10 hours sucked. What really bit me in the ass was that we went to work after landing on the red eye the first couple times so having that room the next time(s) helped us not be dead on arrival to the office.

i did that once with a 8pm flight and a 4pm checked out I wished I booked the room an extra night. as the 4 hours cost me thousands at the table.

NOW I book the night before so I can check in at 8am or 9am and I book an extra day even if I leave at 8pm or 11pm.

But I get comped rooms. Even if you have to move to another hotel I would but that is just me.

I'm going Late Wednesday like at midnight I told them I'm going to check in at 1am or 2am and checking out Saturday even though my flight is Friday night.

If you don't want to pay for a room then go to the Aria spa and purchase a day pass. Use the daypass in the afternoon until they close and then just gamble and eat until you leave to the airport.

Agreed, we have made it a habit of booking an extra day and just leaving when we are ready. It is a bit more expensive but so well worth it.

i definitly get a room for my red eye back to Boston. But I'm slow rollin it at the Gold Coast. Maybe an extra $30 bucks. The hassle of checking out to a new place is not worth it. Hopefully your play will get you some thing. Friday nights are tough. GL

This! I have done both. Having the room is better but I wouldn't move for it. The spa is a great option. Enjoy a steam/sauna, relax, have some snacks and be freshly showered heading home. We packed a backpack with a change of clothes for the flight too. Not carrying the backpack around is the benefit to having the room.

It doesn't even have to be a redeye for me to decide to extend my room an extra day. I will be flying into vegas for a one-nighter next month. My return flight is at 8:00pm. I made my reservation for 2 nights. I can gamble late on the one night I am there, sleep in late, hit the pool, gamble some more, take care of business, and then off to the airport.

A lot of great ideas. Thank you everyone. I'll let you know what I end up doing either in this thread or the trip report.

I have done the red eye several times with 3 & 4 pm checkouts. Having a rental car makes this work out better for me.

this is what I was about to respond with.

How much will NOT getting a room cost you?

Since you are talking about a Friday night though, that room is going to be expensive. It might be worth a move to somewhere cheaper than Cosmo - unless you have enough play there to get it comped.

I think it all depends on you and whether you are a day person or a night person. I'm a night person and I almost always take the redeye from Hawaii, both coming and going. The day I go home I usually sleep until almost noon (if I can get a late checkout I would sleep later also). I usually pack most of my stuff the night before so I only have my clothes for the day and toiletries to finish my packing. I do my normal things that day, leaving my bags with the bellman or in my rental car if I have one. I'm usually busy in the evening, either getting my last minute gambling fix, (hopefully) paying off my markers or taking a jaunt to my fave casinos or restaurants (In n Out on the way out, lol). For me it's no problem because I'm usually up and active in the evenings (of course if I lost a lot then I might just sightsee or limit my gambling).

I love the redeye because I can get my vegas fix and not have to worry about paying for a night before I leave. I also try to leave on a Saturday or Sunday morning (Hawaiian air flights to Honolulu leave around 1 or 2 am) so I can get home and sleep the day off but I have taken the redeye and gone to work after I got home (looong day though!).

As I mentioned, I think it all depends on you, if you are a day person and tend to run out of "gas" in the evening or later at night then maybe a pick me up nap or relaxing in your room might be best (paying for the extra "day" or getting it comped) before leaving but if you are usually active most of the night then you can just skip the room and just do your regular vegas things before going home and crash out on the plane (a few times I buckled in and was asleep before the plane took off, lol).

btw, during the cooler months I did crash out in my rental car in the early evening, this happened when once or twice when I was really tired (or lost a lot of money and was gambled out).

Up to you to decide which way you want to go. You may want to just book a room this time and see if it was worth the price (many here feel it is well worth it) and use it as a guide for future trips. If you feel you didn't needed the room then next time(s) don't get one, if you felt better then continue to get a room before taking the redeye. Me, I can't see spending money on a room that I will only be using for a few hours for but that's just me.
