coin star - I am cheap

getting ready for my may 10th vegas trip. save coins inbetween each trip. I cash out the coins at my local Von's store at the coin starr machine on the day I leave, it charges 10% and I usually have 200$ or more in coins so that is 20 bucks. could I take the coins to the cashier at the casino and have them count it and pay me with no fee?? I would promise gamble it at their casino.
one more question - do I have a gambling problem cause I save pennies for years to spend in vegas in 10 or 20 minutes, I feel a little quilty cause my grandkids shake my piggy bank (that says vegas here I come and a picture of a slot machine on it - which they gave me) and ask if they can have the coins inside - NO I say, save your own pennies!!!

 

It would be worth $20 to me not to lug those heavy coins around on my vacation.

 

Roll them and take them to your bank. They can either change them or deposit them.

 

Ya that's a bit crazy to travel with all that change to save $20 bucks.

 

Amen to that! Also agree with above, just take them to your bank... roll them though... don't go in with a big bowl of coins. I'm not even sure casino cages still have those machines... if they do, they'd be quarter and nickels, not dimes and pennies.

This post brings back some fond memories... my Grandpa used to give me a peanut-butter sized jar of pennies every so often and the coin wrappers to go with it. This is in the mid 60's and I dunno, I'd get $7 or $8 or so and man did that make a 6 year-old kid feel rich!!!

 

Call your bank first. At my bank they wanted it not rolled. My bank (in Texas) doesn't charge if you deposit it in your account.

Coinstar only charges the commission if you exchange your coins for cash. You must agree to the fee at the beginning of the transaction. Another option is that they will offer to exchange your coins for an amazon gift card free of charge. This is done by the coinstar machine communicating with the amazon server via modem.

Coinstar machines are fairly antiquated in that they will communicate via modem with a telephone jack or wireless connection to a network. The network connection box is usually located in the upper left hand on the rear of the machine.

Let's say one started to load coin and the machine somehow became 'disconnected' from the server (the phone cable manages to become dislodged from the jack). Since the individual didn't agree to the terms of the fee, the machine has no other option but to pay out the cash commission free as there is no longer a connection with the amazon server.

Maybe you'd be lucky enough for the CoinStar machine to lose connection from the server

 

At some of our local casinos, they are charging similar fees as Coinstar for cashing in change. I'm sure you can get it done in Vegas but they probably don't want the bother. I would check with your bank. Mine still does it free. Otherwise, Coinstar's fee isn't all that unreasonable.

 

Paying the fee for CoinStar isn't being cheap, its being wasteful. Its like cashing your paycheck at a check-cashing place when you have a bank account, its a fee for the desperate. You can choose from dozens of gift cards which you'll get at full value including things like Amazon, Southwest Airlines, Home Depot, and a bunch of others. Odds are you buy things from one of those anyway.

But have you even asked your bank? A lot of banks have their own coin machines that are free to use for account holders. If your bank doesn't have one and they won't accept loose coins, I wouldn't want to roll them either. So let your grandkids do it and tell them its a game.

 

my buddy's advice

just menetion this to my buddy while setting up a tee time for our group on thur. Said he use to stop at the GOLD Strike on his way in to vegas. You can still put coins in the machine and be paid by coins and take your cup full of coins (any demontion) and they will cash out. Great I said -no not so great he said - while he was cashing out the coins his wife would drop 20-50$ and then tell him to gas up their and the gas was about 15 cents a gal more then in vegas so it was cheaper to pay conistar. Also he said the next time his wife said how much did you get, give it to me. After that he gave it to grandkids

 

Funny, many of the banks here charge you to count and roll coins. My bank doesn't charge but will NOT take rolled coins.......too many problems with rolls short a coin or two or with slugs. They take loose change with a deposit ticket, count it and credit it to your account.

That's exactly what I was going to suggest. We have accounts at two different banks here at home, and both of them have free coin machines for account holders. Otherwise, you should be able to take your coins inside the bank, and have them count them in THEIR machine, behind the counter, and just make it a free deposit directly into your account.

 

Up until about a month ago my closest branch had a coin counting machine. I went back in Feb before I went to LV and I guess it's used so little a manager had to come turn it on. A few weeks ago I go in and the machine is now gone. I was hoping to cash in some coins for tip money.

 

I bring my coin jar in to the bank before every trip!

Most banks now have a coin machine, and will do a coin deposit into your account of unwrapped coins with no surcharge.

 

I hate having change in my pockets. I hate the weight, the jingle and also because I think they are filthy. I had this conversation with a family member yesterday.
I have to replace my debit/atm card so while I'm waiting for a new one I've been dipping into my change. Yeah I have a mop bucket almost full and right now it has
at least $600 in change in it. I hate rolling coins and would rather pay the fee at the grocery store.
The closest Casino is about 90 miles from here. Yesterday I grabbed a fist full of coins and picked out $7 in Quarters - SCORE! I didn't have to go hungry haha!
I heard that Casinos will take your change for free but they do not like a certain coin but I can't remember if it's pennies, dimes or nickles.

 

Usually, it's the dimes they won't take.

 

The kiddos really ask for your loose change and you say "NO," quite emphatically?

I have a change jar and right before I go to Vegas, I take it to my bank and they have the change machines there. I deposit the cash to my bank account. I will be doing this tomorrow actually.
