So I am traveling with 5 other buddies Nov 15-19. I am sure we will attempt to have a few meals together. This raises the question on whether or not the server will split the bill 6 ways?

The only reason I ask is b/c most the of the cash I bring is for gambling and tips. I charge everything. I "prefer" not to be forking over cash to a friend who covers the bill and vice versa.

I imagine these restaurants have sophisticated enough POS systems to split the bill however they like but Id prefer to hear about personal experiences you may have had in this type of situation.

No personal experiences here but maybe you could charge the whole bill and get the cash off friends - added gambling money that way if you are so inclined or it could be put into the bank to pay the card off?

I have had to do that before(dealing with a bachelor party with a bunch of cheapskates who wanted to nickel and dime everything and pay their share to the penny). In my experience I think its usually better off to let the waiter know from the beginning so they can ring them all up separately.

You can also ask them to only charge your card for a specific dollar amount and let the other guys pay in cash. That may be an easier and less awkward way.

You would think in a city like Las Vegas in 2013 it would be simple. I am just trying to avoid owing or being owed money but your points are well taken. Trust me, the more cash I have is the more I will blow. :drunk:

Ask the server up front, be nice about it and you'll be fine. It's kind of a pain for them, but it's done all the time. Now there'll be those on the board who'll say, "ask?"... "you tell them what you want them to do, it's their job!!!" That's definitely another way to go, but I find being extremely nice about it right up front makes the rest of the meal go a whole lot better.

If all your buddies have paypal they can use SMS text, or the paypal app, or mobile web.

One of you pays with a CC, and the rest would pay their share with their cell phone to the CC holder.

smh :rolleyes2: are you having fun on your hi horse for thinking your special because you ask instead of tell. everyone who wasnt born on a pig farm would ask instead of tell but you act like that makes you superior. :rolleyes2:

to the op let them know what you want up front but make it into as few seperate bills as you can, for example if some of your buddies are ok with having the same bill. splitting bills is common but the more bills there are the bigger pain for your server sometimes so tip accordiingly. :peace:

6 grown men and a waiter at your service and im sure you guys will be able to figure this one out at the restaurant. But incase it turns out to be mission impossible just ask for the manager and he/she will solve it for you.

Hope no one pays $25 for a salad then, lol. Of course if one of them gets a salad for dinner....friendship over.

I'm mixed on this. Now I hope it works out for you, but at some point, no matter how dedicated someone is, no matter how nice others are, server can spill over into slave. I guess a lot would depend on the restaurant, the load that night, how everyone is behaving and reacting. And this is a bit different than throwing six cards on the table and saying "add 20 and divide by six, please," which is a practice I still don't really condone.

    Different strokes.

But definitely broach the subject right up front, even better with the captain/maitre d'.

I empathize with traveling with cheapskates. My travel group has been together long enough that the one or two guys inclined toward that direction have gotten far better, though one at times still insists he wasn't in on ordering the second bottle of wine -- or whatever -- though he'd pour freely of it. But thankfully nobody does the balance-it-out-to-the-penny thing. We just rotate picking up the restaurant tab, grocery bill, whatever, and then money exchanges hands when we're home.

Most of the time the meals are put in by seat # and they can separate it however you want. They may get a few items(apps and drinks mixed up) but usually it is no problem for them to do it. I know when we went to PJ Clarkes with 6(3 couples) it was no problem. Same way at Hash House A GO GO.

Very good point. I dont think we will be eating at any super classy places knowing my friends. At worst, we can agree on a place and I will call ahead of time to verify the bill can be split...

when you split the bill evenly onto diffrent cards thats easy and common. even if you split it in your head yourself and tell them how much to charge on each card. they do that at my dads stores all the time when people want to split there purchase onto diffrent credit cards. it only takes a few seconds more.

i think the op is asking about splitting checks so each person has a seperate check only for what they ordered. the waiter can do that but they hate doing it for groups, go online and search for things waiters hate and its one of there pet peeves. but ask nicely and they will do it if there allowed because i know some people do that.

but if you just want to split it equaly you dont need to ask up front. just divide the total+tip by 6 and then give the waiter all the cards and say to put that much on each one. he will bring back 6 charge slips for everyone to sign.

Most places I've been will do it. We ask them upfront and tell them we'll make it worth their while. Outside of getting a few items on a wrong ticket, we've never had any issues or problems. And we each give them a few extra bucks.

Only issue with splitting it 6 ways evenly is there will inevitably be the guy who is ordering multiple $25 drinks. I think we all pretty much like to keep our own funds while in Vegas, and I'm not a fan of financing meals for other people (other than DH of course). Calling ahead is a great idea. Or just asking nicely. :licklips:

Ask up front. Not all places will do it. We were at Venetian in September and they would no split the check at all. They actually gave the excuse "our system doesn't allow for that." I don't remember which restaurant it was there. It was in restaurant row right off the casino.

Yea I think that is the most obvious problem. I love beer and liquor, but when I eat a meal, its usually ice tea which I sweeten or pop. I always like something sweet when I eat something salty. But yea, my $3 pop vs multiply $8+ mixed drinks or $6+ beers, I shouldnt have to pay for that. I know that makes me sound cheap but its just common sense.

This is usually the way to do it, and modern POS systems are set up to do this with the press of a button. The only caveat is that I'm seeing an increasing number of restaurants that have policies along the lines of "no more than 4 forms of payment", so it's possible you'd run into this. But just check up front and it shouldn't be a problem.
