You are dealt a 9-K straight flush
    What do you do?

I would keep it. What is the phrase "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth". I'm not 100% sure what that means but that is my 2 cents.

More of a "Bird in the hand" situation. Keep it.

Funny, I had bird in the in hand in the original poll and changed it because I thought some people wouldn't get it.

Tossing the 9 would be one of the most negative EV plays every made. You're guaranteed 250 coins; tossing the 9 you expect to win 92.3... Not good.

    You get 1 royal, 7 flushes, 6 straights, 9 Jacks+, and 24 nothings.

I'll ditch a made flush for 4 to a Royal but not a made straight flush.

You have to keep the straight flush, 47 to 1 for the royal is just too hard for the 16 to 1 payout(4000 vs 250).

Whilst it might pay off once in a while over the long term it is a bad move to ditch the 9 - take the payout and use those funds to keep looking for the Royal.

I might toss the 9 if I were playing a VP tournament, but never in regular play.

Never had this happen to me yet, but if it did I'd assume is act like I tend to when I get a wild royal flush with just one deuce. Stare at it for awhile and hold all 5 cards.

This was asked awhile ago on videopoker.com about half the people wrote they would go for it. :nono:

I was dealt a 9-k SF in Super Triple Play, 3-play at $5. Needless to say, I kept the $10,500.

When the SF pays 700, you definitely don't want to throw it away.

Fwiw, a 4 to a royal is worth about 95 credits or so on average for a 5 credit bet.

I would have to keep the winner instead of chasing the bigger win.

Why do you play Vp? I play for the royal.,......yes it is 250 but the royal....closest I came was tossing a flush and getting the fill......to each their own....

Tossing a flush (or a straight) is different though, that's only worth 20-35 credits. I've broken close to a dozen flushes in my life. Several straights too. No conversions though...meh.

I think anyone considering taking a 46:1 chance on converting 250 credits to 4000 credits needs to seriously review their math and/or gambling understanding.

BTW I'm offering even money for anyone trying to roll a 7 with 2 dice if anyone wants a bet. We all know the 7 comes up all the time so it's a decent bet. :peace:

I'd always go for the sure thing. Sure you could get lucky and hit it, but how much have you passed up waiting for that 1 big hand?

The expected value of holding a straight flush is 250, since that is the typical payout for a SF. The expected value of going for the royal flush for 4000 coins when holding 4 to a royal is 93. It is not even CLOSE.

On average, you are throwing away more than half your SF payout by going for the royal.

Let me put it in less technical terms. If every time I was dealt this hand and I said to you, if you pay me 250, you can play the hand how you want and keep the wins, over time, I would end up with more than twice the money than you had.

Or yet another way. The cost of this error (a more than 60% cost in expected value) is around the same in severity as if every time you were dealt two pair, you held only one pair in Jacks or better!!!

To put that into craps terms, it would be 'smarter' to parlay a winning $10 'box-cars' bet. (46-to-1 versus 36-to-1; 250 to win 4000 versus 300 to win 9000!)
