I just read over on the L.V.A. site that the El Cortez shut their poker "room". I'm sure it wasn't a huge money-maker for them, but it's pretty sad to see the poker dying out downtown. Just the Nugget and Binion's left for live poker, or those electronic games at the Plaza.
I was also sad to see it go. My conspiracy theory is that they only continued to maintain that room in order to accommodate Jackie, and he is now unwilling (or unable, or a combination thereof) to play anymore.
I actually got to play with him in October, which was a honor. He didn't say a word, but raked several pots.
Now we know for sure why the Poker room was closed a few months ago. Jackie just passed away.... http://www.fox5vegas.com/story/24954424/las-vegas-casino-owner-jackie-gaughan-dies
I also had the honor of playing with Jackie in October. He wasn't in very good shape physically, but still pretty sharp with the cards. Highlight of my entire trip was splitting a monster $18 pot with him....
I'll be spending the first night of my trip at El Cortez this year, so it's a shame the poker room is no more. I've been advised that it's a good idea to spend the evening at the Parlour Bar, drinking cocktails with Scottie
