If I was, then this is a warning.

I went from McCarren to GN. I figured she would take the tunnel to 215 to 15. Before we hit the tunnel she checked with her dispatcher about traffic and he said there was traffic by 215. So she took Tropicana to 15 to GN. She did npt make any funny turns and the way seemed direct. It came to $38

On the way back she, different she, took 15 and got a phone call, which seemed sketchy, that there was an accident on tropicana so she took 15 to 215. Again, no funny turns. Fare came to $40.

The first time I could hear the dispatcher because it was a radio. On the way back the cell phone call seemed sketchy to.

The fares are higher than the taxi authority numbers. I thought 15 doesn't make a huge difference when it comes to going DT.

Sounds like a new way to longhaul(fake phone calls), the cheapest way is to avoid any freeways and take paradise, maybe $25 -$30 tops.

I agree. From the airport to downtown is Swenson-Harmon-Paradise up to the Stratopshere where it turns into Main street to Carson.

That is sooo annoying, why dont they stop this.

Millions spent on marketing to get people to come and then they turn a blind eye to this???

The hotel companies must have a huge voice and could get behind doing something about this.

its insane, in a customer first tourist town that this is allowed to happen.

biting the hand that feeds you...

    :grrr:

the taxi authority website says 22-27$ from airport to downtown. but it could be more if there is construction or heavy traffic. you can check next time if you have google maps. it will show you if there is traffic on the road the driver is saying has traffic. if there lying youll know they think your a dumb tourist they can scam.

Smartphone + Google Maps + Traffic = your friend

    Green for clear
    Yellow for slower
    Red for even slower
    Red/Black for horrid

It's free and I use every morning when I go to work in DC Metro area (I have 3 different ways to get there: all highway, Rt 1 (lots of timed lights), GW Parkway (some lights and....parkway).

If the all highway option is red, I go GW Parkway. If that's red, I go Rt 1.

Get a smartphone folks. It has way more practical uses than making phone calls.

Glad this was the only money you lost on your trip!!

In the end its really not worth worrying about. People get too defensive about a few bucks.

I know, I know, looking the other way justifies their theft but you know, you cant win em all so dont let it spoil things for you.

Its only a big deal if you make it a big deal.

I agree cousineddie. Part of me, the New Yorker, hates getting taken advantage of. Although I would use a different word. But I try to let it go and focus on what makes me happy. Although next time I know better, in a peaceful way.

I may be wrong but if the cab driver takes the tunnel 215-15 or Tropicana to 15 then either way the fare is going to be around $38 to $40 as you were charged. Heck it costs $23 to $30 to get to the strip if you are tunneled so $10 to $15 more is about right.

I believe that you should have said no tunnel and the fare would have been around what the taxi authority said.

I am pretty sure the TA suggested rate is based on surface streets and not the freeway. If that's not the case, they should update their prices. But my observation is that drivers will take in a heartbeat. I find it interesting that a driver would be getting advice on whether or not to use the 215. They aren't supposed to use the 215 without asking you first.

Ultimately I wish I had prepared by knowing the best route. The funny thing is the phone call scam.

I'm not losing sleep about it but it just enforces my opinion of Vegas cab drivers.

Had a similar experience in late September and the thought that it was a scam did cross my mind. Asked for Golden Nugget via Paradise to 4th. Guy said he'd be glad to take that way but traffic was bad, citing big convention, then pointing to the taxi line. Seeing how I was pissed it took 30 mins to get a taxi on a weekday I just said fine.

Good God, it sounds like new ways to long haul are always being invented. I think I will stick with the shuttle. Only $14 for rountrip. I don't mind the small amount of time it takes. With all the long hauling, it probably takes about the same time now. :grrr:

All you have to do is say, "that's ok, I'll relax in all that traffic", if there is alot of traffic/accidents, you can give him an extra tip, if not call him out.

    ahhh cabs ....LAST RESORT
I do a rental will cost less and I can choose to drive or not ...
it appears the o.p spent about 75 dollars or so for 2 rides .....wow ...no thanks
many people here try to justify the cost of cabs , but really it is just way out of line
vacation or not ....new York or las vegas I hate to get screwed
as someone pointed out ... the shuttle is very affordable ... why cab?...ever!
how bout we take the shuttle for say 15.00 , tip 22.50 each way and still spend 75.00?

I had no problem using the Bell transport last time I was there. Since I am too shy to speak up for myself (55 and have gotten better, but not ready to tangle with a stranger....), I think I will stick with the shuttle.

I like to know what I am paying - and I don't want to start my vacation being ticked off that I was ripped off and too lame to do anything about it!

Maybe I will toughen up in my old age....nahhhhhh....lol
