Went to a local res casino yesterday. The $3 table was full, so my buddy and I sat at a $5 BJ+ 3 card poker table. You know, the one with the side 3 card poker bet. Anyway, a guy is playing two spots, 3rd base and playing the 3 card poker spot as well. This particular casino pays 9:1 on all 3 card poker bets, regardless if a straight flush or a straight. He is playing $20 on top spot and $5 on the BJ spot. He had about $300 in green when we sat down, and was into his wallet within an hour. He only seemed to care about the 3 card poker bet. Shit you not, seen him do it several times and I really had to bite my tongue not to say anything- he was hitting his 14,15,16 against the dealers 4,5,6 up cards. He busted everytime, and the dealer needless to say would draw a 6 on their 14 and rake the rest of the tables bets. I figure he cost me about $100 doing that very thing. Never been so pissed playing BJ. My buddy said he cost him about $60 doing that same thing.

I find that at local casinos - the side bets are MUCH more important to (stupid) players than the actual blackjack.

You should have left the table if he was costing you that much money.

I'm sure people will respond that "Another player's poor decisions don't have any effect on you in the long run, because they are just as likely to save the table as hurt it with their poor play."

While that is true, it is so frustrating to sit at a table with an idiot like that.

Frustrating when it causes you to lose...

Best player ever if it works out in your favor.

Let the guy play with his money how he wants to...if you dont like it, leave the table.

I guess I am a little salty on this because last week I was at a local casino and this lady at the table would freak out when I would take the dealers bust card and she would lose (even if I was playing correctly)...but when I would save the table by taking a bust I got no words of thanks. Eventually I got so annoyed (She was doing other things to annoy me as well), I started playing wrong on purpose just to get a reaction. I hit a 12 against a dealer 6 causing the table to lose and the entire table started screaming at me...to continue my troll I told them all "thats what the book says to do", they all freaked out again, tried to explain blackjack too me, I continued to say they were wrong, they went as far as pulling out an iPad to show me the strategy table, I told them the strategy table was wrong. I eventually said, "How bout you let me play my cards the way I want to...its my money"

I went back to playing correctly, the original annoying lady busted out not too long later (after being way up at one point) and left...I proceeded to play for a few hours and walked away even...5 hours of entertainment for free.

So its frustrating to see people play wrong when it doesnt work out in your favor...but its their money and if they want to play wrong, they have every right too.

I am shocked, however, that they let him bet so much on the bonus with such a small BJ bet. my local only lets you bet up to half of your BJ bet on the bonuses

I have seen the same and much worse, the other day a guy on the table took a hit on 19! (lost of course). I am more relaxed with bad players, as people can help as well as hinder you, but if they get to me I walk without saying or doing anything. In most cases they lose their cash before I leave. As as if the game wasn't hard enough with giving extra advantage to the casino.

Other examples I see here in the UK are people splitting any pair against any dealer upward, it has to be seen to be believed. Also people don't bet their double downs, if you don't bet those I feel you are throwing away money.

I was playing at a table once & if the guy had over a (hard) 12 he never hit. Didn't matter the dealer upcard.

I saw a guy do a paid double on a hard 14 against a dealer 6 at the Free Bet table last trip in April. The dealer tried his best to talk him out of it.

He hit a 5 and the dealer ended up with 18.

After that he just did whatever he wanted until he lost all his money. Dealer told me after that was the worst blackjack player he'd seen all week.

    Maybe its your same guy!

    +1. Ditto.

While most seasoned BJ players will agree that it all comes out in the wash in the long run it is absolutely gut wrenching to see this play out in real time.

I agree that it can be frustrating playing at a table where someone is just completely oblivious to basic strategy. I won't usually stay long unless i'm winning of course.:D

I am guessing because they are a flat 9 to 1, even on straight flushes they figure they come out ahead. Either that or they get plenty of people like him in there and they breeze thru several hundred and always leave broke.

This is one of those thread titles where it's fun to replace Blackjack with the *other* definition of BJ.

"Never bust" and "Mimic The Dealer" are two very common bad strategies.

I just remembered a session from my last trip.

Bellagio - busy night. $10 CSM table. Full table. I keep hovering around my $100 buy-in. Up a little, down a little, back and forth.

Everyone is playing reasonably well basic strategy-wise. I am at third base. A spot two seats down from me opens up. There is a big group of foreigners huddled around the table (maybe from India or thereabouts? That's the vibe I got from them). One of them sits down at the newly opened spot.

He is AWFUL. Making terrible decisions. Hitting the wrong stuff, standing when he shouldn't. I'm going crazy cause that really bugs me.

    And yet - I'm winning.

I can't lose a hand. The woman next to me whispers to me: "This guy doesn't have a f*##ing clue... but it's working!"

In my head I tell myself - "Ok - you can keep playing, but don't lose any money cause of this guy - once you get back down to your break even point - leave."

    And yet - now I'm up $50. Up $100.

And I definitely wouldn't have been had he played correctly. He saved me a few times with his crappy play.

It all does even out in the end. But - had his bad play screwed me - I'd have been gone in a flash.

Many years ago, at a wonderful $10 2-deck, S17, DAS blackjack table at the Stardust (RIP), there was a guy at 3rd, betting cash... $200 to $1000 a hand...every hand. He was practically playing ANTI-basic strategy.
    15 vs dealer 4? He'd hit. 15 vs dealer 8? He'd stand. A-6 vs. 6? Stand. A-2 vs 10? He'd double.
It was absloutely bizarre - and he was gettin' killed.
But here's the weird thing - me and my $10 to $30 bets just could not lose! I was getting good cards, but even when I was dealt crap, I pulling miracle hits - 5s to my 16s, that sort of thing.
After about 10 minutes of this, the guy gets pissed-off...no, not at the casino or the dealer - at me!!
He makes a comment about how I'm taking all of the "good" cards from him.
    My response?
"Look buddy - if you're gonna keep playing the way you are, maybe you should back your bets down $10"
He was gone about 3 hands later.
Dealer then tells me, "I am so glad YOU said that, because we're not allowed to. He must have blown through 10 grand - and he lost half of that before you even got here."

If he wasn't the worst blackjack player I've ever seen, he's got to at least be in the top-5.
But hey - his "wrong" play did nothing but help me at that table, in that session.
So - as mentioned upthread - it will always work itself out in the long run - bad play (eventually) helps you as much as it hurts you.

How is my epic drunken session at the $1 tables at Sahara not in this thread? Like the time I got pissed off at the dealer for asking me 3 times if I was sure I wanted to stand. I had a 20... or.. maybe it was a 12, but rum prevents me from being able to add numbers if I have to take off my shoes and use my toes to count. :wink2:

I have a co-worker who lived in Vegas for quite some time, and once told me that some of the casinos employ hired "ringers" whose sole job is to stir up the tables with crappy play.

A buddy of mine and myself consider ourselves to be above-average APs and we happened into a nice stretch at NYNY one night. We were making a killing and some shady character came in and sat RIGHT between us mid-shoe without a word. He killed the run with some low percentage moves so we took the hint and coloured up. I ended up seeing him at another table later that week and asked him point blank if the casino goons sent him in to cool us down and he wouldn't confirm nor deny, but his wry smile gave him away.

Anyway, this thread reminds me of probably my favourite youtube video of all time:

If you're an above-average AP, then you understand that other players have zero impact on the outcome of the game. The only negative effect they have is if they come in during a good count (assuming you're that kind of AP) and eat up high cards. Which seems to happen to me at every table. But it still would've made sense for you to keep playing until the count comes down or the shoe is finished..

I totally agree with you. I think what it was more than anything was me having seen too many movies. I kind of got spooked and wanted to leave with my $300 instead of some broken bones! Silly, I know, but in the moment all I could think of was getting the hammer in the back room.
