Slots are almost always luck. Push the button/pull the handle and hope for thest.

Video poker requires a level of skill to play properly. (Luck is also a factor.) If you have no skill at VP, your expected results will be WORSE than slots. However, if you do have skill at VP, your expected results will almost always be BETTER than slots.

Some people choose to educate themselves on how to play VP properly. Some do not. It's really up to you.

One thing that's interesting to note...

    - By law, all slot machines in Nevada must pay at least 85% back over time to the player.
    - With video poker, however, the law states that paytables MUST be posted on the machine (or else within the software itself). Therefore, with proper strategy, it's possible to calculate what the payback is to the player over time.

Therefore, with something like "Triple 7 Cherry slots" you have no idea what your payback is (could be 85%, could be 90%, could be 92%...). But with something like "9/6 Jacks or Better video poker" the person who plays optimal strategy knows that he/she will get 99.54% over time.

    Some sites for further reading:

    - www.wizardofodds.com (good site for mathematical side of gaming)
    - www.vpfree2.com (good site for finding where the good video poker machines are)

My advice to you is to at least spend a few hours trying to learn your VP game of choice. Note that VP comes in all sorts of varieties (Jacks or Better, Deuces Wild, Bonus Poker, Double Bonus, etc.) and a good strategy that works on one variety isn't necessarily the best for another variety. You must study. There are excellent books out there. There are excellent articles on the web. Another good idea is to download the FREE trial version of Video Poker For Winners (Windows machines only) at www.videopokerforwinners.com and you'll get 10 free days trial. This is excellent software to train with. If you like it, you can always buy the full version when your 10 days runs out.

    Hope this helps.

It's not so much the best video poker but rather the type of game and payback schedule. Locals casinos offer better player advantage because they have to . Locals are more savvy that tourists. See vpFREE2.com.

As far as slots, downtown is better than the strip, but my preference is the Casinos along the Boulder Highway and into Henderson. You'll need a car or a bus pass, but it'll be worth it.

I try to stay away from slots, and stick to high pay Video Poker, Craps and Blackjack. I've found that works for me.

The El Cortez advertises the higher returns on slots, and has been audited by the Nevada Gaming Commission. So, go for it.

I'll dabble in slots from time to time, with the understanding that it's almost a guaranteed way to blast cash away fast. Hence my nickname for them, "slaughter machines".

As rasingoo said, if you're going to stick to machines, VP is your game. Start with learning the strategy for 9/6 Jacks or Better. My advice is, don't try to learn it all at once, but rather, learn it in increments. Your play will become much more instinctive that way. There are some great training apps available online that instruct you as you play.

It's all about finding the games with the best pay tables and learning how to play them correctly.

Good video poker is difficult to find on the strip, especially at the quarter level.

Downtown: Main Street Station, California, Four Queens, The D and El Cortez all have 100%+ and plenty of full pay.
Off Strip: The Palms, Sam's Town, the station casinos (Red Rock, Boulder Station etc.) and several more.

As others have said it really depends on the games you like and what paytables they have for them. If you don't know what game you like Stations casinos usually have high paybacks in their games. Boyd isn't quite as high overall but often gives good comps for play.

And fyi, raisingoo, the minimum slot payback is 75% in Nevada. Unlikely any are set that low though.

Anyone know if there's a good video poker practice game for Macs? I miss my Bob Dancer one from my Windows days.

Prepare yourself to go 'Through the looking glass'. You may never play a typical slot machine again (and you will long for downtown).

Go here and look over the page, http://www.videopokerballer.com/pay-tables/jacks-or-better/

Look in the second box and notice a Full house pays 9, and a Flush pays 6, hence 9/6 a full pay Jacks or Better machine (JOB 9/6) over the lllooonnnggg haul it will return 99.54%.
Next, scroll down the page and see how they change to Flush payout to 5, a 9/5 machine, and the payout drops to 98.45%.
They keep lowering the Full House and Flush payouts till your down to a 6/5 with a payout of 95%.
You can find 9/6 machines on the strip but they are often in the High Limit rooms at $2 machines. Keep in mind you need to play 5 coins for the best payout.
The pay table is displayed on the screen, you just need to know how to pull it up, it's not hard to do.

Sometimes they mess with the payout on other lines, be sure to check.
Downtown you can easily find 25 cent 9/6 Jacks or Better.

Learn how to play JoB first. It is a good beginners game and can be the foundation to learning many other VP games. Once you get comfortable playing JoB, you can easily move up to bonus poker. Not a lot of difference between the two and BP has better payouts. If you start out playing for money, maybe start at a lower denomination like .05 or .10 cents.
By the way, DDB is a very volatile game and you can loose a lot of money before you get a big payout. I would stay away from that one until you get some JoB experience under your belt. Good Luck!

Yes you can. Have you seen this strategy guide? http://wizardofodds.com/games/video-poker/strategy/double-double-bonus/9-6/
As others have mentioned it has a very high variance so you could have some wild swings in your bankroll.

Where do you plan to play?
I see you countdown shows you're within two months.
