I've only been to Vegas a few times and it's always been focused heavily on the strip. However, this time is different, this time I don't have to get some suite at the Cosmo or TheHotel, I'm going solo!

My wife has been the driving force behind staying somewhere nice, personally, I'd just as soon take the free rooms at the Quad rather than pay for something else... I mean, not having mouse crap on the bed and having a functioning shower is pretty much the extent of my concerns. If there aren't weird and mysterious stains on the ceiling, floor, furniture then it's pretty much heaven for me.

Basically, what I'm asking here is which hotels should I consider staying at? I want something clean, safe and cheaper is always better (I consider $50 or less per night cheap). I'm going with the wife before my solo trip so I'm gonna stop in and check out each casino, just wondering where I should focus!

I love playing VP, drinking a beer and smoking a cigar to relax. I also love walking around, my favorite casino game is craps and playing poker is a fun way to spend a few hours.

I'm going solo in July and am staying at the Freemont.
It's in the middle of everything. Small rooms but nice.
I believe their rate is or was like $35/ nite..
I enjoy there buffet as well, sea food Tue and Sat ..
    Very good breakfast.
A good selection of slots and VP. And their table games
    are nice as well..
That's just my opinion and it seems like everyone has one.
    Good luck.

Most of the downtown casinos would fit your description, but I'll suggest Main Street Station. 9/6 JOB VP, good beer brewed on the premises, 20x odds on craps, but no live poker.

But the great thing about downtown is no matter where you end up staying, all the casinos are a short walk. Possibly the biggest negative is that in the wrong room location, some can be very noisy well into the early morning from the bands. If you're not going to be in the room until 1-2 am, it's not an issue.

Another vote for the Main Street Station!

To add to Joe's and Robertintx comments: Cheap rates, clean and no resort fees. MSS rooms are a bit bigger than Fremont. But because you're solo, I don't think that matters anyway. I've never stayed at the Cal, so I can't tell how their rooms are.

To me what makes the MSS stand out is it's decor and its "museum pieces" scattered across the casino. Don't forget to go to the men's room if you haven't! The buffet at MSS is nice and cheap too.

    Have a good solo trip!

I'd check out the new Grand. If you are going with your wife on an earlier trip, I'd stop in. Brand new renovations and casino is nice. We ate at the rest. one evening and just had sandwiches, but it was very good. Get their player's card. We did and played a bit there and now get a mailer each month offering 2 free rooms for that month.

I am a fan of The D... I have had excellent rooms there and I was used to the Desert Inn, Stardust, etc..... their comps are great... better than I've found anywhere else downtown. There are $5 tables as well as High Limit tables and their odds on table games are the best downtown. Pai Gow Mania and Freebet Blackjack are fairly new and you get a lot of playing time for your money. For craps, I go across to the Fremont's $3 tables.

Have fun... I hope you like downtown... I love it and think if your wife would give it a try she would be surprised at the quality and would especially like the short distances to walk between casinos.

If room doesn't matter, Four Queens. The VP bar at the Chicago Brewing Co. upstairs would be nirvana for someone like you.

Just stayed at the Downtown Grand. Still new and nice. A couple of block walk to get anywhere, but that's like next door compared to the Strip.

Ditto the 4Q's. Just got back from a 5 night stay there. People are great. Good dining options and the cigar bar at Chicago Brewing company. Magnolias was great for breakfast (huge coffee cups always full) and the $10 prime rib was surprisingly good.
The IPA was outstanding at CBC.

MSS is great too. Great VP at the boars head bar (9/6 JOB) and they are cigar friendly. 5 micros on tap... The only thing missing was an IPA. I enjoyed the hoppy wheat beer at the bar. The 777 brew pub is featuring an imperial IPA that will knock your socks off. :beer:Its as good as any "I'll call it premium IPA" I've had. On par with Nugget Nectar. Its price is not reduced for happy hour but it is well worth the $5. Dining options are limited to the buffet or 777. What used to be a good buffet is now just OK. The 777 is really outstanding.
    Have fun :drunk:

Four Queens. Right in the middle of Fremont. Cheapest of downtown. No resort fees. Rooms are worn but clean. Always had fantastic service everywhere at 4Q. Chicago Brew Co & cigar bar is right upstairs with VP.

Wow, these have all been some great suggestions and information. The CBC cigar bar sounds like the place I want to be, though I've certainly heard a lot about MSS and the 777 pub.

My plan, I'm gonna go downtown on my next trip in a month or so. I'm going to walk through the Plaza, the Grand and the D. I'll probably get some players cards, play some VP and grab a drink at each place and check things out. Then I think I'm gonna have to stop in at the MSS and play some craps and try out there beer. Once I lose all my craps bankroll, I'll hop over to the 9/6 JOB machines.

Then, to cap off the night, I'll swing into the CBC cigar bar and enjoy myself for a couple hours there. I think by that point I'll have a decent understanding of where I'd like to stay for my frist trip downtown.

I'm excited! Thanks for all the responses!
