Next month, we will be staying at the California for the first time. I was asked if we preferred the East Tower or the West Tower. I know nothing about either tower, but I'm sure my friends here do! So, ............. ?

    West Tower

Distant wise east & west tower are about one hundred (100) yards apart, east being closer to registration. But the west tower rooms are a little roomier, closer to the walkway to Main Street.

As previously mentioned, the West tower rooms are roomier and have gone through renovations. The elevators open up into the 2nd floor mezzanine of the casino and then you can walk straight to MSS via the mezzanine/skybridge that connects the two properties. Or you can go down one floor and it opens up right in the middle of the main casino. The Market St. Café is closeby, also the Redwood Grill and the Pasta Pirate restaurants.

The East tower is closer to registration and bell desk, also closer to the parking garage and valet. The rooms iirc were smaller, more run down but still clean and functional. I prefer the west tower but wouldn't make a fuss if I end up with a east tower room.

Stayed in both, hated the east tower, thought the west tower was much nicer, bigger, brighter rooms, much nicer bathroom.

I give a nod to the West tower, just because you can get off on the 2nd floor, making for easier, quicker access to MSS. Room wise, I haven't really noticed much difference between the 2 towers.

IMHO, the west tower bathrooms are much larger than the east tower bathrooms. The west tower bathrooms contain the bath, vanity and toilet (some rooms even contain 2 sinks). The east tower bathrooms the vanity is outside the bathroom area. You can see pictures of the Cal here:

    http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g45963-d91763-Reviews-California_Hotel-Las_Vegas_Nevada.html

Click on the travelers photos to see the rooms and bathrooms.

Many women that I know prefer the larger bathroom in the West tower (can spread their stuff out since there is lots of room on the vanity).

I prefer the West tower facing west but some others don't like it because it faces Main St and the railroad tracks, some people don't like the added noise from both, you can hear the big trucks and ambulances and sometimes the trains passing by. It isn't a problem for me since I'm a heavy sleeper.

Some people like the East tower facing east but request a room away from the FSE as the noise could be a problem. At least you don't hear the traffic as much although your view is mostly of binion's parking structure.

Since both towers face each other just make sure that you don't get an east tower room facing west or a west tower room facing east as you will be looking into the other tower. Plus you can hear the a/c fans between the 2 towers, if you are on a lower floor it could get noisy IMHO.

Another factor which makes the noise an issue is the old style single glass windows. These are poor for heat and sound insulation. The noise through the closed window was so loud that I swore it had to be partially open. But no, it was closed, yet the noise came right through.

Possibly. The problem with those rooms is that there is the a/c unit and big fans down below making a lot of noise so if you are on a lower floor it could get noisy. Might be more quieter on the higher floors but I cannot guarantee it since I didn't stay on that side after the first time I experienced the fan noise.

Might be your best bet is the west tower facing east, but rooms farthest away from the elevators since they are away from the stuff downstairs (restaurants, a/c, etc. where there might be noise). You are also away from the east tower rooms so you don't have a view looking into the other building. But then again you might get the "beep beep" of the trucks that back into the area to drop off supplies early in the morning or during the day.

The east tower facing east might be more quiet, you face binions garage a block away and not as much street traffic so hopefully not much truck or fire/ambulance sirens). You might hear the FSE noise at night so maybe a room closer to the elevator? But then the bathrooms are smaller than the west tower.

West tower high floor away from elevator quiet, but.

This is true, but know that you will be getting the morning sunlight shining into your room. The windows are covered by wood slats and there are no drapes.

Your view will be of the Mob Museum, the Grand Hotel, and a mountain range in the distance.

If you have a West facing room, Main Street is right below you. You will notice more traffic noise. An occasional train blowing its horn will be heard as trains pass a block away. Main Street Station Hotel guests have the full effect as they are right next to the tracks. Your view will overlook Main Street Station (railroad tracks behind it) , the Plaza Hotel to your left, and another mountain range in the distance.

My last five stays were at The Cal.
