    My Trip Report

It's sad because I came down with the creeping crud or whatever bug is going around shortly after arrival on Friday, Dec. 13th. A lack of sleep and 3-hour time change didn't get me off to a good start at Suncoast, but the real pain and suffering commenced on Monday while trying to check into Sam's Town. The Boyd computer system, nationwide we were told, went down an hour before we arrived around 1:30 pm and nobody was getting into their room. That's also the time I developed aches and pains all over, my throat was starting to hurt, and I was almost too weak to stand. We were told to check back after 3 and were thinking about claiming bench space if things deteriorated further. Meanwhile, the machines weren't recognizing player cards and the pit crew was (supposedly) recording ratings with paper and pencil. Finally at 3 pm, the desk starting trying to check guests in manually, evidently something they hadn't done in years, which went abysmally slow. Thank goodness we had gotten in line early, and we finally got into the room around 4:30 after having to go back to the desk for a key that actually worked. (I don't know when the system came back up, but things appeared "normal" the next morning.)

Walking even short distances was an ordeal, my mental state paralleled my physical condition, and I was in pretty bad shape. I say it was just a cold, as I didn't seem to be running a temperature, though Ms. Gecko insists it was the flu, mainly because she had the shot and I didn't. Whatever it was, I still managed to play a lot of BJ and other games, but what was left of my mind definitely wasn't running on all cylinders. Having your judgment shot all to hell is not a good thing in a casino and I'm sure it contributed heavily to staying in losing sessions longer than I would have otherwise, and not taking proper advantage of the few winning sessions. Heck, it was all I could do to stay on my perch!

By Wednesday I just wanted to be home, but somehow managed to hoof it from the Sam's shuttle drop at Harrah's to Cosmo to see the Liberace exhibit, and from there to Ellis Island on that cold, breezy, and gloomy afternoon. Amazingly, the BBQ chicken and ribs combo was as great as always, even in my deteriorated condition, and we didn't have to wait over several minutes in the cold and wind at the 202 stop around the corner for the "limo" back to Sam's. There was no way I was going to hoof it back to Harrah's.

We moved back to Suncoast on Thursday and spent most of Friday at MSS. (We mainly wanted to see Joe upon his arrival that afternoon.) On the way back to catch the WAX, we "discovered" an Elvis exhibit in Binion's. Pretty darn good, especially for free. Our favorite CW at Suncoast told us that an awful lot of her coworkers were down with the same thing; and all-in-all, it was my worst Vegas trip since I started going over 28 ½ years ago! Some of that had to do with losing, but I'll credit being sick with most of it. It just made for a thoroughly miserable experience.

I apologize for posting a much less than exciting report, but there's not much to be excited about when you're feeling like crap. We're now looking at going back later this month and/or February, and trust things will work out a lot better.

That is a bummer that you fell ill, and especially at the start of your trip. Even worse, was to be feeling under the weather and not be able to lie down and rest. Hopefully your next trip will be healthy and awesome.

Turtleman is not exaggerating. He looked and sounded like sh*t when I saw him at MSS on Friday.

Every Vegas Lover's nightmare is getting sick on their trips. I'm not looking forward to it as I've dodged the bullet so far as getting sick in Vegas.

Happy New Year from one VMB'er to another. Hope this good cheer will follow you on your next trip and make it a happy, healthy, and fruitful one!:thumbsup:

    Hey Turtleman ...
Sorry to read about the misery of your Vegas trip ... especially when I know how much you look forward to those trips, and the plans you've made, and missing out on your casino time.

Last time I got sick like that in Vegas, I loaded up on Ibuprofen and Gatorade, and kept telling myself, "At least I'm in Vegas" ... but even that didn't help much.

Now, you'll be looking forward to your next trip even more ....

So sorry you felt so crappy in sin city. I had an allergic reaction last year when I was on vacation in Vegas and was so sick. Was sick the whole 4 days in vegas and then for 2 weeks after I came back. Found out I was reacting to my BP Pill they had just put me on how lovely.

Thought I had a bad cold or flu when I was there. I knew something was wrong because it was like 47 outside and I was still cold.

It took another 6 months to get it out of my system so I could brush my teeth without gagging. Boy was I messed up.

You will make up for it on your next trip. Chalk it up to one of those times we all have now that you have it out of your system you will have many future trips that are awesome.

Did you think about seeing a doc?

Maybe one of those walk ins or "doc in a box" places while you were waiting to check in? I dont know if they could have helped you,but I would have given it a shot if possible.

That really was a sad trip report Turtleman. Sorry to hear your trip turned out that way.

If Vegas can't make someone better then we know you were truly sick. Hopefully, that's it for the year and your future trips will more than make up for it.

That was sad. Nothing is worse than being in Vegas (or anywhere on vacation) and feeling crappy. Hope you are back to 100%.

Get back out there and make up for lost time!

Thanks for everyone's sympathetic comments and encouragement (except for Joe's :)). Yep, that last trip was, indeed, a total disaster; and in hindsight, maybe I should have gone to a doc in a box. I'm of the opinion that they can't do much besides writing a prescription for Tamiflu, but maybe that would have helped. We didn't have a car, however, and usually by the time things get bad enough for me to see a doctor, it's a lost cause. Nonetheless, a flu shot is on the agenda for fall this year! We're planning a return bout real soon, and while I'll probably be haunted by the fear of the same thing happening again, I trust my next trip report will be a lot happier and more interesting.

Same thing happened to me last week on my New Year's trip to Wynn. Came down with the flu on the second day, miserable the whole time. Not even going to post a trip report.
