School project, las vegas mobile app

So I've been given a school project where I have to develop a mobile app for something. I've decided to focus mine on the casino industry, however not actually gambling on the app itself but a mobile app that would be used in a place like Vegas to help add to the experience.

Some of the things this app would do would include information about upcoming poker tournaments, and maybe have a list of where the progressive slots are at. The app would also have infromation about nightlight information like upcoming shows and DJs.

So my question to all of you is what kind of features would you like to see in this kind of app and what would you be likely to use?

Any ideas are appreciated!

 

Don't know if it is an issue for your project but All Vegas Poker has an app that covers daily tournaments in Vegas with times, locations and buy-ins.

However, I think something club based would be effective and in the right target group for app usuage. Something with club hours, upcoming DJs or Artists performing, maybe reach out to club host and include their contacts in the app. Could be handy to have to set up a night on the town.

Just my 2 cents as a 26 year old club goer. I have my hosts I deal with pretty exclusively but would definitely browse an app as I have described above.

How about an app to track and record your play. You could use GPS to auto pinpoint what casino you are in, then have drop down menus for game played, duration, avg. bet, notes.

 

I think that would be cool, but how would it keep track of all that data? Would probably require a decent amount user input and I doubt that would be very popular. However I like an idea for notes and gps tracking.

 

Wouldn't be unreasonable. Look at fuelly, they don't even have an app, it's purely a mobile website and requires a fair amount of user input, but they have tons of users that religiously track their mpg stats.

 

I'm a newbie to the world of apps,does something already exist that updates current traffic conditions ? I.E the airport to the surface roads to the hotels?
Would be a handy tool to have if your cab driver blames traffic for wanting to take the tunnel..

 

Yes it does. Depending on how customised you want your white labelling to be it can get expensive but there are multiple solutions. For your cost benefit I'd suggest linking into google maps. Not sure off the top of my head what level of support it offers though. Been a while since I did an app that involved a mapping element.

That's exactly right. Informational based apps have to be current or they are useless. That's a challenge in Vegas because so much is always changing whether it's gambling/food/entertainment. If this is going to be a one-off for school and not something you plan to keep up to date then you would be fine. If this is an app you want to make available to the public then it's going to take a lot of work to keep current. Review apps are useful but there are plenty of them out there already.

Do you need to do something that's never been done before? Or can you take an existing app and give it a new slant?

 

Just a word of caution - if you do have an amazing idea, don't get it out in public now! Wait until you can get venture capitalists interested and go commercial with it rather than it becoming a known entity at a vulnerable stage (such as now). A more established player will likely get fat off your idea if you do that.

Also - don't forget, the best apps do one (or possibly) two things very well. You need to think of something that warrants an app.

Off the top of my head, a news aggregator website that pulls in only Vegas news or some kind of app that searches Google images for Vegas images only and allows you to store them into albums on your phone.

Don't be too ambitious. Our development costs for even a basic app will be between 10 and 20k (that doesn't include any kind of supporting services such as project management, digital ecosystem integration, inbound marketing strategy etc etc. It's literally just the programmer charge.

 

An app like Tinder for Vegas casino hookers would be very useful.

I agree with this. I have looked and looked for an app that I could use to easily record my gambling for tax purposes. It would be great if it used GPS to record my location, I could take a picture of the machine I'm playing and/or enter the machine number. It would record the time I sit down. I could enter the amount of money I put in. Maybe record my average bet. Record the time I finish and how much (if any) money I take out.

 

Is there a happy hour tracker yet? Your other ideas sound good too, just focus on doing one element well. People who want an app on progressives probably wouldn't care about an app for clubs and DJs.
