What are the odds?

I might not have the best luck at the casino, last 3 trips have been losers, but I have the habit of running into people all over the world. Examples include:

1. Running into my freshman college roommate at an anti-money laundering conference in Chicago. He was working for the FBI and I was at the DOJ at the time.

2. Running into a classmate from law school in Scranton at a restaurant after going to a wedding Syracuse and driving back to DC.

3. Getting in line at the Lufthansa check-in in Prague and my next neighbor is right in front of me.

4. Leaving Le Cirque at the Bellagio and running into a friend from my high school baseball team.

5. Today, I went for a run down at the mall in DC and ran into one of my college girlfriends.

What are the odds? Does this happen to anyone else?

 

I never run into friends in Vegas, but my daughter and I did once get selected to play the vacation family at Sea World dolphin show whose wife falls into the water while feeding the dolphins. The 'wife' was actually one of the gals in the show.

Anyway, my real wife was in the audience and we talked how we regretted not bring the camcorder to record this. When I got home I found a coworker of mine was also in the audience and had recorded it for us.

The only other interesting bump into I had was a few years ago while staying at the Monte Carlo and riding in the elevator and in stepped Larry Miller



I said, hey, you're the doorman from Seinfeld and he said yeah and chuckled with that same look above, and pointed to the poster hanging in the elevator advertising his comedy act at the MC. Of course I felt like a buffoon for not realizing he was doing a gig there, but he was beyond cool about it.

He hung around and we kept talking for about 10 minutes after we got out of the elevator, talking about a good friend of his with cancer. Unfortunately I was in a little bit of a hurry to meet up with my wife and daughter, but it was obvious Larry had nothing to do and was hinting at hanging out and having some drinks, but I had to rush off. Wish I had just called the wife and told her what was going on and I'd be late or just invited him along.

 

I ran into a friend from high school on Main Street, Disneyland, USA.

 

When I was younger I recall going into a strip club in another state and seeing my neighbor, it was a little awkward!

 

This didn't happen to me, but I was talking to my parents yesterday who are out of town and they ran into their next door neighbor at the same restaurant they were having lunch at.

 

On my second trip I was at Philadelphia airport and heard someone shouting my first name, I took no notice as I knew it wasn't me but after the third shout I looked round and saw a woman who used to go drinking in my local pub.

 

Did she make her tassles spin clockwise or counterclockwise? Or both?!

 

About 3 years after I took his class, I ran into my 11th grade English teacher at a hotel. I worked the 11p-7a weekend shift as night auditor and he checked in under a different name and paid cash. If he recognized me, he didn't let on, but he was acting nervous.

On the first day of our honeymoon in Bermuda at The Elbow Beach hotel we went for lunch and ran into a neighbor from a condo investment property I owned.

But the topper is when I ran into a guy at a local TFIFridays I met a week earlier at some multi level marketing meeting. He was trying to get me on board and was demonstrating a bunch of crap and wanted me to be in his pyramid scheme. I didn't notice that he and his wife were siting at a table nearby, but I was explaining to my date about how I got roped into this multi level marketing meeting and what a pile of junk he wanted me to sell and how corny his demonstrations were. This guy heard the whole thing and knew what I thought of his scheme and said hello just as I finished. I was embarrassed for a bit, but never heard back from him again.

 

Stopped at a bar at GN to meet up with my dad after a poker session, he was chatting it up with some youger folks who happened to live where I used to out in Seattle (we are from the east coast), I mentioned that I was a PA at a hospital out there, the young lady says she has a friend who used to work at the same hospital, who is in training at a PA school in Connecticut...and at the time was rotating at the hospital I work at in Connecticut!

On another trip, as we were flying home, I came to the aid of a passenger sitting next to me who had a seizure and possible stroke. After all had cleared while we were making the connection in Cleveland back to Hartford, another passenger approached me to say how he was impressed with my response to the other traveller. He said he could never do that, and thats why he became a teacher.

I said, "oh, my dad is a teacher, what do you teach?"

"he said "math"...

"my dad is a math teacher!" I responded. "where do you teach?"

he said "outside Springfield, MA"

"My dad teaches in Springfield..where are you exactly??"

"East Longmeadow.."

I looked at him, then finally realized I was talking to MY high school Calculus teacher!!! He remembered me, as it was his first year teaching Calculus...We chatted for over an hour while waiting for the connection, catching up!!!

what are the odds??

 

I avoid anybody that might know me. Too many skeletons in the closet. This does not happen to me.

I rarely run into anyone I know anywhere. My small group of high school friends I know where they are and they know where I am. Outside of the three people from high school that I communicate with, if anyone else saw me or I saw them there would be zero communication because we would not know each other.

Same for my small group of college friends. We pretty much know where each of us are and where we are going. College, I have a better chance of running into people as I was a little more famous/notorious in college.

I much prefer anonymity.

My wife on the other hand, she runs into people she knows/knew/saw one time just about anywhere in the world that we are at.

 

Last year I won't mention casino in Vegas but a next door neighbor was a detective for county police. He put a lot of guys away anyways he moved out on night in middle of night and no one knew where he went well low in behold I was walkin through casino and guy taps me on shoulder and says hey ole neighbor

Long story short he moved as people he put to prison we're getting out and he had to move for safety sake. He is now head of security and a casino

 

In the crowd, or on the stage?

 

You should have asked him, I bet he knew!

 

In the crowd, a neighbor girl would have been better obviously.

 

last July my GF and I are riding the DTX? back from downtown and she starts drunkenly chatting with the couple behind us.

It turns out he was a distant cousin of hers, the more coincidental it got the more his wife and I were getting creeped out.

So we all got off at Fashion Show and my GF asks where are you staying?

His wife and I do the look.

He says TI.

His wife and I in unison yell "no room numbers"

He said it and it was 2 doors down.

Creepy as all hell.
