Do you have to have your SS or SIN card to cash out a bigger ticket? I know my number and NEVER ever carry my SIN card with me anywhere. I keep it in a lock box. That is what i was also told to do my human resource office because of how much people can do with it. I would prefer not to have to take it if i don't have too. Will they just take your word for it that you know your # or do you have to give them proof?

    Expecting a big payout? ;)

Don't bring your SIN card at all. Leave your passport locked in your hotel room safe. If you are lucky enough to win a big jackpot, tell them you're Canadian. If whatever ID you have on you isn't enough (drivers licence, etc.), offer to come back with your passport. Never ever keep your passport on you, always lock it in the safe.

No, not expecting, but hoping lol.

Would never travel with my passport either. I do have my DIL as well as another form of id that usually works most places.

Just wasn't sure about the SIN card, thank you.

No SIN needed. Leave it in Canada.

If you do get a big win where you'll need to apply for the 30% refund, then get your ITN number. There's a charge for these now and they only last five years. Don't do it until you need it.

You are a Canadian so it doesn't matter. All they will want from you is picture ID.

They will only want to see picture ID but they do require your SIN. So long as you know the number, you don't have to carry the card with you.

You shouldn't even carry your SIN card at home. It should be locked up at all times. If you know the number, that's good enough. Don't carry it around ever, ever, ever.

Better yet, burn it and you will never have to worry about losing it or having it stolen :)

Good advice Lola. And this just in...(a little off topic for Vegas but kind of interesting for Canadians and SIN safety)...

I just read that as of two days ago (March 31), the government has stopped issuing SIN cards. They will now send the number in a letter and are hoping this will discourage people from carrying their cards around with them. People are to note the number but store the letter in a safe place. It will save the government money and provide less opportunities for thieves to get your number.

    Kinda makes sense!

We do keep ours locked up at home in one of our safety deposit boxes, along with birth certificates. When i was young & naive i carried it around but not for years now.

I also agree that i would rather lose my license than my passport. I can at least get home & it is only $10 to replace.

I have never been asked, or given my SIN number when getting a handpay in Vegas. Doesn't matter, they don't need it for the forms.

Agreed. Used to carry my ITN. They didn't want that either.

I need to correct this. Apparently they did ask my husband for his ITN number and since he didn't have one, he offered his SIN number and they took it. So that doesn't necessarily mean that he needed it.

Big oops on my part since speculation isn't helpful. Sorry bout that. :(
