Info about excalibur

Will be staying at the excalibur at the end of April. Not much info on it in board other then lots of family's with kid (will be leaving ours at home). Can anyone tell me what the rooms are like, what are the best views? What is the pool like? Will the pool be crowded at this time of year? Of course the gambling?

 

The rooms are very old and outdated. But I've always found them to be clean. Just low quality, no decor... old springy mattresses, no bathtubs. The Widescreen rooms are better though. The "classic" rooms must be 20 years old.

Not sure what the pool is like.

Vegas is always really busy in April! So I would guess Excalibur would be no exception.

Gambling is fine there.. again the property is old, but they should have some new games. Plus easy access to Luxor and Mandalay Bay for better gambling. Lots of the property has had small updates. They have a new food court, and some new restaurants.

The kids thing is exaggerated... there might be some. But it's not like it was 20 years ago, where that was kind of a kids destination. Vegas is strictly an adult destination these days.

 

Excalibur is old and smoked filled. Loaded with condo hawkers and is low end in general.

I'll never stay their again despite staying in the remodeled tower rooms. The wife did not feel safe walking around the casino or near the elevators late at night.

Now if you want a cheap room and a place to do nothing other than crash Excalibur may work but plan on gambling elsewhere as it seems to be a training ground for new dealers for the MGM properties.

Only casino I get lost in.

 

Stayed there for a convention in 2012 for $30 a night (NAB) for 4 nights. Room was outdated and still had a tube TV in the room. I think all the rooms have flat screens now. Got 2 free drink coupons per night I was staying there which was cool. Only played craps but remember it being mostly $5 tables. Definitely a different smell compared to NYNY/MGM.

Food court is remodeled and a lot nicer now than it was back then. Rarely saw the security guard outside the elevators where you have to show your hotel keycard.

I used to stay at Excalibur before b/c the price was right. I switched to a nicer hotel now that I can afford more.
The rooms: Try to stay in the widescreen room. Those are the rooms they updated a couple years ago with the flat screen TV. I believe they have other updated rooms (the contemporary rooms). There are 2 different towers. One is closer to Luxor and the other is on the Pool side.... I believe the tower on the pool side is the one that was updated first.
Bathrooms: basic, with a walk in shower.. again nothing extravagant.
View: I don't know if there are any great views at Excalibur-- the first time I stayed I had a view of Luxor.... it was kinda cool but nothing spectacular. The other times I stayed I was in the tower closer to the pool..... I don't think I ever had a view in those rooms.
Pool: again its pretty basic. They remodeled the pool area a few years ago as well. Its got 2 pools I believe and a third shallow pool for kids. It does get crowded but they always had plenty of chairs when I was there. The only thing I disliked was that it is all open. There is no place to hide out in the shade at all if you get too hot.
Gambling. They have a fair amount of tables. Usually had no problem finding
$5-10 minimums. Again I haven't been there in a while but I remember there not being very many craps tables. I always did like the sportsbook at Excalibur.... good amount of seating.
Dining: There are a fair amount of spots for quick eats. Baja Fresh near the pool tower and the food court on the second floor. Dicks last resort is decent bar food but I always thought it was kinda pricy for what you get. I wouldn't say there is any kind of fine dining there though.

The other benefit to Excal is that its easy access to anything in that corner of the strip. 5 minute walk to NYNY or MGM. You can walk to luxor from the second floor or take a quick free monorail ride to Mandalay bay.

I wouldn't expect Aria or the Bellagio, but take Excalibur for what it is; an inexpensive, clean, decent place to stay. I can't say I ever had a bad time there.... I've just moved on the bigger and better things at this point.

 

If your ok staying in a motel 6 quality room then you are fine. I stayed there although it was 2005 and had no issues there.

We had out of town plans in September of 2012 and ended up cancelling them at the last minute and needed a place to stay in Vegas and ended up at Excalibur. It was fine. I would definitely recommend a widescreen room though.

I can't say I've ever felt unsafe there, and that's from a solo female traveler.

As far as kids, well they're everywhere now, not just at the Excalibur.

 

About five years ago, when I lived in Vegas, I visited Excalibur to attend a show. While waiting for the show, I sat at a casino bar for about an hour and for "fun", I counted people pushing strollers. I stopped counting when I got to 19. Parents who stay there with children leave them to play in the lobby and near the elevators. I would rather stick pins in my eyes than step foot in that place again. YMMV.

 

I have stayed at Excalibur 9 times and have never seen strollers left unattended.

For some reason Excalibur gets a bad wrap here...not quite sure why.

People really blow the kid thing way out of proportion...there are some kids but its not like they are running around everywhere. Just stay out of the Fun Dungeon and I doubt you will really notice them

The contemporary rooms are actually pretty nice, they have been renovated and have new carpet, fresh paint and decor, granite in the bathrooms, new beds that are very comfortable, digital A/C units, etc.

I can't comment on the pool

There are many options for food at all price ranges.

They have plenty of variety of gambling and you can usually find $5 table, HL slot area sucks though. CWs are pretty quick too


As has been said, it't no Bellagio or Aria but its def not a shit hole hotel

I would say Excal is much nicer than Luxor, yet Luxor is more expensive and gets better reviews for some reason.

Best thing about the Excal is it's an easy tram ride to Luxor or MBay.

 

Just to clarify, I didn't state that the stollers were left unattended. They all contained toddlers and were being pushed through the casino floor by adults. Personally, I don't go to Las Vegas to be nipped in the heels by strollers or to step over children left to play in the lobby and near the elevators.

The rooms/food may be just fine. I cannot comment about that.

 

Thanks for all the info so far on the excalibur. Basically just want a place to sleep and hang out by the pool in the afternoons.

 

I think Excalibur gets a bad rap. I stayed there last April in an updated room in Tower 2 for one night and really enjoyed my stay. Nice clean room with a great view facing North towards NYNY, good service and it actually has a really nice pool.

I didn't see a "ton" of kids, but I went later in April so maybe I missed Spring Break.

Last stay there was about 5 or 6 years ago.

Rooms: Dingy and weathered, springy uncomfortable beds, and I think there is only a shower, no tub, in the bathrooms

View: The most important thing here is to get an outer facing room on a high floor. Inner facing rooms will have a view of the other Excalibur towers and the roof of the casino. The portion of Tower 2 that faces Tropicana is probably your best bet for a good view looking north up the strip, the other portion of tower 2 would overlook the pool. The part of Tower 1 that faces Las Vegas Blvd would offer some views of Tropicana and MGM, while the other part of Tower 1 looks south toward Luxor and Mandalay Bay.

Pool: Actually it is quite nice. There are a few of them and I have spent some time there. One of the pools has a fun little waterslide and will have a bunch of kids in it. They do have an adults only pool Too if I remember correctly.

Gambling: Who knows, I know back in the day (20 years ago) it sure seemed like their dollar slots paid well. My mom's biggest slot win was had at Excalibur $2,000. These days though I doubt it. The strip is committed to slaughtering the cows these days rather than just milking them. They do have some decent Vp but only at the $1 level and that's too rich for me. I doubt you are going to find any amazing table games, just what you woould find anywhere else.

Excalibur is a good location though, and you can have a great time there. Personally, if I wasn't locked in I would check other places that are nicer for similar $$, but if your set on Excalibur, go with it and have a fun!!

 

I tried their casino for the first time Thanksgiving (my friends wanted me to teach them craps, so we were wandering around Excalibur looking for a $5 table at night). I was highly disappointed by the drink selection. If I was staying at Excalibur, I'd be sure to go to NYNY or Luxor (or, if your bankroll allows for higher limits, Mandalay Bay) to gamble purely for the better drink selection.

 

Excal is not that bad. I have only stayed there once but it was just fine. There are more kids running around than most places, I will admit that, but the casino is always fun and last time I was there they had 9/6 DDB progressive machines... That is a rare find. (I think they are gone now)

 

Same here. The X-shape of the Casino throws me off. You can never see where you entered the Casino from if standing in the middle of the X. Head half way down 1 leg, nope that's not it, turn around and try another leg. Repeat until you find your exit.

If that is what you want to do, Excalibur should suit you just fine. I think the place gets a bad rap on this board because it gets compared to all the other MGM properties and it is second from the bottom in their hierarchy (just above Circus Circus). What I find funny is that the CET properties get bashed even more compared to MGM, so if you take that into perspective, I would rate Excalibur above the old IP, and on par with Harrahs, Ballys, and the Flamingo. At least the renovated rooms for sure. The pools are better then all those except flamingo, and the tables have lower limits then all but the old IP. They also have the last ok pay tables for VP at Excalibur for lower denominations. As for location, if you like the south end of the strip, you are in a perfect spot. Just my two cents.
