Hello, we're looking at going to LA after Vegas and I am curious if the train is an option. Are there any trains other than Amtrak, and which station would I use out of Vegas? Staying at MGM if that matters.

Is it possible to be cheaper to take the train opposed to renting a car? I checked Amtrak but I'm not a fan of there site.

Hmm, train is definitely NOT an option. There is no passenger train service currently to Las Vegas from anywhere.

If you are going to rent a car once you get to LA, might as well rent it for the trip anyways... unless the one way charge is a killer. Catch Southwest Airlines instead.

Maybe in the future. I would definitely take a luxury train, with bar, casino car, etc.

We'll all be pushing up daisies before this ever would come to pass.

For the OP: Short hop out west, car is best. And cheapest. But it also depends on where in "LA" you are going and what you plan to do in So Cal.

Thanks, someone told my GF that we should take the train. I guess that suggestion was not from experience. Seems a little silly not to have trains in and out of Vegas.

    Megabus

Megabus do a bus service from the South Strip Transit Center (near South Outlets and not far from MGM) to Union Station, LA.

Costs from $1 each way depending on how far in advance you book.

Takes around 5 hours and has free wifi on board. The buses are also new and more comfortable than Grayhound.

Union Station is a really convenient place to land in LA as you have the Metro Red line which will take you to Hollywood in 20 minutes. Or you can get local buses to Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, etc.

The closest station is in Kingman, Arizona (about an hour and a half away) if you really wanted to train it there. Looks like the train departs after midnight and arrives in LA just after 8AM. You'd just have to figure out how to get to Kingman to make it all work.

It's weird that they don't have train service to Vegas when train service is one of the reasons that Vegas can in to being in the first place!

For the most part, American passenger rail service is 80 years behind the times, and notably in the west, where spaces and years of doing it the other way mean the car is king. Rail is time-consuming. There are so damn many gaps in service (speaking more regionally here) and schedule. It's relatively expensive for what you get. And while heavy fixed rail works between major metropolitan areas, So Cal is huge and anything but metropolitan when you consider the huge space w/i which those 20 million folks reside.

And I go back to that car thing. It might seem a novelty to some, those who say they'd love to kick back and get sauced and leave the work to someone else, but we don't separate from our cars well here, ultimately -- not in the numbers needed to make something like this pencil out.
