Came across this video on another site and thought it was interesting. It shows a counter being backed off but I was surprised by how nicely the pit boss treats him. My image of a backoff was not like this.

The problem here is the counter jumped his bet from $5 to $200 three hands. If your going to count you need to be a little more discreet about it and increase your bets at a more moderate rate. I've only ever been backed off one time from a local casino...I was stupid, raising my bets similar to the gentleman in the video over a very short period of time. I have never been backed off in Vegas.

    Interesting video though...thanks for posting.

    that was enlightening
Basically they only want loosers playing blackjack not people who know when to raise their bets to actualy win some money off them. Play like a shmuck and hope to hell you get a lucky shoe or fuck off. :nono:

He obviously wanted to get backed off. A spread from $5 to 3 hands at $200 is way too noticeable.

I saw that video shortly after it came out.

Love the part at the 3:50 mark when Colin says "Ok can I wait for a good count and then bet?"

    That's hilarious!

Obviously this is not how you want to handle a back-off. Just grab your chips and get the hell out of there. Come back later and cash them, or better yet, have a friend cash them for you.

The counter in the video (Colin) is a member of the Holy Roller card counting team. This guy is the real deal.

Yes I agree...he obviously went into the casino with this intention....for his video. I was just commenting, so those non-counters on this board would understand why he was backed off, if it was not apparent. :peace:

I thought they play in the North West, Seattle maybe, if that makes sense.

    wow, that was interesting.

The only time I was ever "backed off" was when I was playing a single deck game at Casino Royal. I really was not spreading my bet that much and I was playing fairly low stakes.

The Pit Boss never said a word to me. He simply came over, leaned into the dealer and said something in his ear, and walked away.

After that, the dealer would shuffle after every hand. I asked the dealer if that is what the Pit Boss said he had to do, but he would not tell me.

When a new dealer came in for break, the Pit Boss did the same thing before he started dealing. I asked that dealer what he said, and he confirmed that it was to shuffle after ever hand.

Doesn't that make a lot more sense as a technique to get the counter to go away? It saves everyone the unpleasantness of a backoff/barring and accomplishes the same thing--the counter will move on.

It's what Missouri and New Jersey (and other states probably) will do generally since you can't ban people for card counting in these states to my knowledge. But it definitely drives the point home. However, the Nevada "you're not welcome to play BJ here" is still a bit stronger.

In West Virginia they will ask you to leave the table...they will say something like this "Mr. XXX we appreciate your play, however we ask that you refrain from playing BJ here, but you are more than welcome to play slots or other table games"...this is what they told me. Very polite about it but I knew what they were talking about obviously. This was my fault...it was when I was inexperienced.

I wonder what percentage of counters would continue to play (for the fun/risk) if all games were dealt from CSM's?

I'd imagine the purist counter (a true advantage player) really has no interest in actual gambling.

I was disapointed that there were no back rooms or hammers in this video.

I am not a 'true advantage player'. But, I do try to maintain an accurate simple plus-minus count whenever I play a two-deck game.

I don't mind CSMs at all...especially those with decent rules (S17, DAS, LS, RSA).
Playing a CSM with near-perfect basic strategy is not a bad game at all. If you play the swings right, and leave during an upswing, it's not that tough to leave +100 (20 units) at a $5 table, betting just $5 & $10 per hand.

There is no need to run out of the casino and sweat cashing the chips later. Every backoff I've had is of the variety "you are welcome to play any other game in the casino other than blackjack." Nothing like being 86'ed from the casino, (which is possible, of course, but highly unlikely unless you keep coming back and using the same name after being backed off the first time.) Basically, they can't and won't attempt to seize your winnings in any way. (The worst ones were when I had lost many hundreds and STILL got backed off :wink2:)

I saw the documentary about the Holy Rollers and they seemed to take great pride in getting backed off. They seemingly spread as big as they wanted and tried to win quickly, fully expecting to get tossed. (Stuff like $10 to $1000.) No attempt to play with any kind of cover.
