the wifey and i love the vegas...duh...we have always stayed on the strip due to the multitude of things to see and do...we love walking the strip with brew and just soaking everything in. every trip, we will go downtown for a while, but only hang for a few hours due to us not having much to do other than gamble. the wifey gambles, but i just drink. she isn't an all day gambler either, so we get bored with the downtown area.

are you downtown fans all day gamblers or is there something else that keeps you entertained for days at a time?

    thanks :beer::beer::beer:

When I'm in Las Vegas by myself, I'm pretty much the "all day gambler." When I'm there with my wife, I'm more of the "drive her to shopping and gamble then" type of gambler - until she's in bed and them I'm a "all night gambler."

I'm also more of a casino-hopper than a "stay and play" type player. Plus, I'm a cheapskate low-roller, and playing for comps just isn't what I'm about, so if things aren't going my way, I'm outa there.

So for me, the appeal of downtown is that the limits are lower when I do gamble and the casinos are so much closer to each other that it's quick and easy to move on the next place if things aren't going my way.

Downtown, you're just a minute or two from the joint next door or across the street. Not so on the Strip. You're a major trek to the door of the casino you're in and at least a five minute walk from the next place. Then rinse and repeat.

Ditto for getting from your room to the street. The hotels on the Strip are so large that you've walked a half mile before you've even reached the front door! (If you're in the north tower of the Four Queens, you are literally less than a dozen steps from the elevator to Fremont Street - and I have short legs!)

So, for getting more time at the tables, conserving your energy, and getting the most out of your limited vacation time, Downtown wins hands down, IMHO.

All day gambling for both of us. A break to hit Fremont and maybe catch a band and people watch, but besides food, it's an all day gambling affair for us.
    Mob Museum
    Neon Boneyard
    Container Park
    Area 51 baseball game
All are downtown diversions from gambling.

The Neon Museum and Mob Museum are two ways to spend a lot of non-gambling time downtown. I also enjoy just wandering through the casinos, popping in for a drink whenever I get a little thirsty and checking out the people. The same goes for Fremont East. There is plenty to wander through and see without gambling. And before you know it, the sun is setting and the canopy lights up.

I stayed downtown for three nights last summer. One day I pulled out my LVA coupon book, and starting at the Plaza and I used all the free play/bet matching coupons for downtown. I finished that journey with an extra $35 in my pocket, and intended to use it for a straight razor shave at El Cortez...but I didn't realize the barber shop was closed on Sunday. ;)

Mob Museum is a great way to pass 3hrs. Being form Wisconsin we found it very interesting. Lots of mob ties to the northwoods which is are other get away destination. Have to visit El Cortez and Gold Spike if it is still there. Yes, there are some nice balconies to DRINK and people watch. It can be fun to pick out a vendor and watch them try to sell there stuff. OMG I can't wait to get there!!

I'm an "all day gambler", so downtown works perfectly for me.
Usually start around 7AM and go until midnight or so...with only meals and bathroom breaks between sessions (plus the short walking time between casinos).

there are some things to do downtown, but it just seems that gambling is the main thing...that's not bad, just not totally for us. people watching is certainly a good time downtown!:beer::beer:

While things like mob and neon museum are things to do, I just can't do them every trip. I'm not really sure when I'll ever get back to the mob museum.

The one thing not mentioned so far is the live outdoor music on most weekends.

I agree though in general that downtown is more for the all day gambler. For a 3-4 day trip, it can be easy to visit the strip though a few times. If you really enjoy the downtown casinos more, you can do the opposite of what many do. Stay downtown and visit the strip vs stay on the strip and visit downtown.

I really couldn't have said it better.

Other than that, I always have a rental car, so we generally would head off-strip/DT to do other things in other parts of town during the day, then gamble all night.

Also, its not just the gambling, but EVERYTHING seems to cost more on the strip, whether you're drinking or eating, and the lines to do things are usually much longer. Call me lazy, but I'd rather not be standing in line waiting for everything, or walking a mile to get from one place to another. Vacation time is precious. :peace:

I always have something non gambling planned, from as short as an hour walk or a stop in the Gamblers Book Store or Fremont East to an all day trip to Laughlin or Death Valley. I mainly enjoy gambling in the later portion of the afternoon (3-6PM) and then evening hours (9PM-???). I only play machines while drinking, so VP is not a morning option.

I head out during the WSOP, so I play poker during the day. When I'm done with poker, it's dinner somewhere, followed by drinking all night.

We have only ever stayed at the Golden Nugget downtown because my wife likes a couple hours of pool time each day. Other than that we are pretty much gambling all day or entity route to our next gambling spot.

This next trip we are doing Downtown Grand as it appears their pool is going to be a serious contender against GN.

My wife likes Craps, BJ and Video poker so we are a match made in heaven.

I have not been to vegas yet (tomorrow) but i have done extensive research.

Downtown seems a bit boring during the day but much more lively at night. We are going on a saturday for the live bands and FSE so we can kinda experience as much of it as we can in an evening. I do not expect to be bored.

Everybody seemed to hit upon my downtown protocol.

Ideally I split my time between downtown and the Orleans. I usually have a rental car, so it’s easy for me to get out and about.

When I stay at the Orleans I like to enjoy an hour of sunshine at the pool. When I stay at the D, the pool has no appeal. The biggest benefit to Orleans vs. downtown is that it’s closer to the Pinball Hall of Fame, and the temporarily shuttered Flipperspiel Wunderland. But I’ll gladly drive over to them from downtown if that’s my primary motivation during the day. Otherwise the portion of my downtown stay is when I prefer to make a road trip to whatever it is I’m interested in seeing. Last time that was Mt. Charleston. Great drive.

My beverage of choice: a $1.75 tap of microbrew at Main Street Station. I have been known to walk over there for a glass of their brew at the casino bar, especially during the afternoon. I can grab a bottle or can of macrobrew at any casino, but it’s worth the walk when Fremont Street is not crowded.

I haven’t read anything lately about the Liberace Museum opening up a smaller version of its former display on a permanent basis at Neonopolis, but count me among those who wish they could figure out a way to make things like that happen, and among those who are perplexed by the fact that they can’t make it a worthy non-gambling destination.

I guess downtown really is for the gamblers and the gamblers only.

My wife and I are just the opposite..
We stay downtown for the value (cheaper eats, easier comps, better odds, lower limits)
We visit the STRIP to walk around, where theres stuff to see, but everything's overpriced and terrible odds.

I'm a HUGE baseball fan (Go Yanks!) and I've been going to Vegas for 20 years, but it never occurred to me to catch a minor league game while in Vegas. Did a little google searching and Cashman Field looks like a great facility. Looks like I'm going to a game on the 19th when I'm in town. Thanks!

I usually spend most of my time gambling... because normally I cannot gamble at home... and I am in Las Vegas only once a year for 5-6 days.
    ---
I have not been there yet, but there is a new container park downtown that is supposed to be very interesting to walk around and visit each bin.
    ---
If you would practice online before you go, you would probably enjoy gambling more. There are many ways to gamble on a small bankroll and downtown offers lower beginning stakes like $5 blackjack, pai gow, etc... $3 craps at the Fremont. I submitted a list of practice sites today on Vegas Message Board under "Casino Gaming" on the 3rd page of the "Best Low Minimum Blackjack" question.
    ---
Also check into the slot machines that do not require large bets to win a sizeable amount of money... to find the ones that do not require max bet to win try looking at youtube... enter "small bet big win slots" or "slot wins small bet". I have won as much as $1800 on a 75¢ bet... and my best of all $65 on a 3¢ bet, the last of a TITO.
    ---
As you can tell, I love Downtown Vegas. Hope you have a wonderful time!!!
