1st timer ready for Vegas!!!

Hello All,

I am finally coming to Vegas!! I will be celebrating my 40th birthday in February and I look forward to doing all the wonderful things Vegas has to offer. I have been cruising this site for awhile and all the info is super!! I plan on seeing a show, drinking too much, gambling a little, eating some good food and relaxing. I will be counting down these months for sure!!!

Hi. I am new to this forum. I will be traveling solo to Vegas for the first time for a week in August. I have a few questions. I normally drink ice water with all of my meals. Is ice water typically free with a meal, or do you have to pay $4 for bottled water? I will be staying at the Monte Carlo. I have reserved a higher floor strip view room but am considering their offer to upgrade to a Monaco Suite for an extra $20 per night. I don't need the extra 1/2 bath, but am considering it for the mini fridge. Any thoughts?

I consider my gambling money as "vacation money". If I spend it all... I've had a nice vacation... if I come home with some or more than I left with that's as the Cajuns say " lagniappe ".

Research before you go... almost everything in Las Vegas in online... either at the hotel or restaurants' website or on Trip Advisor or Yelp with pictures. Research will not be wasted if you cannot use all you have learned on this trip... I'm sure you'll want to visit LV again sometime soon! You do not have to do all the things you learn about... but you have your choices so when you get there, you don't have to wander around wondering what to do. Make a bucket list and mark off the things you do... the rest will be still there next year.

One thing I learned the hard way is the envelope system... nothing worse than being in Las Vegas with no money to spend. I even mark one envelope for gambling at the airport... my very last chance for a win. Don't laugh... look online for the LV jackpots and the McCarren Airport is on the list a couple of times... might as well be you!

The advice about at least one special meal is very good. Usually if you live east of Las Vegas, you tend to eat earlier than Las Vegans... so you really don't need 3 big meals. A nice breakfast and at noontime a snack, shrimp cocktail, soup or half a sandwich will keep you from starving until your special dinner and you'll be able to enjoy it more fully... also tending to stay up late means you can treat yourself late in the evening to a dessert to take to the room to savor at your leisure.

Welcome Stephiede1975, This board is awesome. I wished I had found it years ago, but i am fairly new. Vegas is what you make of it! So with all this great advice, the do's and don'ts you will be well informed. Have a great trip and let Vegas do Vegas on ya!

Awesome!! Hope you have a great birthday in Vegas!! I'm in Va Bch, hoping this hurricane doesn't bring too much rain for us. I think my head is going to explode trying to read all this info, lol. But I'm too excited to stop. I know it will die down some. I have awhile before my trip.

 

Welcome gvlgal! Sonya hit it right on the head, you are never forced to drink those expensive bottles of water, but in the upscale places I would make sure to specify that you want tap water. If you can get a cheap upgrade like that then go for it. High Roller style!

 

Welcome from another Virginian (Harrisonburg). Don't run across many of us on the boards. My first trip was about 10 years ago, and have gone 4 or 5 times per year since. My advice is to not try and see everything in your trip. Leave yourself plenty of reasons to want to come back. For me, spend your money on food, shows, and gambling, not fancy hotel rooms. Or since it's a milestone birthday, maybe spend one night in the fancy hotel and the rest in some of the very reasonably-priced options off-Strip.

Have a great trip and Happy Birthday in advance. I'm getting ready to go out for my 55th birthday. Not really a milestone, except that some of the casinos offer extra geezer benefits once you hit 55.
