The cause of the mysterious flu-like illness is unknown

At least 18 children and parents from Santa Monica staying at the Rio Casino for the youth football league were hospitalized

The tournament will continue despite the sickness of many of its players
All those affected are in stable condition

Most likely the norovirus just by the way it spread although food poisoning may not be ruled out but highly unlikely since there have been reports of similar illness all over Vegas. This is some nasty stuff. December 2010 Atlantic City we were there during the holidays and we along with several hundred others staying at various hotel/casinos all became sick from what was later ruled Norovirus, I would not wish that 24 hours on anyone. You may think using hand sanitizer will do the trick but it does little knowing that anything that someone who has it touches is easily passed to the next person. The virus itself can live on practically anything, for up to 12 hours, on contaminated surfaces such as carpet, hard surfaces, etc the norovirus has been shown to survive up to 12 days.

Yep. Stayed there a month ago and ended up walking over to the Gold Coast for gaming.

I can definitely tell you that this is not fun. I was at the Rio on Wednesday afternoon and started getting symptoms late Thursday night. I thought it may have been some food poisoning from Thanksgiving dinner, but no one else I ate with experienced any similar circumstances. However, I spent more of Thanksgiving evening in the bathroom than I did in my bed. It was violent vomiting followed by several episodes of extended diarrhea with the most foul order. It also included fever, "chills", and more uninvited symptoms. I enjoy the Rio, but don't think I'll be going back there again anytime soon til I know this situation is clear and the property is disinfected. I don't want another 24 hours like I experienced less than 2 days ago.

 

I'm glad you feel better. That sucks to ruin an otherwise good time.

 

Easily one of my favorite buffets in town. I should say WAS. Looks like I will avoid the place now.

 

Could have been one of those anti-kids in Vegas rogues I have heard about.

 

Just to be a contrarian now, give it a few weeks and it will probably be the most germ free place in Vegas after this incident.

 

There is nothing in that article to suggest the illness had anything to do with the Rio at all. The fact that all the afflicted kids were part of the same football league and at the same events is more important. Plus the fact that there weren't any other reported cases of the illness among the thousands of other guests, at least nothing mentioned in that article.

 

Sounds like norovirus. I have had it. It was no fun at all and exactly like you had. It's spread through poor personal hygiene and I'd be very wary of blaming an establishment for spreading it. It spreads everywhere.

 

The Rio likely did nothing to instigate the infliction of the virus on the property, but even they acknowledge it is a problem now.

Well, it's bad luck to be caught up in one of these outbreaks.

 

that must have been what my family had about two weeks ago.. it was bad, started with my kiddo Monday, Wednesday with my siblings, Friday with me, and Monday with my mom. It was bad, and diarrhea for all of us, leading up to the sickness. No idea where it came from, but my kid goes to preschool and we all took care of him once he was sick.. no idea why it had a day in between people getting sick. do not wish it on anyone. not even my anti barf meds could make me feel better

 

I don't mean this in a mean spirited way and I know we all started out as little babies and a lot of you on here are parents. But, kids are the best way to spread any kind of bug.

 

As they should. They have a group of travelers who are sick staying at their property and its their responsibility to warn their other guests. But unfortunately for the Rio, people are already equating this group's illness with their hotel, as you can tell by the comments in this thread and under that article.

 

Umm what was Rio supposed to do to investigate this? They probably don't have people trained to investigate it on staff. It's a fast moving situation - they had 20+ people staying on the same floor coming down sick at once - and all you can ask is that a hotel or other public facility in this situation works closely with public health officials to determine the source and correct the problem quickly. At least we know as many places try to keep this from being public knowledge.
