What’s the strip like during EDC?

Usually I try to avoid big events in Las Vegas – especially when I won’t be attending that event. But in doing some “pre-planning”, the weekend of EDC keeps popping up as a time that would be very convenient for me to get away.

I realize this thing draws huge crowds. But I assume that it is a younger crowd and that playing blackjack and eating steak at Carnevino isn’t exactly what they’re in town for. Plus, doesn’t the party at the speedway last all night? Does that alleviate some of the crowds on the strip at night?

I know that there will be a lot more people on the strip than usual – sidewalks will be crowded, cab lines will be miles long, etc. But is there a huge effect on the casino, restaurants and bars? Are table minimums jacked way up? Will I still be able to find my VP games? Will restaurants require reservations? Will I be able to sit down at a casino bar and grab a beer and watch a game? Or is it just a matter of bumping into a lot more people than one normally does while walking through casinos or down the strip?

(I would be staying at Wynncore, with perhaps a night or two at Cosmo, if that makes a big difference.)

Any info you can provide about EDC weekend on the strip is very much appreciated. :nworthy:

I been in town twice now during EDC and you're correct, for the most part, these folks are not gamers, nor are they dining in fine-establishments. It does push room rates higher pretty much across the board and the airport can be a bit of a challenge as well. For the most part, it didn't really adversely affect my stay all that much and I stay at the Hard Rock. They were sleepin' or out at the pools while I was in my meetings and when I returned, they were heading out to the festival.

I was there last summer during EDC and frankly I barely noticed a difference, it felt like other weekends. Plus I was staying at PH those days which was a popular resort for that crowd and I did meet a lot of them in elevators and whatnot but not at the tables or anything. At Wynn you'll notice it even less.

I saw groups of early 20s crowd, some girls decked out in things like bikini bottoms, furry boots, chaps, face paint, etc. Not hanging out in the casino, just walking through it in the evenings and then off to wherever they go. I didn't even notice long cab or valet lines. I remember that was something we thought about and were glad to have higher tier cards, but it didn't matter much. I think they have buses that take them to the speedway.

I noticed way more crowds the following weekend while staying at MGM where they had a Bieber concert one night and Beyonce the next.

Alright then. Sounds like I shouldn't be too worried about the crowds and certainly shouldn't scratch that weekend off my list of options.

    Thanks for the info.

Oh, I'm guessing Monday is a bad day to be leaving out of McCarran? Friday-Tuesday probably a better idea than Thursday-Monday?

Carve - we were in town when EDC was going on 2 yrs ago and I hardly noticed that crew. The only time we did was when we went to the pool one morning and there was about 6 kids that were all dressed up in the furry boots and bikinis and painted up faces. They were napping on the lounges and would get in the water once in a while but they were definitely trippin. Pretty funny to watch and I was thinking maybe they might start stripping and jump in the water so we left because I certainly didn't want to witness that!:ssst::wink2:

We were there last year. The EDC crew pretty much does their own thing and its all focused around the event grounds. The only time we even noticed it was EDC was at the cab lines and in the cab listening to the cabbies complain. Hit some clubs and didnt even see and EDC'ers there.

Right, the people attending this are NOT on the strip much, they are at the event!

No issues with the EDC group. They were more fun to watch than the normal street characters.

    ;)

Amazing, if you wanna get an eyeful of scantly neon clad young women... As you'd expect, a lot of burnt out freaks also. You usually only see these people early in the morning on the strip as they stagger back to their hotel to sleep for 15 hrs...

It's sort of a merge between the folks you would find back in the day at a Grateful Dead concert and what the kids you'll find on a typical club weekend in Vegas.

Had a few try to play BJ (green chip) and I tried to help, but they played the vibe and did things like stay on 12 against a 10 or hit a 14 against a 5. I was doing well, but they tapped out after the dealer stopped busting most hands.

Good times and if you can snag a room comped, go for it because the rooms fill up fast and room costs are at the highest all year with the possible exceptions of NYE, CES, MM and maybe Chinese NY.
