I flipping around my car radio dial this past
    weekend -
Came across some guy asking a Cosmo housekeeper
    some questions......here's what I heard.
    .
She was new to Vegas ( I guess USA, as well ? )-

She got a non-union housekeeping job at Cosmo.
    She makes $14 an hour.
Usually, works thru her lunch break because she has
to finish her number of rooms by a certain time.
    * sorry folks, I can't remember how many rooms she
    is responsible for ?
    But......
she did mention the shower bathrooms have alot of glass
and cleaning all the glass in the bathroom is VERY time
consuming......therefore she works thru her lunch.
    *
That's about all I heard....I had to get outta the car.
    *
Actually, I thought $14 an hour was higher than I expected ?
Add tips on to that.........she ain't doin' too bad.

I tip $5.00 a day for housekeeping, I would think if half do, you could make @$30.00 an hour.

I also tip $5.00 a day because I feel they work very hard for their money. I
also hate to leave the room a mess. OCD I guess. If you take care of them, they will take care of you.

Well, you can't depend on tips on something like that, and I'd be willing to bet a majority tip a buck a day or a buck a day per person, figuring they paid enough for their room.

That said, I don't know about you, but $14 an hour to clean up puke, poo and other nastiness that I am sure is left behind on floors or toilets and such isn't enough to get me to do it.

I have read some nasty stories about LV hotel rooms, and can you imagine with all the partying, drinking and whatever else the disgusting messes left behind?

and what is it after taxes?

    Eww....

Plus it's pretty labour-intensive. If she's not protected by a union, she can be fired in a heartbeat so you can bet she's not complaining to management about hours or working conditions.

I talked to our housekeeper at the wynn in January and she said that they clean 8 rooms a shift. Yes it is a crap job but for no schooling that is a good wage considering cost of living in Las Vegas.

I could never be a hotel housekeeper. I can barely keep my own house clean. If I can't clean up my own messes, no way I'm going to clean up someone else's.

With everything that's going on in my life right now, I've decided it's easier to name the dust bunnies and think of them as pets I don't have to feed or walk. :wink2:

I know we've made some mighty big messes in Vegas, but our suite hostesses always bag up all the trash and tip well for the extra work.

8 rooms has to be well below average I'd think? For a casino the size of Wynn they'd need an army of housekeepers. Can that be right?

I'm quite neat; if the room is well kept, I tip $5/day and leave it out each day not at the end of the trip. On the one occasion we hosted a party in a wrap around terrace at Cosmo, we tidied up, put all empties in boxes, bagged garbage, etc. As I recall my husband left $40 tip that day.

Housekeeping at the Wynn or Cosmo is going to take a lot longer than "housekeeping" at the Flamingo or some such place. That said, I seriously doubt it takes an hour to clean one room. I also think that far less than 50% of guests even think of tipping a housekeeper, if they get something from one in four rooms they are probably doing well.

$14 an hour is about what a new LVN makes - and they have gone to nursing school - they clean puke, poo and other nastiness, they also can be hit by patients, cursed at and work at any hours of the day or night and have to work every other weekend. They have student debt to pay back as well.

$14 an hour without an education is pretty good money.

Yeah, I think you're right about that. Even one in four is probably high.

Still a damn good wage for a job with almost no barriers to entry. Good for them.

Haha, what nerve indeed! Lucky duckies working full-time in a crappy job earning barely above the poverty line for a family. What has this country come to when the working poor can afford to feed themselves? :wink2:

I once had to run back to the room for cash while staying at the Wynn. The housekeeper was there cleaning and when I walked in she was literally on her hands and knees scrubbing the shower floor. I don't doubt that they only are expected to clean one room per hour. There's a reason why you never see any dirt/scum buildup on the showers or floors at the Wynn/Encore.

I also think that the talk about cleaning up HUGE messes, or puke, feces, etc. are grossly exaggerated. No doubt that will happen, and with it being Vegas, fairly frequently, however, people are talking like every room these people walk into looks like the suite in the Hangover.

I agree. I think that the government should pass a law to make everyone in the country rich and only have to work at a desk six hours a day.

Yes, I have been in my room while housekeeping cleaned it. I don't think they are allowed to clean while you are in the room for their own safety but sometimes when they come to the door I tell them to go ahead and they do.

They scrubbed the bathrooms even though I keep everything pretty clean. They also spend a lot of time making the bed and they are usually small women but they lift up the mattress on all sides. I lifted the mattress and it is quite heavy and I am an adult man in decent shape! They have a long checklist for each room that they go through, vacuuming, dusting, tidying up your things. Some rooms will be worse than others. It looks like a hard job and with very little pay I would not want to do it but I am glad someone is. I think very few people tip them unfortunately. :nono:
