I have an excellent GF! She was at ABC today and they had a tasting going on. Now she sips Crown Royal, straight up, while drinking beer. I also do the same Crown sipping with either wine or beer.

She knows I think the Crown is smooth, but has more "Bite" than I care for. Yea, I know, I am a wimp.

She was at ABC to pick up some Crown on sale, tried the Wiser's, and notice it was much smoother. So she bought me a 750ml to try (Good Girl).

Tonight I tried a teaser taste (1/2 shot), and it is smoother. I'm on Night Call for work until Sunday morning, so all I can do for now, is this tiny little teaser sample.

Anyone else try/drink this? If so, what do you think of it? We are not Big Money, and yes, there is much better out there. But, for the price point, what do you think of it?

Last, is it easily found in Vegas VP Bar Casino's?

I only drink whiskey so i have tried it, but don't remember what it is like. I know i do not like any of the american whiskey's i tried. I used to only drink CR but now i actually prefer Gibby's.

    Now we're talkin'!

Being from Canada, I always found Crown the lower end of the barrel, however, always loved Wisers.

It is a bit sweeter and smoother.

I have never found it available in Las Vegas - however, if they start to offer it, I can guarantee many hangovers will ensue!

    Anyone know if it's available?

Gibby's - I wonder if that is a Canadian term? We would always feature Friday night imbibing with two bottles (26-er's) - one Wisers for me, and one Gibson's for the two 'lightweights'.

Has to be a canadian term since from what i know you can not get it in the states and i have never found it at anyplace i ever was. I will be taking my own drinks to vegas (for while in the room or on the street) since i just find canadian whiskey and coolers to be far superior.

I am not a lightweight in any way but i do remember that i can drink more of Gibby's than i could of wisers before feeling it, it seemed stronger.

I wasn't implying that 'lightweights' only drink Gibsons - I find it stronger than Wiser's too - the comment was about how I would give them a hard time about drinking 1/2 a bottle to my one bottle

Now the cooler thing is true - the Canadian coolers are made totally different. How do you intend to take your own drinks? Driving down?

In suitcase, and flying. can take them down but can not bring any back. The ones i buy are in 1 litre bottles and they are plastic. I looked into it and u can take them. The reason they are different are because they are made with rum or vodka and in the usa they are malt based so they can be sold at stores. Not sure why they wont sell hard alcohol everywhere, solves the problem lol.

If people came up and tried our alcohol they would not look at theirs the same again lol.

Weiser's is being distributed into the states, only recently have I seen it in liquor stores. A colleague from Toronto has been drinking this straight for many years and swears by it. Canadian Whisky is predominantly made with rye grains while Bourbon is made with corn.

Well, my mom always said there's no accounting for taste. If something is so good, there's no reason to keep it out of the USA, a market that's bigger by a factor of 10. But I guess its true, the best stuff doesn't travel far. You just might encounter one or two things in Vegas that are otherwise unavailable in Manitoba. :drunk:

But on a trip back from Toronto, I picked up a Texas Mickey of Alberta Premium at the duty free. Makes a fine Manhattan.

I'm not familiar with either Wiser's or CR, but after doing some interwebbing, it looks like the minimum aging is 3 years per the wiki on canadian whiskey. Many blended whiskies don't state an age since they draw from several different barrels.

Aging mellows the overwhelming alcohol flavor and lets the character of the grain and aging barrels become more prominent. Despite being a scotch noob, even I can tell the difference between a 10 year and 18 year single malt. I'm guessing the "smoother" taste of the Wiser's you all are sensing is due to longer time in the barrel. The wiki on Wiser's did say it was aged for 10 years, but there is no age declaration on plain CR.

It could have something to do with the canadian tariffs our government puts on things. Alcohol is way more expensive up here. CR is made just down the road a few hours from me. You can get some CRs that are aged more than others.

Gibby's is aged 12 years, smoothest of them all i find, i will have to try wiser's again just to see.

    Wiser's

Haven't seen Wiser's for sale in the states, but our selection in Washington state isn't great, since independent liquor stores are a fairly new thing. Also haven't seen it in Vegas. I generally order Crown Royal and Ginger Ale, sometimes with a dash of bitters and a lemon twist, at the bars.
I've bought it several times at the Canadian duty free stores before returning to Washington, and enjoy it. It's smooth. The past couple of years they've tended to push Crown Royal, with "Buy Two Get One Free" deals.

Slightly off topic, but that maple Crown Royal is dreadful stuff. Honey Jack Daniels is a different matter! I've got some Crown Royal Black (aged in oak barrels) but haven't tried it yet.

I'm finally off the Friday, Saturday Night Call..... Time to try the Wiser's....

    Well, the Wiser's Whisky........ Yuhummmm....

    I LOVE IT!!!!

    Same price as Royal, Really???

I only found one bad thing about Wiser's, and could be a concern... but let's not spoil a great moment! :nworthy:

Soooo smooth and clean taste over the Royal. Nice, but not harsh, burn on the throat, with wonderful aftertastes.

    Yuhummmmmm Red Wiser!

    :kill: Maple Crown Royal.

The funny part is, I use it to make the Regular Crown Royal drinkable. After experimenting with different ratio's, I mix 4 parts Crown Royal and 1 part Maple.

Works for me. But straight up, ughhhhh!

Honey Jack Daniels, now on my list of things to try, thanks!

I only drink Jack Daniels. As for their honey jack...yuck! I think it taste just like the candy Bit O Honey. I haven't found another whiskey that I like. Straight up for me...if I mix it, I like it with 7up, cherry 7up or ruby red squirt.

    Drinks

For you Canadians who brought up Wiser's, you've got a great export product that really sells well in the states - Fireball Whiskey. A barmaid in Reno recently called it "liquid amnesia." I told her I'd call it "massive headache" if you drank that much of it (way too syrupy sweet for major consumption). Mix a shot of it with another popular Canadian beverage, hard cider (now catching on in the states), and you've got something that tastes like a liquid apple pie.

You can buy a few different varieties of Wiser's @ Total Wine in the LAS area.
They have a couple of locations in the area and you can look at their offerings @ www.totalwine.com

I looked at the Total Wine here in Florida and they only carry the spice and the rye version of Wiser's. Have no idea what they taste like.

Also, the one I have just says Wiser's, and the Total Wine says JP Wiser's.

I just picked up a bottle of Wiser's Rye, I see a Manhattan in my future.

As for Fireball, mix it with Rumchata and you get cinnamon toast crunch, an awesome shot.
