I'm Robert 68 and been single and alone for years. I live alone out in the country and love it. I try to get to Vegas about twice a year, always downtown.
I usually go alone so I can do as I please and don't feel obligated to do something with someone I really don't care for.
Being retired and on a fixed income means I save up for my trips and want to make the most out of them.
Prior to retiring in in the real world, I make at least one trip a month to Vegas and always stayed at Fitzgeralds, rubbing Mr. luckies head and butt every day. But alas, those days are far gone and everything has changed, I kinda enjoyed carrying around cups of quarters.
Now after retiring it's harder to go but I try to make two trips a year. But I must save and watch my $$..
I've heard of a book you buy before going with coupons in it.
Are there several different books with one being better that the other ?
Also I've seen TR Visa mentioned several times, what is that ?
Excuse all the questions but I am curious.
    Thanks

Welcome to the Board. The coupon book you are talking about is the American Casino Guide. There is a web page where you can read about it and order if you choose. My wife and I do not get it, however, I read the Vegas Values Report at the same site. I would love to get a TR Visa, but can't apply, because I don't live in US:(

Welcome to the board! The TR Visa is a credit card for CET. When approved, you get some automatic comps....maybe $10 plus 2 free Buffet of Buffet coupons to use at any CET buffet (the one at Caesars has an upcharge) The American Casino Guide can be purchases in many book stores and many get it from Amazon who usually has a reduced price. There is also the LVA (Las Vegas Advisor) coupon book that many use. You can google them to get full info and determine which might be useful to you. Good luck!!

I just enjoy the ambiance and people watching downtown. Back when it was Fitzgeralds the second floor balcony had tables and chairs and was great for just looking around.
But, alas, I live in the past and need to get up to date, except with that Slotzilla which in my opinion was a completer was of money and ruined the view from several casinos. But that's just me, older and living in the past.

Oh no I so agree. I loved Vue Bar the way it was. Sitting out on the patio at dark with my beer and watching the action. I miss that.

    Welcome from another fellow Texan!

The freebies with that come with the Total Rewards Visa card are automatic TR Platinum status for one year, 10,000 TR credits which equals $100 to spend at TR properties, and the two Buffet of Buffets passes.

If your considering getting one plan it near your trip. The Buffet of buffet passes are only good for a certain amount of time after getting your card. But make sure you apply early enough to get it before you leave for Vegas.

Welcome from yet another fellow-Texan... as far as reward-type credit cards go, I looked at the TR card & almost immediately dismissed it.
I play the 'airline credit-card game'. Seems to be FAR more valuable. I currently have cards from American, United, Southwest & Frontier...and I currently have enough miles through them for 7 round-trip coach flights from DFW/Love Field.
With airfares pretty routinely in the $300-$350 area, that seems to have far more value than what the TR Visa offers. (Note: with the American & United cards, you automatically get one bag checked at no charge. Four total flights a year ends covering both card's annual fees with just the checke***** fee benefit.)
I treat them all like ATM cards, paying them off each month, so I don't incur any interest charges. By linking all of my bills, gasoline & groceries to these cards, I tend to rack up enough miles every year for another coach round-trip on both the AA & UA cards.)
One of the 'tricks' with these cards is to cancel after the first year. Wait 13 months (or more) and re-apply as a 'new' card holder. You then get the bonus miles all over again.
Anyway - best of luck. I love downtown as well, and agree about the zip-line. I do, however like 'theD' better than I did Fitz.

Well thanks for all the welcomes, maybe we can get together for a drink and visit sometime.
In looking into the TR Visa it seems to me that it's only good a Caesars. I'm a downtown guy so it won't do me any good but thanks for the info..
Hopefully I'll treat myself to a birthday visit in July...
Thanks again and good luck to every one including me.. :nworthy:

Your missing the point. I'm an airline card guy as well. You get the perks stated above from the TR card just by having it. You don't have to use it except to make your first charges on in order to get your introductory reward credits.

Really? No annual fee? I thought there was one.
But if not, then there's no reason at all to not get one!

I may have seemed to harsh in my first intro. by saying I like to go alone etc., etc.. But I've got a bad hip and seem to slow the others with me down, hence I'd rather go alone than be a drag or slow down the party.. Sorry if I did sound harsh, after I went back and read it I sounded that way.
But I'm not really.. Thanks for understanding.

Don's sweat it. Many people feel just like you do. I remember several threads in the past on that very subject and LOTS of folks expressed their preference or doing Vegas alone so that they weren't constrained to anybody elses pace or whims. Nothing harsh about that. Most all of us understand.

Hi Robert and welcome to the board.

I have been purchasing the American Casino Guide for the past few years and it usually is loaded with coupons for downtown and the strip restaurants, shows and discounted and free play.

I just received the 2014 issue from Amazon @$15 and it was a disappointment as compared to past years. It seemed to offer less coupons and lower values as well. Who knows, it may just be a sign of the times. It also includes coupon offers for casinos throughout the country but my interest is only Vegas.

I am sure that I will recoup my $15, but I will think twice about ordering it sight unseen in the future.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Welcome Robertintx!!

Most of the coupon books are for the strip, not downtown. If you have not already done so, sign up for every card downtown... They will mail you room, food, free play offers and tournament invites... probably more than you can use in one trip.
    ---
This website is the best one for downtown Vegas. Through the year, keep anything of interest you see on this site on a Vegas 2014 page or list. By the end of the year, you would be surprised at how many neat ideas you have accumulated.
    ---
I am in the same boat financially. I save from my social security for my once a year trip and have "envelopes" for each of 6 days. My son gives me the airfare to Las Vegas for a Christmas present. He and I go once a year... he closes his business between Christmas and New Year so we can travel.
    ---
I am 80 and have been coming to Las Vegas since 1963 or 64. Still love it!
    Once again, welcome!!!

    Welcome Robertintx!

Nothing wrong with flying solo, or wanting to enjoy Vegas at your own pace. I also prefer downtown, and really enjoyed the Fitz when it was still around... I still bring my Mr. Lucky key chain when I go as a good luck charm! I think that they did a great job renovating the D, but it lacks the charm of the Fitz. And I could definitely do without the blaring loud music and pole dancers... but then I am probably in the minority there.

Yep, I use to stay at the Fritz on a reg. basis. I'd rub Mr. Lucky on the head and butt. I wonder what they ever did with him.
I've got two or three Mr. Lucky key chains, a Fritz fanny pack, shirts and hat.
I really miss that place it was more like home.
