January will mark the last time i can take vacation for a few months so I thought about going to back to Vegas (really, where else?).

I noticed that the weekend right after New Years and before CES, the hotel rates are more than reasonable. ? Is it really slow right after New Years? Is it a few less people or is it like traveling during the week?

The very first time I was in Las Vegas was on January 4-7 a few years back.

To me it seemed pretty busy, but in hindsight (especially after spending Labor Day weekend there this past year) it wasn't.

Yes, it does quiet down right away... though there might be 250-300K people showing up and partying for New Years Eve, just a day or two later and most of them are gone.

I've done this trip a number of times and it really is that slow. Last couple times I stayed at Mandalay Bay and it was almost peaceful (to the extent that Vegas can ever be considered "peaceful"), although it never really felt dead or boring or anything. But the day before CES, things pick way, way up.

Thanks folks. I don't mind if that weekend is weekday slow, but if it's even slower than that, I might have to play with the dates.

I desperately need another vacation since I probably can't take time off again until June. Vegas never disappoints and I can't see going somewhere else.

I've done that weekend a few times. And I'd say that comparing it to a typical Vegas weekday is probably about right.

I attend CES every year... but I stay down-town. All the convention action is on the strip. While I don't actually pay for rooms (comped) the "tourists" that I talk to every year tell me the room prices down-town are not affected by CES. So you might consider these properties?

    Just presenting an option.

Not sure about this year, being new years is in the middle of the week. I think people will stay till Sunday then CES people will be getting in on Sunday when room rates drop.

My brother and I are booked to head out Thursday (01/02/14) through Monday (01/06/13). Our originally motivation was for NFL wildcard weekend but we realized after making the reservations that we will also be in town for 4 of the BCS college football bowl games.

Should be a heck of a weekend. Not sure if we will ever make it out of the spots book though.

Thanks for the info and encouragement. I booked my trip afterall. I forgot about the BCS games and love to watch football at the sportsbook. It will also be my last bit of Vegas (unless business allows) for several months. Let the countdown begin.

I stayed at Bally's last year from Jan 1-5, and I don't remember it being noticeably slower. It seems like it's always similarly busy whenever I go, no matter what time of the year it is.
