I was wondering, say I got a handpay whilst in Vegas (wishful thinking I know :evillaugh). From what I understand UK citizens arn't liable to have tax's taken off the winnings.

However, what I want to know is what proof of your citizenship the person giving the handpay will need to see? Will it have to be a passport or will a UK driving licence do the trick (it is a provisional licence mind you)?

It's just that as we all know bringing a passport around with you everywhere you go isn't the safest or wisest idea (I don't wanna have to head to the British Embassy after losing it whilst drunk, haha). I have an old passport that I could bring around just in case lady luck is on my side!

I look forward to hearing thoughts of Brits and others with more knowledge than me, cheers!

When I won, many moons ago, my driving licence was enough.

As long as it's official and has your photo on it all should be fine.

Thanks for that info, do you think a provisional would also work?

I have seen people without photo ID win. If you have to......they will wait for you to run up to your room to get your passport.

I'd be careful using your provisional. Not to say it wont be accepted, but I imagine they are slightly less common, just something to be aware of if you get carded.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, they may think a 'provisional' means its not official or something! I'll dig out my old passport tbh, having that will mean no issues and I won't be afraid for it to go missing during a drunken session :drunk:

Even if your room happens to be at another property on the Strip? Or would they only wait if you won at your 'home' Casino?

Not all casinos will pay you and not deduct the tax. They need to have registered with some governing body (can't remember what) but you can be assured all the main Strip casinos will have done so. I didn't have a problem when it happened just the once. I always carry my passport but if you're worried about it take a colour copy and together with a driving licence you should be fine. Good luck. Hope it happens. I'm still waiting for it to happen again!

Actually, I would think that the casino would want to see a photo ID with your address. You could carry a british passport AND be a resident of the US..........in which case I believe they would tax you.

Cheers for that info. I hope so too, very wishful thinking though! Got to be in it to win it, right!

Interesting, my provisional driving licence has that on. I'll just make sure I'm carrying both my driving licence and my old passport.

Yep, you would think they would need that. I definitely only gave them my passport but they took it away for at least twenty minutes. I also had to fill in a form with details on it. Maybe they checked it against a database somehow or people with dual nationality could also get away with it. If it ever happens that I get a decent win again I'm going to ask the question. If only!

Check out the "Brit Tips" thread
I doubt they would accept and out of date pasport for the obvious reason, it's out of date and not valid :confused2:
I believe you can apply for you iTin number in advance though I dont know how it's done

I have a spare provisional. Lost one, got a new one, found it, upgraded one to full licence, kept the other...which I use for id. Never had a problem in Vegas. Denver on the other hand wouldn't take full or provisional. Had to run back to the hotel for my passport.

It's not actually out of date, it was a 'lost' passport that was typically re-found after I got a replacement. So it now functions as ID when I don't wish to risk taking out my actual passport. So it looks like a valid passport to anyone reviewing it.

Thanks for the heads up on that!

this may have changed but it used to be that non US nationals pay a 15 or 25 %? tax right at the cage
this was commonplace for Canadians visiting casinos in the US

I'm taking my cousin who has a DK Passport next week, so (hopefully) I'll find out firsthand

I've seen a 6 number fire bet pay (1000:1). ID was required by everyone who was on the bet. Americans weren't taxed unless their win was $10000. A Canadian was taxed 30% (taken right off their win at the table). A Brit was not taxed and the casino issued them an ITIN and gave them 100% of their win.

interesting I know the rule used to be anything 250:1 was issued a G-2 or CTR (or both) on the spot....but that was mostly for slots players
