This could also go under annoyances.

Why do restaurants have steak knives that are too dull to cut butter, or even worse, knives with serrated edges that tear the meat?

    My theory on that

Maybe knives with cerrated edges last longer than regular knives that have to be sharpened? We dont go out for steak that often ,but the last time was at The Rams Head near AC and I'm pretty sure they had regular blades.

Easy answer is because they get piled into a dishwasher, banged around, dropped, kicked, stacked and otherwise abused to the point that the spine of the knife is the sharper edge and the restaurants can't be arsed to sharpen them.

Plus, what Joe said. Go to a better class of steakhouse and this won't be an issue unless you order your steak well-done, in which case you are beyond talking to. :Þ

That could be the answer. I have noticed that Longhorn has better knives than Outback.

I wouldn't give Paulie Walnuts a sharp knife either.

Their lawyers probably decided it was dangerous to supply diners with sharp objects. They could potentially hurt themselves and sue!

Not so sure about that Ardee. I went to STK at Cosmopolitan last trip, and was plagued by a different issue with the steak knife.
It was the handle that was the problem, not the blade!

Their (presumably) trendy designer silverware had a triangular handle which was offset to the blade in such a way that you couldn't actually hold it naturally and have the blade line up with the food.
It was like trying to use chopsticks for the first time.

It's one of the oldest tools known to mankind - how can anyone s**ew it up?!?

Gordon Ramsay Steak has a similar thing going on. Usually a knife is fairly uniform in its shape, but at Ramsay's the handle and the blade are in opposite directions. If you're holding the knife so that the blade is facing down (vertical), the handle is facing the opposite way (horizontal). It's definitely a change of pace from my standard steak knives at home.

This is a smaller version of said knife that comes with the Sticky Toffee Pudding.

I ordered a couple steaks to take up to the room a few days ago and asked the bartender not to package in the plastic utensils. He said, "no worries, I'll hook you up." He gave us a couple of those big steak knives that look like big buck knives! I kept slicing thru the container. They were some serious steak-knives!
