I recently moved up to Gold. What are people's experience with the room upgrades which are promised at this level? Curious about any property but particularly MGM and Aria as I stay there most. Are we talking view upgrade or suite upgrade? Any other perks offered at check-in?

They aren't really "promised"... it says "Room Upgrade (subject to availability)"

The upgrades are almost always going to be minor ones, like being upgraded to a high floor room or upgraded to a room with a view of The Strip.

The big thing is that a lot of people get excited when they make "GOLD" in the MLife program because its the 3rd tier and all that, but you have to remember that it takes less slot play to make MLife "GOLD" than it does to make Total Rewards "PLATINUM" and MLife is pretty generous with the Tier Credits when it comes to resort spending so its really not that hard to get bumped up to "GOLD" within the MLife program and as a result the benefits for being of the third tier aren't all that super duper.

Even at Plat upgrades sometimes are just higher floor or view.

One time the guy says he is giving me a room with a nice sitting area. I figure, cool. Get to room, to find a regular room with a 2 chair sitting area-LOL! Same as any other room. I was going to give him crap, but the front desk was busy and I realized it was not going to change anything.

    Lol.

Guest: "I thought you said there was a nice sitting area!"

Front Desk: "What, you don't like the chair?"

Well for me they worked well on the last trip:
Aria upgrade to a one-bedroom corner suite.
Luxor upgrade to Large one-bedroom players suite (1000 sqft).
Excalibur upgrade to one-bedroom parlor spa suite.

The upgrades are great, but the best thing is the hotel check-in and the buffet line pass!!!!

Last time I tried to get an upgrade at the Mirage and they wanted $375 a night. Not impressed. So much for gold.

I stay at the Mirage each time we go to Vegas guess a change is in order.

Nobody does afaik. If an upgrade is available you will get it regardless of MLife status, short of Noir

I don't believe I have ever gotten an upgrade as a result of being gold. I have asked, and was told nothing available. Last trip to MGM Grand they told me when I made the reservations they would mark me down for an upgrade, but no luck.

It didn't make me mad since all the rooms are nice, but the "benefit" can cause more bad feelings than good.

I am gold and I was upgraded at the Luxor last June to a pretty nice tower suite (actual separate bedroom with living area and wet bar). I was traveling with a group that needed the lowest price Vegas trip they could find so I booked us all on a third party air & hotel package that included 2 rooms (got a third room through myVegas). When we checked in they upgraded my room to a suite without me even asking. I was pretty surprised since I booked third party. I chalked it up to the fact that I was gold level and actually paying for the room.

I think there's also the fact that upgrades happen for plenty of people regardless of status. I've gotten room upgrades and I have Gold (most recently at MGM Grand over the summer, where I booked a Grand King and got upgraded to a Spa Suite), but I wouldn't say that those room upgrades were because I have Gold.

I have been upgraded once in 5 attempts and that was at Bellagio and that was an upgrade to same room type but with lake view.

The below 4 stays all resulted in the same replies "no upgrade unless you pay for it".

    2 x Vdara stays
    1 x MGM stays
    1 x Aria stays

At the time of the Vdara and Aria stays I was platinum and still didn't get one.

I usually arrived in the evening(8-9pm). 4-5 trips I never was able to get any sort of upgrade. Therefore it was pretty useless to me. Maybe if I were to arrive closer to 2-3pm it would have been available.
