Do you think these large resorts have outgrown themselves and that is why these boutique hotels are opening up? I kind of like the more "old school" places anyway, much better service and I am leary of staying at ARIA now with the bad reviews I have been seeing. Too big to provide a good customer service. Just like the big banks, which is why they are dissapearing. I would like to try The Cromwell or SLS when it opens....

Yes, in a sense, I think you are right. The smaller hotels (I would add Downtown Grand to the list) seem to have better customer service. My host at the Downtown Grand last weekend saw me standing in line to check in and he went back to the office and checked me in so that I did not have to wait in line. I really appreciate that. Also, I find very good drink service at the Cromwell and Downtown Grand. Granted, they are a different experience entirely. The pools are not as enormous and they do not have the selection of restaurants, but you can just walk across the street or so forth to find those things.

With 1,600 rooms I would not call the SLS a boutique hotel.

While the room inventory, does not fall into a boutique hotel category, but the operator has experience running smaller properties that cater to the boutique experience.
The assumption is they will carry over this level of personalized service, atmosphere, and styling to a larger volume property.

The question is will they be able to execute on that plan efficiently. I like the boutique offering that companies like Kimpton Hotels offers, however
I am a frugal guy who cringes at even paying over $160 a night for Wynncore. I am looking forward to visiting SLS when it opens, and booked a room there on a weeknight for the bargain prices of $106
during their opening week. I move down to Caesars for the remainder of my trip on thursday. I think at the right price this place could make a go at it, and having the monorail
helps make the property not feel so isolated from the rest of the strip.

They will have to impress me though, to consider a return, but I am anxiously awaiting to see if there update is as nice as it seems online.

Definitely agree, some of the trip reports from Aria have been horrifying! I'm staying at The Cromwell in a couple weeks and am hopeful it will be a good experience. To me good customer service is finding a way to say yes to your customer when they have a request. The huge places, particularly those run by large corporations, miss this fact. I've been really impressed by the 2 properties owned by Derek Stevens downtown, they are very customer service oriented.

Also a bit weary of staying at the Aria.

I have 3 nights courtesy of MYVEGAS coming up in August, I think i'll bypass the bell desk and handle my bags myself. Will definitely not be doing self check-out considering all te over chargers people have been coping.

Will report back on my experience

I too am welcoming these properties. I guess I'm interested to see how the SLS experience translates to a much larger hotel. I have stayed at the SLS in LA a few times and have dined on site. I would call it a unique hotel but not exactly a Boutique hotel as I think it still have 300 rooms. The unique experiences are what makes a lot of us flock to Vegas (gambling, shows, dining, over the top clubs all count as unique in my book) and I'm happy to see hotels with more personality starting to make a comeback. They might not be the themed palaces of the 1990's and early 2000's but they are much more unique than the properties from mid 2000's to present.

I'm pretty sure Genting doesn't agree with the OP. They're betting on the 3500 room Resorts World across from SLS to be pretty successful.

It's a bit of a stretch saying that Resorts World is across the street from SLS, considering its south of Circus Circus and Riveria. In the neighborhood yes. Now the Rock in Rio site could help boost
SLS during event periods. I believe Resorts World to compete head on with WynnCore, bringing back a themed resort to me, is injecting something unique, and if they cater to the Asian market Steve W could have a problem.

Personally I think the whole SLS, Cosmo, Aria, Fontainebleau Casino styling is played out in Vegas. Resorts World in a unique offering in the bleak North Strip, Where me SLS seems to be a competitor to the Palms, Cromwell, or Hard Rock, given their target demographic. Just cause they are technically on the strip, its tough to say they are competing against properties much further south.

They will need appeal to broader market of locals and business travelers to service there debt however, during off weekends when the CA crowd is not filling up hotel rooms.

i honestly dont see the sls getting locals knowing sam and the type of places hes putting in there its to high end for locals, and i agree its on the strip but is it really, its so fare down, its a 20$ cab ride and on a weekend you can wait an hour or 2 after the club lets outs to get a cab out off there.

look the linq is having problems and they now have locals tusdays set up with big discounts for all theres stuff there to drive traffic.

and i know people wont agree but i dont need another players club and free food, dam im spread all over this town.

i belive wynn will get hurt the most with Resorts World

I think the locals will gravitate to cheap drinks and good odds. Although.they probably like to gamble close to home. I personally think LAS is over developing too much retail. It will be like the outlet mall bust 15 years ago. They are building for visitors spend that has yet to materialize.

Big banks are disappearing? I would have never guessed by all the banks I see around town!! smh

I actually disagree with the actual sentiment of the OP anyway... Cromwell is small because that's the building they used. It was already small. It's a boutique because it's small, they didn't just decide to have boutique hotel and build it that way. It's barely boutique anyway, that place is going to be a party hotel, just a small one. Just wait until Drais reopens in the basement. And don't forget, it went through a couple hands before landing on the Cromwell... that was simply an opportunity that that management company decided to go for.

i agaree and they wont have cheap anything , thats not sams style so they will have a locals problem not no mention the pain in the ass of getting a cab and the cost . dam if im spending 20$ each way to get the sls if i can walk to the cosmo, they better be comping locals at all there clubs and make the extra effort worth while to schlep down there.

gaming wont matter as much as theres some many options and so many nite club options to thats its becoming over saturated especiacly on weekdays now.they realy have to make it worth ur while to get down there, its far,

Artisan was one of the first Boutique hotels now you have Rumor, Alexis Park and now Cromwell they are just going after different crowds than MGM. SBE and Drais are both known for restaurants and nightclubs and that is the focus. Bring nightclubs, dayclubs, lounges restaurants and have hotel rooms is a huge thing for them to have all inclusive packages.

I have lived in Vegas for nearly 20 years, and i dont go to the strip to gamble. Local bars have way better odds, as well as Red Rock Casino , suncoast or Sante fe.

I think they are simply dealing the cards dealt.
If they had more space they probably would have built it bigger.
