Just got back from 6 nights at Palazzo and my 7th trip there over the last 5 years. I'm wondering if the property isn't starting to show age (yes, I know it is relatively new outside of Vegas, but in Vegas terms, it is getting old :)

It was a big smokier than I remember, like maybe they have changed the ventilation system or turned part of it off.

Took 30 minutes after arriving at my room for my luggage to be sent up, something I don't usually do, but thought it might be easier since I had more than a rollaboard this time.

Dry-cleaning pick up took a very long time as well.

Still a nice room and a nice property, but this year it just felt like fewer staff and minor cost cutting measures all around.

I think the days of the "one-upmanship" of the bigger, better billion-dollar box that the gaming/entertainment package comes wrapped-in are definitely over. I'm no fan of Sheldon Adleson, but he's a sharp operator and you can bet the business model is being continually fine-tuned to balance service and profit. A lot of folks on the board are convinced service is dead in Vegas, as are quality gaming propositions. I disagree, but do believe Vegas is in the process of changing, yet again, to react to the reality that visitor numbers are back to pre-recession levels, but average spend per person is significantly down from those days. In order to stay profitable... something has to give.

just curious how smoke and slow dry cleaning/bell service equals a hotel showing it's age.

    um ok

    I'd have to respectfully disagree.

Both properties are holding up beautifully & I haven't noticed any difference in the great service from top to bottom.

OTOH, we've stayed at V/P maybe 8 times in the last couple of years and have encountered none of your problems. Service has always been superb and prompt, and the rooms immaculate.

I think you've got it right. It's a very nice hotel and the rooms are large. Of the places I've stayed (IP, NYNY, Mandalay Bay, Palazzo) it's still my favorite but with the changes on the strip over the last couple of years (Aria, Cosmo, Wynncore, Quad, Cromwell, etc.) for the first time in years I'm thinking I would try a different hotel next time.

The rooms at the Wynn were renovated after only year 5. I figure Adelson considers Wynn his biggest rival and would want to match him at least.

When Adelson built V/P he made a decision not to match Wynn in service and luxury. It shows.

Maybe he is aiming for Wynn-lite?

Interestingly I get room offers from Wynn all the time even though I've only ever done light gambling there whereas I've never gotten anything from v/p even though I spend a couple thousand dollars there every year between hotel, food, gambling.

The opposite is for me. I only receive reduced rooms at Wynn even playing a decent amount (good thing my host takes care of me). However, V/P have been sending me offers like crazy for the last few weeks even though I've done very lite gambling there.

It's funny how casinos give offers to lite players and not heavy players.

Heavier players are more likely to come back with less offered to them on a relative basis.

The Venetian was opened on May 3, 1999,Wynn did not even own the land till April 27, 2000.

I guess your saying that the Venetian did not beat out the Bellagio or The Mirage when it was brand new, for service and luxury... I feel it did at the time..

Venetian is a luxury hotel for people who don't know what real luxury is. Thats the difference between Venetian and the Wynn.

I did notice the smoke in Venetian... maybe just a lot of people were smoking... there is always a lot of people in there. The ceilings aren't that high in their casino either.

It didn't seem aged to me. I thought it looked good! No, it's not Wynn, but Wynn looks like no other property... V/P is different... still if you look around that place, just the little details, it's really fancy, especially for being so huge.

They did have that huge cyber attack a few months ago.. now of course we don't know what is going on behind the scenes, but I'm guessing that had a rather large impact on them. They still don't even have a proper website, just a back up one.

I wholeheartedly agree with Bomman. It's not real luxury because a tremendous amount of the materials used are fake.

As an example, Wynn uses exclusively real stone and marble, while V/P uses much cheaper, faux materials throughout much of the property. I know this not because I'm a luxury connoisseur, but because I worked my early years in construction and now I work to protect it. There's a huge difference between the properties, and because V/P went the cheap route Adelson's place simply falls into disrepair a lot easier and quicker.

I remember reading a lot about this back in the day when Venetian was more popular. And it was not just construction material that was cheap but furniture and amenities as well.

I never stayed there so can't confirm, but I remember a lot of trustworthy people saying things like the furniture looked nice, but when they got closer to it and picked it up it was cheap and light. To me that's always painted my view of V/P as just being a cheap place under the surface (not to mention I loathe Adelson).
