Just curious how each of you deals with the relationship between gambling and your significant others. It's proven to be a bit of a challenge at times for me, but I'm also still learning.

Lol...this thread should be dedicated to those of us whose significant other's dislike the idea of gambling. I learned early on in my relationship that any loss is an earth shattering event with my better half. Doesnt matter if I won a ton the day before...if I lost even a tenth of it the next day, I would get the lecture of what that lost money could have been used for. Some people do not comprehend the idea of dedicated bankroll, or a small percentage of income dedicated to gambling...ahem, discretionary spending.

Anyways, to make it easy, now I sort of bend the truth in what happens at the tables. All big wins are portrayed as small wins. All big losses are portrayed as small losses. Small wins/losses stay as is. Occasionally, I will share the good news of a decent size win.

I just treat my gambling money as my entertainment money. My girlfriend gets that I make a decent living and I only be what I can afford.

I did have to explain to her that me losing 1k in short order at a craps table wasn't much different than her buying herself and her mother front row Red Sox tickets, but after that, I think she got it.

haha. i agree. I should have prefaced it with that stipulation. Those of us who have significant others that don't enjoy gambling.... I think your solution works well. Keep it more centered. The wins are a tad smaller, but so are the losses. Helps a lot to do it that way.

My g/f thinks gambling is so stupid and a waste of money, but it's my money though and I can do whatever the fudge I want with it. I will never let a women tell me what I can and can't do with it.

My wife goes for all the other stuff except gambling. She plays the slots at the min just to play while I play. She would rather eat, pool, shows. 4 to 5 night is about max for her. More or less she is cool with it.

im a girl and it was an issue with my sons father, who I was with for over 7 years. Never mind if I won 6-7 hundred, he would get mad if i did not walk out with all that I won, even if I gave him money to play.. it was a huge bone of contention with him and one of the reasons we split. slots were my idea of fun and his was movies and the shooting range, I never told him how I hated what he did.. anyways.. if they don't like it they can go screw themselves..

I have to say, I have the best DH ever! He calls me a gambling junkie all the time teasing me. Even though he doesn't care for it, he doesn't mind that I love doing it because it makes me happy. He doesn't go to Vegas with me anymore, mostly because we don't trust anyone to take care of our animals. He lets me go as often as I want, either by myself or with friends and doesn't care how much I spend as long as it doesn't put us in the poor house!

He has a very expensive guitar collection and that's what he prefers spending his money on and I'm ok with that too.

It wasn't always like this for us but after many years together we both want each other to be happy and have come to the realization that we just have different hobbies and that it's ok.

I love playing table games especially craps and blackjack while in Vegas. She, on the other hand, loves playing slots. When we take a Vegas vacation together, we basically get off the plane, check in to the hotel, and meet 3 or 4 days later to catch our flight home. Occasionally, we meet for a meal together, but that's about it. The first time we went to Vegas, I did what she wanted to do, and she had a blast. We went to the Fashion Show Mall, we saw the Dolphin Show at Mirage and I did get to see MaMa Mia at Mandalay Bay. Just how I wanted to spend my Vegas vacation. At least they gave me cocktails while I stood behind her, with my hand on her shoulder, giving her encouragement while the slot machines digested $20 after glorious $20. She made it perfectly clear, she wanted absolutely nothing to do with blackjack, and there was way to much "stuff" on the craps table, it was to complicated. Guys. only 1 thing to remember out of this.... A HAPPY WIFE IS A HAPPY LIFE !

    that is all !

My wife enjoys gambling as much or even more than myself. Before she met me, she did not gamble at all.

If my wife did not enjoy gambling and

    1) brought me down or was negative to my gambling or
    2) could not entertain herself independently while I gambled or
    3) did not enjoy hanging out with me at the bar...I mean BJ table (I consider it an intimate lounge with free drinks)

I just would go to Vegas by myself or with other friends. Not need to put stress on what may be a great relationship outside of gambling.

Ditto. We love gambling together, and thankfully agree on what our limits are. We have a ball in Vegas together.

Wife plays slots. I drink and watch her. Then we go eat steaks and I drink martinis. It's a beautiful thing!

I met Lady Friend online, and after we went out a couple times, I was discussing her with my then boss. His comment: "She drinks, she smokes, she gambles? That's a keeper!"

It has been over 10 years since then, and we are still seeing each other. We both like playing blackjack, and she is coming around to VP now, especially after hitting her 1st quarter Royal on the last trip. Now I no longer have to hear "Oh I won't play max coin every time because I NEVER get a royal flush.", LOL.

I took my GF to Vegas last year for the first time.

She hated it, and more to the point resented me gambling and tried to stop me.

She is no longer my GF - we really never recovered from that!

I'm lucky - we are both degenerates! He just doesn't like to go to Vegas as much as me - he goes to the local casinos more. But when we are in Vegas together - we are on the same page, gambling, gambling, and maybe a bit more gambling.

Back in 1985, I married this girl who smoked, drank, gambled & ate meat.
    Here in 2013, I'm now married to a non-drinking, non-smoking, non-gambling vegetarian.
    Same girl...allegedly.

She really doesn't like gambling & doesn't like it that I do. But she also appreciates that I budget for Vegas & I don't go over that budget.
It irritates her a little when I win or break even on a trip, as she knows that this means that the next trip won't be far off.
I budget about $2000 a year for gambling, using direct-deposit into a credit union account that exists for that sole purpose. Win or lose, that cash accumulates every two weeks throughout the year. My annual spring trip is the one I always protect. Any extra trips only happen if, assuming I'll lose, they do not jeopardize the spring trip.
When I win (or don't lose very much), the cash I come back with goes back into the gambling fund...of course, on those rare trips where I win $1000 or more, we buy something for the house with some of it, or I just give her $500 or so & tell her to go splurge on something.

Every trip, when I'm booking, I'll ask her if she wants to come along. She always rolls her eyes and sarcastically tells me, "no thanks...not this time" (as if she'll ever say 'yeah-sure - let's do it!')

She has also come to understand (finally) that Vegas offers what virtually no other destination can - free/inexpensive lodging, free/inexpensive food, free alcohol & a chance to come back with more money than I left with.

Not long ago, she asked "why don't you ever go someplace else?"
    I had fun responding:
"You mean like Seattle or Boise? Let's do the math. $80/night for room. $50/day for a rent-car, $50/day for food, $50/day for drinks, $40/day for whatever entertainment/activity I'll do while I'm there, and about $40 total in tips. Hmmm...for three nights/four days, that's $1000. That same $1000 provides me with two days worth of gambling, drinking, cabs, eating, entertainment, hotel & tips. And, unless I lose that $1000 in the first 48 hours, it typically provides me with all of that for days 3 & 4 as well. If I come back home down less than $1000 - which is true almost every time, my Vegas trip is technically a net-win versus Seattle or Boise. THAT'S why I don't ever go someplace else!".

She rolled her eyes & simply said, 'yeah - that's what I figured you'd say...have a good time'.

I can't offer much advise as my significant other and I are both gamblers. However we understand that the money we spend in Vegas is entertainment money and is money we can afford to loose. I guess I would just explain that you enjoy this as a form of entertainment and try to link it back to some form of entertainment that he/she likes to spend money on. I'm very happy that my significant other and I enjoy Vegas together.

Personally for the wife and I it is about compromising. We know what each other likes to do and we plan accordingly.

Like one of the posts earlier...happy wife, happy life.
