Hello all, To all those wanting to relocate and think jobs are everywhere I thought I would tell my story of relocation.
I have been a manager, server and bartender for 20+ years with the majority of my experience being a manager for both corporations and mom and pop restaurants.
I relocated from a 55k year job in Key West Florida with the hopes of wanting to escape the humidity of Florida and just wanting to see the West. Some say I was crazy and "why would I leave paradise?" At one point in my search I thought they were correct.
I moved to Vegas August 30th and started looking for a job ASAP. I read some comments on the board here and they were %100 correct!!!!! Finding the job you want was nearly impossible let alone very frustrating.
I would go to restaurants and find out almost all applications must be done online and no human interaction is involved. ( that's another story thanks to technology) LOL..... After submitting applications to over 30 restaurants and casinos my savings I came out here was starting to dwindle and I thought my dreams were gone. After leaving Vegas Oct 25th to go back to Florida and re group I finally was offered a job that I really wanted after applying for this position way back July 27th, online that is, and going through several interviews and background checks.
I guess what I am is saying that it took me over 4 months to find a job I really wanted and thank you to the group here for being spot on when it came to employment here. I now fly back to Vegas on the 5th to start my new adventure in a city I really look forward to calling home. I will be making more than I was in Florida with 1/2 the cost of living !!!!!
Thank you to everyone on the board for all the great accurate advice!!!!
TO all those wanting to relocate: Bring plenty of money and patience and good luck. This was just my own personal experience that I really wanted to share.

Thankfully if I move to Las Vegas it will be because I'll be based there with my airline. So job will be taken care of. Tho it's looking more like Denver will be my base. Bag that I don't do cold...I'll move to LV and commute.

Congratulations, and thank you for the follow up. I am a big fan of Key West and to when you made the original post, I thought the same thing: why leave paradise? But after making three trips there in the past two years, I realize how expensive the cost of living is for someone in the service industry.

You have some great advice about having resources to hang on for a few months while looking for work. Also, keeping your nose clean for all these years helped pass the background checks, I'm sure. Best of luck to you!

By the way, why is there no great pizza in Key West? The one place on Duvall St. is "OK" but I think they just don't have their sh*t together. They should be slinging slices but it is just such a hassle to go there.

Awesome! I mean, it's kinda like that everywhere. I have a couple friends trying to move out to Los Angeles, and they've spent 6 months looking for work out here, and no luck.

I still kick around the idea of moving to Vegas all the time. Someday!

Congrats. Hope things work out. I too have been thinking of a move. Cost of living is extremly low compaired to NJ. On top of that, I love the city that never sleeps.

May I ask, why not look for a job over a few visits?

Hello board...Sorry for the late reply but have been busy with new job. I want to thank everyone for the thanks it is really nice to see everyone really cares about people on this board. I am a manager for Chili's and have 8 weeks of training. I am training on the north rainbow location in Summerlin. I really like the area but will be placed in a different restaurant once training is complete. I do not have a car yet and the bus is my transport. It is about an hour to get to work early am and about 75 min getting home at rush hour. I live in a weekly rental off Flamingo and will be buying a car once I get a couple paychecks under my belt. I also want to move out of the weekly rentals as the its very noisy and kinda some sketchy people. The place serves a purpose for the time being. I look forward to the next month when I can move out and get a car !!!! I am taking my relocation in steps. To me its the best way to transition and to see where I want to live. I am hoping to end up working in Henderson Chili's off Eastern!! Fingers crossed..... Does anyone know of any decent and affordable rentals in that area ??? looking to stay around $700 or less a month for a 1br. Once again THANK YOU to everyone for the kind words and good luck to those who want to make the move!!!

I worked at Chilis way back when I was 15 turning 16 and actually lied about how old I was to get the job....I started busing and then moved to cook and worked there for about a year and a half

it was so far back that it was the only Chilis in San Antonio, Texas at the time and they opened up the second one just before I left

it was a really really great place to work the management was top notch and they had really high standards and they held you to them and at the same time it was pretty fun and the managers were cool as hell too.....I will not go into the MANY stories haha

there was a bunch of people that had worked there for pretty much the whole 5 years it had been opened and started as busers and then cooks and then bartenders and they were all really cool to and some of them were making damn good money because they got their full "cooks pay" even as bartenders so a couple of them were making close to what managers were making without all the hassles and hours

they had a pretty good training regiment for managers I thought and you started busing and cooked and waited and on and on I thought that was pretty good.....at the time they would take 6 years at Chilis over a 4 year degree and experience to become a manager

I learned so much there even as a younger F'off just making cash that I still keep in mind today if I was ever to work in or own a restaurant

I wished they still slammed their own fries, but I still like the food overall and still remember how to make a lot of it or at least the setups

I think they are still a pretty well run company and I know they are not what they used to be in a lot of peoples minds compared to when there were a lot fewer of them, but I hope you do well and I think you should if they are even half the company they used to be.....too bad management can't be like they were back then hahah

damn the stories from working there

Hope things work out for you. I would suggest looking for a condo for rent as opposed to an apartment. Condos are flexible about the rent and many are owned by investors who are looking to pay bills and make the money as the condo appreciates. When I was looking for a new place years ago the agent I talked with told me about a 2BR for $750. I said "No thank you $650 is my limit". Twenty minutes later he called back and said the owner would take it.

I am/was in about the same situation. I lived in Hilton Head, SC. My 600 sqft condo was too small for me, wife, and 2 dogs. I have 15 yrs as a server/bartender. I saw where I could get a house w yard for 1000k or less - 100s of jobs on craigslist and lots of jobs on the casino boards. We moved and didn't apply much til we got settled - I thought HR rep would see an out of town app and move on.

I have about 75+ apps out right now - been here a month. My wife was hired to work as a hostess (15 hours per wk, we thought more)

I have a few interviews lined up so hopefully something soon -

FYI - if someone needs a rental real estate rep - my agent was great PM me and I will forward his info!

    Greeting to the Board!
