It will be VERY interesting in the coming days, weeks and months to find out how far ahead of the time of Target's public announcement that they knew of their credit/debit cards being compromised by hackers. God help them if they knew about this even a day or two earlier, let alone as far back as late November or early December, and postponed an announcement in the hopes that the problem would go away or the fear that it would put a huge dent in their holiday sales.

Regardless, if Target even has a scintilla of morality and corporate responsibility they will offer anyone and everyone that could be affected by this breach a free credit reporting service for a year or so.

It will be interesting to see how Target makes good on this in the long run. For them to say that the issue is resolved and that they are working with law enforcement is all well and good. However, the barn door has already been opened and the horses are running amok. I want to see what they are going to do to make good to the people who were financially affected by this and equally I want to see what they are going to do to effectively ease the angst of those who may not be financially affected but nevertheless have to spend their time and resources trying to determine if they were affected.

No need for any corporate flunkies to reply to this. Target's accountability and actions in the near and long term will be all that I, and many others, will need to know before I/we spend another dollar in your stores.

We shopped at Target just yesterday (first time in 6 months or so) and used our credit-card... sounds like this was all prior to then. We did listen to the "old-timer" in front of us lecture the poor checkout girl about personal information, security, etc. though...he was really goin' off on her and makin' an ass out of himself... sounds like he was onto somethin'.

God damn hackers! I've had my credit card number stolen twice now and its a pain in the ass to cancel your card, set up a new account, update everything you had on automatic bill pay etc.

Now I have 1 debit card that I use for everything, but I only have at most $500 in the account it's linked to. If someone gets that card number the most I'm out is $500 and that I can live with.

I heard they knew about 3 days prior to the public announcement. The reason given was they weren't sure just how big the problem was or the window of time affected. It took 3 days to get all the data completely reviewed. This was mentioned on an ABC news show during an interview with a Target representative.

That could very well be true but I do not believe for one second that Target decision makers, CEO and COO among others, delayed the announcement for as long as they possibly could because they knew damn well that once the news got out their already short holiday shopping season would effectively be over.

I don't fault Target for getting hacked. Hell, that can happen to anyone these days. What I do fault them for is for not getting the info out immediately when they even got a sniff of something going wrong. These companies never learn the hard won lesson that the easiest customer you will ever have is the one you already have.

Target had an opportunity to do the right thing and they might have even come off as sympathetic. But they blew it and took way too much time in revealing the hack, all the while exposing more and more people. In my eyes they are just as culpable as the hackers, not because they got hacked, but because they waited too long to say anything.

I'm just a lowly pharmacy technician at a Target and nothing was said to any employee until yesterday about it. The only thing we're allowed to do is supply customers with the 800 number.
Just to remind anyone who has been affected or have any kind of opinion, if you shop there the employees have NOTHING to do with it so we don't need to hear complaining that "we" stole your money. I don't get paid enough for that.
Needless to say, it was a long day ha.

Since the announcement I have not been able to log onto the Target website to manage my Redcard to see if anything has been fraudulently charged. I imagine everyone is trying to log on causing system slowdowns.

I stopped shopping at Target a few years ago when they insisted I convert my Target card into a Master Card. Sears is doing the same thing, I don't need another Visa/Master Card in my wallet. Buh-by.

I'm with you Mike. A big thing to remember is that the news on the security breach was broken by a prominent tech/security blogger (Brian Krebs fomerly of the Washington Post) before Target made the announcement. Would they have made the announcement if Krebs hadn't broken the story? Who knows? Like you said, this came at the worst possible time for them during the holiday shopping season and I'd bet my right arm there was a discussion in the C-suites about whether to delay the announcement.

One area I'll disagree with you is not faulting Target for the attack. I think companies get off too easy in terms of blame when this type of stuff happens. Apparently this was done by malware installed internally on their company-wide POS systems. Maybe they secured their systems as well as they could, but we won't know that. If someone's house gets robbed we don't blame the victim for it, but if they left their doors unlocked they aren't blameless either.
