If you were taking a road trip from Dallas to Los Angeles...would you add an extra hour and a half onto your total drive and make a stop for the night through Las Vegas? Or even just stop there at all?

I'm thinking about it......... We can either go through Tuscon/Phoenix and bypass Vegas or we can go through Albuquerque and make a stop. Wondering what you would do?

In my mind, this is a no brainer. Never miss a chance to stop in Vegas. :peace:

You're on a Vegas message board and you're asking that question? No doubt you should stop. If your time allows it, I'd even stay a couple of nights either going out or coming back.

No brainer, assuming it's relatively convenient to spend the night there. I probably wouldn't pass through just to spend an hour or two. Hotels are always a problem on the road unless you're camping or RVing. In Vegas, you know what you're going to get, and it will be a bargain to boot.

I'd go straight to LA then go to Vegas on the way back to Dallas

I think I can budget one or 2 nights in on the way there, probably get a comp. Will have the parents and teenage kids in tow (headed for VidCon Youtuber convention) but I think they'd enjoy it. Instead of just one night, should make it worth stopping through.

guapo- need to do it on the way out there, we might be broke on the way back!

I knew you all would talk me into it...I just needed the nudge and the convincing that I'm not a degenrate!

17 hours from Dallas to Vegas - would you leave in the evening and drive through the night in order to arrive in Vegas in the late afternoon or would you leave in the wee morning hours to arrive in Vegas late, late night (possibly midnight?)

We are tough drivers - we go for long stretches without many stops. Just for food and bathroom needs :)

Hell, not only would I stop in Vegas, I would never make it to LA at all.

did the denton/vegas drive a few summers ago...left around 2 pm...rolled into boulder city just after 6 am for breakfast...easy drive...but i40 was shutdown due to a wreck outside of albuquerque and the back up was miles and miles and miles...we diverted down some dirt roads and eventually come out ahead of the wreck...just pay attention while driving...have fun...easy drive!!!:beer::beer:

I personally would arrive late and not drive overnight if I can avoid it.

    Depends.

Have I been to Vegas lately and am I really jonesing to get back, and is the next opp way way out in the future?

Would the 'rents and the kids really like Vegas or am I just saying that because if I think they'd really like Vegas it will make it easier on me to choose Vegas?

Is the 3-4 hour driving detour from the most proximate route (I-40) worth the time and the delay in getting to the ultimate destination?

Is there something along the route not named Vegas that all of us would like to see, do and experience instead?

Does it make more sense to or would I rather drive I-10, which really puts Vegas out as a big detour?

I think the biggest question, unless I missed it, what are you driving and how much of your personal goods will be with you? I think I'd be a bit paranoid to leave to much in a parking garage or valet.

We moved from Washington to North Carolina 4 years ago, we stopped in Vegas for 3 nights.

In 6 weeks we are moving from North Carolina back to Washington and we'll be stopping in Vegas for 3 nights.

I don't think I would ever want to pass time zones without swinging by Las Vegas

Absolutely, I'd take the turn to Vegas... but then I'd do anything to avoid spending a minute in the wretched State of Arizona!

Ken, always the voice of reason!

bswim, I never thought about that. Definitely something to consider.

The kids are up for it (the parents, not so much) but it does mean that it shortens our CA sightseeing by one day before we have to get to Anaheim for the convention. We have time to decide and it will also depend on the finances. Trying to fit in a day at Universal and a day at Disneyland. Those tickets are not cheap!

Hubby and I will have just gotten back from Vegas about 6 weeks prior (we go in May) but there is always the urge to go!

I know a lot of y'all scratch your heads and wonder why a guy who has been to Vegas so many times and who has written three Vegas guidebooks and a bunch of articles doesn't always default to "Vegas, Vegas, Vegas."

I'm really not some shitbird stick-in-the-mud.

I'm a BIG fan of Vegas. I'm just also a BIG fan of the rest of the world, as well, and there just happens to be more world than Vegas, so maybe I look like some stick-in-the-mud shitbird after all.

I've never seen a stick-in-the-mud shitbird so I'm not sure exactly what one looks like but I'm still sure you bear no resemblance to one!

I agree. We are venturing out of the Florida-vacation world and trying something new this year. Even though our families are from CA, we've never visited as a family and I have no idea what is in store but it should be interesting to say the least.

I actually wouldn't take the detour because I would feel shortchanged while in Vegas.

I have to do Vegas a certain way and I could not achieve that with a one nighter. I don't even want to do a two nighter; my minimum is three nights otherwise I'd hate having to leave with only 24hrs under my belt.

I thought about this a bit and could see us checking in and then thinking "shit, time to leave already?!"
