Played My First Round, Yesterday !

Frost delay of 40 minutes.
Tee'd off - as the 3rd group at 8:40 am.

First two holes -
I stunk it up.
Then, I slowly settled down.
Not much - in the way of scoring -
( in fact, I didn't total my scorecard up - it's in my bag )
Two BLOW UP holes - one on each side.
Only one par - but I missed about 5 par putts !

It was warm on the back nine !......and NO SNOW !!!!!!!

Might be playing tomorrow morning ?
But I have Saturday's first tee time at 8 am !

Our two municipal courses open today, but we don't even have a hint of green grass yet. Just all matted down and brown.

Some houses still have snow piles where they get no sun.

We have reservations for Angel Park in Vegas on Friday.

 

I feel for you and yours. Here in this part of Texas if we go 3 days without being able to play the guys start getting the shakes. We lose our swing; we start making statements which cannot be verified once the warmth returns....but how those in the colder areas are able to sit out for months is beyond our comprehension. And we had a cold winter by our standards....certainly light by yours.....

I always marvel at the posters that say things like, "That was the last round of the year." Or, "Taking the clubs out of winter storage now." It makes me sad for them!

Playing Royal Links next Sunday for our anuual 3G (Golf, Gamble, and Guzzle) trip. Desert Pines a week from today.

 

Playing in Sacramento this week, then down to play the Farms, Bridges and Crosby National next week. 10-12 rounds in Hawaii at the end of the month.

Every round will feature a birdie or three, a handful of pars and seven "others," minimum. lol

 

Yes & no. I bowl and am decent with a ~182 avg, but I don't want to do it year round. 33 weeks is plenty. Same with golf. I enjoy it, but wouldn't want to do it year round. In Vegas, where year round golf is possible, I started skipping weeks.

For me, winter with no golf, makes the entire spring/summer/fall golfing experience more enjoyable. End of Oct I'm happy to put the clubs away.

But it doesnt really bother me ,I've played a lifetime of golf so I really dont feel like I missed out on anything. I'll get out there soon .

 

I've only played one round this year and I was very pleased with the results. I hadn't picked up a club since sometime in October and I went out with some friends a few weeks ago and shot 83. I'm in a business league that starts on Wednesday and the weather is warming up just at the right time with the forecast showing around 70* on Wednesday.

 

Played my first round today

Was a little drizzly this am so I got out by myself and zoomed around till 13 where i caught up with a nice couple from Mass. They asked me all about AC .
Hit the ball well for the first time this year.

 

42-44 with six three putts on amaaaaaazingly slow greens.

 

I played yesterday, again ( but at my "home" course ).
I had the ENTIRE course to myself.
It had rained overnight -keeping people away -
but was just misty for my
entire round.
I saw NO ONE on the course !
I shot a 96.....that's a little high, for me, even in April.

The greens were air rated ( sp ?) -
fairly HUGE holes --
I had a 10 ft putt ----
about halfway to the cup - the ball hits a hole -
bounces straight up in the air + stops dead !!!:evillaugh
Unbelieveable !
Another putt went the complete opposite break - by 2 feet !!:Þ
Got my Tee ball straightened out.
Playing the next 3 days ( on Stay-cation )......hope my back holds out ?

 

Ken, which courses in Hawaii?

 

You know, I'm not really sure, haven't even totally nailed down which or how many islands I'm visiting. Just shooting from the hip: Volcano and both at Waikoloa on the BI; probably both at Kapalua and Pukalani on Maui. If Oahu it will be Ko'olau and something on the "value" end or if Kauai instead Princeville Makai and Poipu.

 

Ken, have you played Kiele since Jack re-did it?
I'm curious as to its new designs. I always loved #5?, the par 3 over the tree canopy.
I hope Ko'olau is in good shape. It varies with the windward weather. Pools of water in the bunkers can make for an even more challenging round.

Playing in Hawaii is tough work, glad you're up to the challenge.

 

Twice. I look forward to the pending tweak of the Mauka nine. Hole by hole, those inward ones are just solid, I'd even say better, discounting for the views of Moana.

 

Got a few golf questions for Ken

Have you ever played the Wynn? When we were there a few guys said it was $500 . Also the difference between blades and cavity backed irons .I always thought blades were mainly used by low handicappers because they can work the ball better ? And I'm not buying that 86,I think your just laying for bets LOL.

 

I've played 'em all up there (publicly accessible).

Playability v. forgiveness. But with advances in metallurgy and design the difference isn't remotely as material these day. And of course lotsa companies are selling "blades" with move built-in forgiveness, be it a slight cavity or weighting.

Historically, cavity backs were almost exclusively cast, as well, and better players felt investment casting produced inconsistencies in the metal and "hot" spots. That's essentially been tossed to the side just as forging is being done with a lot of game-improvement.

Some companies that don't have bazillions invested in the weekly marketing barrage directed at players/consumers will tell you the contrast isn't nearly as stark as the ads would have you believe. A lesser-skilled player will notice less fall off in performance on a shot hit low-heel or high-toe using a game-improvement club, but the biggest shovel isn't going to let anyone go flag-hunting who doesn't have a consistent shot pattern. I have a true blade I've been messing around with and I'll tell you the problem is me, not the club. And there are those who'll tell you a harder-to-hit club is a learning tool. I think I hit Ping's S55 blade better than my i20s.

I think avid recreational players need to spend more time getting the driver (and that could be a 3w for many) dialed in, finding a putter that fits (stroke-type, length, lie angle) and likely lightening up on the shaft flex, rather than in running right out and getting the hottest new iron. An extra wedge or two wouldn't hurt, either.
