Back in 2009, my friend (who counts cards) and I were at a casino in AC playing blackjack. After a shoe or two my friend gets a tap on the shoulder from a pit boss or floorperson and is politely told that the casino considers him a "advantage player" and he is not welcome to play blackjack anymore (or something to that effect). They told him that he can play any other game they offer but if he sits down at a BJ table they will make it difficult for him to play (i.e. shuffling the deck halfway thru, then a quarter way thru, then so on). Since then he has not been back to that casino.

Fast forward to today and I get a call from him saying he is coming down to AC and wants to meet up. He was asking me about going back to this casino was a good idea, and he wonders if the "facial recognition" stuff they told him was true, and what if he were to try to sit at a low level table. I told him it was not worth the hassle to try again, and that I don't know if they truly have that facial recognition software or anything that would alert them that he was in the casino.

Does anyone have any experience on this matter?

I don't know about casinos specifically, but facial recognition software that is that good does exist and is readily available.
And I do know that casinos employ choke points that make sure everyone entering a casino is caught on camera.

First, it doesn't sound like he was "trespassed," so if he wants to go back, he can.

The facial recognition stuff isn't that great and wasn't any better in 2009, assuming they even had it in place in 2009

Tell him to go play and be less obvious on his counting....try losing a little on occasion to make the house happy

I could be mistaken; but unlike Vegas, I've always been told that Atlantic City casinos cannot bar advantage players! They can shuffle up and limit amounts, but can't stop them from playing. ???? I'm highly skeptical!

Story doesn't make sense. AC cannot bar a card counter. It's against the law. I'm positive about this.

How do AC casino's deal with counters?
    1) adjust penetration.
    2) preferential shuffle.

Again, they CANNOT BAR A COUNTER.

I enjoyed the losing comment. Any counter will know, losing large sums of money is easy. It happens way too often.

Doesn't help much though. Most of my back-offs have occurred while I was down a few thousand.

Yeah you guys are right...is "backed off" a better phrase?

He was told he could play any other game in the casino but if he chose to play blackjack then they would make it difficult for him (and anyone else at the table) to play.

If someone says they always win (at slots, roulette, bj, or whatever, as I hear constantly), who am I to disagree? Let's just say that I remain skeptical! (Not that it matters, but I've made three dozen trips to AC from here.)

They can't even backoff counters in AC. Can cut your comps or shuffle though.

So the obvious answer is...sure he can play there again!

How long it takes them before they start shuffling every hand or lowering the max bet to $100 with a min bet of $100...I have no idea.

Definitely go back to the same casino then post back and let us know the results. I bet many people here are interested in the outcome.

Tell him to make a few non-basic strategy (but not too crazy) plays every now and then...stand on 16 against a 7... split 4s against a 3...that sort of thing... wait until the pit is monitoring play at your table to do these...maybe parlay a winning bet, even on a negative count.

I've been backed-off three separate times using my card at various MGM casinos. I still play BJ at these without a card (or a card I have with a 'new' name) and no facial recognition software has done anything or sussed me out.

I think facial recognition is highly overrated and the stuff you see on TV is way better than what is actually possible.

And the other posters are right. They can't trespass you or make you stop playing BJ in Atlantic City because you were counting. They'll make it uncountable by half-shoeing, making you flat bet or other counter-measures like that.

As you said, he was told he can not play. They just said they do not want him to do so.

So, even if they identify him, they will not stop him.

Not sure why all the explanations about law, etc are taking place. The OP made it clear his friend is still allowed to play there.

Will they remember him? Maybe, maybe not. But, if he starts playing well, they may well do the same thing. And, remember, there are MANY casinos in AC to play at.
