The growth of the club scene in Vegas seems to polarize a lot of the people on this board - they love them or hate them.

Well, according to Jon Taffer's opinion, the club scene is peaking and you can look forward to more upscale bars in the future for those who "don’t want to hear thumping all night long", but still want "to have a drink in a cool environment full of sexy/easy/friendly/powerful people".

Not a club hater, but Taffer is right, there's got to be a saturation point for this stuff. Clubbers, enjoy these days... They will be remembered as the golden age of Vegas clubbing.

I think Taffer is totally on the money. Here is a guy who has seen the shifts first hand in the nightlife industry.

Lets not forget this is a cyclical trend. I liken what is going on today parallels Discos in the late 70's and early 80's. Hell you could probably look at history over the past 130 years and see patterns where people gravitated to nightlife of paying for overpriced alcohol and entertainment / music / dancing just in the context of different social tastes.

I think Holly Madison's partnership which is re-inventing the Fourty Duece model will be interesting to watch. I think that concept flamed out too soon, and could see a resurgence. Not to mention Vegas has an underserved demographic in the late 30's to early 50's who still want to party, but not in the same way as people in their 20's.

I think the new champagne bar at caesars, the chandelier bar at cosmo or the re-do of bond bar at cosmo is what he might be thinking.

Didnt read the article but that is what i would think is the future.

I get the club thing, i just dont want to pay for it.

To me the whole club scene is for people who cant make thir own fun,

I have travelled all across this world many times and can speak with some authority when i say that the best times I have had were on street corners and out of the way places.

For those in the know, a street corner in stanley market ,hong kong. If you go straight you continue with your shopping. If you go up it takes you back to the main street by a bunch of really cool galleries.

they serve street food and have cold beer. A couple of tables.

Some of fondest memories and business deals were forged on that corner.

I have no memories except one or two in fancy overpriced/ forced fun type places.

Even then I made my own way and had a funner time then the other drones.

i disagree with you about the bond bar as its already filled with db's as hes mentiond in his article.and ive noticed its the marque spill over really bad and party pit crap.but it makes cosmo a shit load of money

    fizz is really nice

Just read the article and saw that they actually mentioned chandelier bar at cosmo. I think its concept is awesome and it stays strong because of marquee and it being in a "party"hotel but it would also do well as a hotel/casino lounge/bar.

Stanley Market blows, its one of the main tourist traps in HK. How could you describe it as a place for "those in the know"? Its like calling Times Square a cool little local secret. Instead of wasting time in such a sanitized tourist area just cross over to Kowloon for real open air markets all the locals go to after work where you will definitely get into some crazy adventure.

Also Hong Kong has a huge nightlife scene that looks just like the nice lounges and clubs in other cities. If people there could just have more fun hanging out on the street corner it wouldn't exist. You liked that because its new to you, but if you live in a city things like that are old hat.

And no one is going to make the fun for you at a club or a lounge in Vegas or anywhere. If you go in there grumpy or not in the mood, then you're not going to have any fun. I've gone to clubs in Vegas and not had any fun sometimes. It will be nice if we see some nice lounges in Vegas, right now most of the places that try to be lounges are more like upscale casino bars.

Yes, the new "Fizz" at CP is exactly the type of place he is talking about. Don't expect any discount from "club" pricing, though.

Off topic, so I'll keep it quick:

    • Drive across the island to Stanley is beautiful
    • The town is not bad, but the market is very cheesy and touresty
    • Night Market in Kowloon is very cool experience

I was going to post some pictures, but decided it was too off topic... so just one because it was one of the best meals I had in the region (restaurant on the water in Stanley), and it looks almost "Las Vegasy".

This will be an interesting subject to follow. The world constantly changes and seems to change in a shorter and shorter time frame as technology advacnes. Vegas is "so" about the money and being first in the newest craze that when a change is in the air, that place seems to transform before your eyes. Look how quickly everybody went "family" in the 90's and then how quickly they reversed it once it fell out of vogue.

Interesting story when you think about how many posts you see just on this board about people 30-50 looking for a bar/lounge that suits their demographic.

Plus, you have all the 20yr olds that have been clubbing in Vegas for quite a while now that are quickly becoming the 30yr old group. Not to mention the returning convention market that is now populated by that same group of 30+yr olds that have to be somewhere at 0800 the next day and can't be up till 4am.

First thing that comes to mind is my favorite property, Wynncore that has some very cool venues (like Tryst) that could easily be turned into a hip lounge and still keep a few clubs on property as things transform and you know Steve Wynn will be at the forefront....he always is. And look at Bellagio and Hyde...that place is already a cool/hip lounge for the first part of the night. I know my wife and I really enjoyed the atmosphere in there last Sept.

The other interesting thing is this guy and his peers are "nightclub people" but first and foremost, they are busininess people and they "are" about following the money. Who isn't in Vegas?

As a final note; The other thing I see w/ a 28 yr old daughter (and son-in-law to be), their age group that has grown up with this Vegas nightclub scene seem to be making some pretty good incomes whereas the generation behind them seems to have gotten stung harder from the economy that got slammed about 6 yrs ago.

Time will tell on this one but one thing's for sure....nothing happens slowly in Vegas and things are always happening in Vegas.

I agree Dino and this will have an impact on more than "what sells" in Vegas. Think the future housing market.....many boomers are counting on the investments they have in their homes to generate retirement income when they sell......who do they think will pay the prices they expect? Not the hard hit late Gen Y and millennials that's for sure. Housing prices could well plummet.

As you said, things happen quickly in a Vegas so while the trend is to jump on what satisfies most Gen Y's now (clubs, the Linq) in the foreseeable future, the trend could revert back to what gamblers want.

The Club formula never changes, just gets new adornments. I breakdown the club formula pretty simply, please note I am not intentionally trying to exclude LGBT:

    1) Young girls like to dance, Young Guys want to have sex with said girls.

    2) Guys will pay extraordinary amounts of money to impress or get said girls drunk.

    3) Drunk people usually hook up for sex.

    4) Club makes high profit from alcohol sales.

This business model never changes, just ebs and flows in volume with each generation.

Very well said. While I believe there should be more "ultra" bars, I do not think clubs are going anywhere. People were going to the playboy club, studio 54 etc back in the earlier days.

Night clubs change as the times change to suit the generations. They will always find a way to make it work regardless if its big name dj's, bottle service....

Now I think bars need to step up also and cater to the ppl that do not want to go to night clubs and to just have a good time with good drinks like Taffer is saying.

I agree w/ you guys that there will always be night clubs or whatever they may morph into thru the years because as Funkhouser pointed out, the whole driver goes all the way back to caveman days....it's all about the pu$$y and always will be:wink2:

But in all seriousness, Las Vegas does need some nice high end bars/lounges with almost club like decor for the people that do want to have a few drinks and socialize in a "cool" place w/o the pounding base.

Downtown Lounge and Atomic Liquiors are great downtown bars.

Have enjoyed the West Wing Bar, Foundation Room (early hours) and Peppermill on the Strip.

Vegas nightclubs are going no where at least any time soon! Seven of the top 10 grossing clubs in the US are in Vegas with XS and Marquee grossing $90M in revenue each. The times will always change and evolve, clubs will change names and themes but the clubs will not be going anywhere.

With that said, I am a big fan of Jon Taffer and think he is right as bar as the bar scene goes in Vegas, there is a lot left to be desired especially for the 35+ plus demographic who are not into the EDM and bottle service. I myself am 26 and avid club goer especially in Vegas so I don't venture to many other bars per se in Vegas but from what I see there aren't many quality options.

Clubs are for kiddies and their plastic money and attitudes

Lounges are for adult who appreciate a cocktail, good service and perhaps the occasional amazing live performance.

Chungking Mansion is the place to make deals in HK!

Wait, what kind of deals are we making on these street corners?

Isn't the deal bypassing Chungking and going straight to the mainland these days?
