I have seen a few threads on room safes but nothing on luggage locks. I have tsa approved locks on all my bags so i was thinking of keeping all my valuables (wallet, laptop, passports etc) in my luggage and keeping them locked. If someone wants to steal from your room will they take the whole bag (i have heard multiple reports of ppl coming in while they are sleeping to steal wallets and such).

Does anyone do it this way and have good success??

They're not even close in my opinion. Luggage locks are really flimsy as is the luggage itself. Plus if they wanted to take the whole bag it's no big deal. Nothing suspicious about walking through a hotel with luggage.

I feel confident leaving things in the room safe. I know they can be easily opened by a security insider but that's a small risk in my opinion.

If you don't have faith in the safes, I'd invest in one of those Pacsafe travel safes and loop it around something sturdy and fixed and maybe out of sight. I bought one of them years ago for overseas travel but never ended up needing it. I still think the room safe is more secure.

I used to do this, but I got to wondering how easy if would be for someone who really wanted to steal from me to see the lock on the bag and know that's where the good stuff was at. Unless it's hard sided luggage, it wouldn't take much of a knife to cut open a bag in no time.

I use the room safe now and make sure the chain/latch and dead bolt are thrown when I'm in the room.

Very easy to break into luggage. I never lock them in the room or when checking them at the hotel or on the airline or on a cruise.

We used to use the safes, but probably have not in a year or two or more. We do put valuables out of sight - sometimes.

We almost always leave the DO NOT DISTURB sign out from the day we enter until we leave. That reduces, but does eliminate people coming a going.

We often have a few thousand in the room, laptop, and ipad.

Call us naive, lucky, stupid or just using good sense. Not sure which.

the biggest thing with the in room safe i am worried about is forgetting our passports. I have read some trip reports about things left in safes often enough to make me a tad bit paranoid. I have never used an in room safe before. I also have never taken my laptop either before.

We always leave the DND on the door, i do not like housekeeping coming in ever. I get my towels before i leave in the morning form the cart.

People coming in to the rooms while the guests are sleeping seems to be more a problem of ppl not locking the doors proper, Excalibur looks like it is a bit more tricky since they do not have a normal deadbolt and we are there for 2 nights.

I have always used the room safes and never felt unsure about it. That would require someone getting into the room (key cards logged) and then getting into the safe too.

I have never taken my laptop and am contemplating taking my iPad but that will fit in a safe.

I always check the safe twice though. I set my code and lock it and then open and lock it again to make sure it works well and that I can get in.

I'll use a safe every time, unless it's a carry away safe and here is why.

I'll not even go into the thing where the thieve just takes it somewhere convenient or farther...

    open most luggage easy

Agreed. In Vegas, your things are probably safe. Just put valuables in safe.

link is broken, just takes me to the main page.

The only reason i am going to bring the laptop is because i do not have an ipad and we turn our cell phones off and i leave mine at home usually because of roaming in the USA so i just don't bother with them. With wifi not free in a lot of places i need something if just to be checking out directions and stuff. We have 2 laptops so i will just bring the cheaper one which is worth less than my phone is even so...........

I personally wouldn't worry about your computer. I always bring my laptop when I go to Vegas. Some rooms have safes that hold your computer. I have always left my laptop in my bag.

When there is no in room safe, I use a TSA approved luggage lock and keep everything inside the locked compartment.
Never had a problem with either method, but when there is no safe to use, and I don't feel like going down to the front desk and use their safe-deposit box; then using the luggage lock for my valuables keeps them safe from a wandering housekeeper or maintenance guy and gives me piece of mind as well.

I use the room safes, but I suppose if I had copious amounts of cash I would use a house safety deposit box. What really disturbs me is that the casinos are too chicken shit to put surveillance cams in the hotel hallways.

I can't see why unless it has to be approved by a VMB mod first. Here is a second attempt. Not the same vid though.

    Room Safes! EZ answer!

You can't open a room safe w/a plastic knife, luggage you can!

It's a A mandatory req. for a room stay for us.

(unless were going to Hokey Pokey like Laughlin or Reno,
where they say Ha? :poke:a room what?)

    Hotel safe & milockie

I use this as well. Extra layer of security. That way anyone (hotel staff) can't just use reset code to get into your safe. I have also heard that people have used something that shows your fingerprints on the numbers. After you lock your safe wipe down fingerprints or press all the numbers.

There are so many other options than luggage locks out there. I have seen so many portable personal safes come on the market. Many would be something you would then hide but others are designed to be tethered like a laptop lock. A thief would have to break the lock tying down the safe and/or the lock on the safe to get into it.

Room safe is always utilized and pretty packed.
The DND sign is put up the moment we enter the room and left there until we leave.
When packing to head home, the safe is one of the first things to get unpacked to prevent forgetting an item.

just FYI, the general tsa locks aren't very good. My friend used one at the gym to lock his locker. someone else broke into the locker, claiming it was his locker and stuff inside. they said that the guy just twisted the lock and broke it and took all the contents of the locker.

I usually use the room safe for my primary belongings, travellers checks, cash, laptop, passport and other valuables. I put stuff that I buy (not valuable stuff though) in my suitcase and use a master lock to lock it. Yes, it is easy for someone to break the zipper or cut into the suitcase but the lock is just a deterrent. I put the suitcase on the top shelf in the closet along with my other suitcases or carry on rollaways.

If you are really afraid of your valuables many hotels have safety deposit boxes for your valuables that might be more secure than the room safes.

Like others I put the DND sign on the door although I have them clean my room once every 3 days and lock everything up.
