After careful determination, I determined this deserves its own thread. I lost everything I loved about life moving to the Southwest. (I live in a horrible place.) One of the things that stung the worst for me was no more Italian hoagies. In New Mexico, outside of a few rare places, they put pastrami on an Italian sub. :Þ
On my earlier trips to Vegas, I was thrilled to find a Jersey Mike's.

During our last short trip, I grouponed two places that make Italian hoagies as good or better than those I had on the East Coast. They are Rocco's Italian Deli and Eastside Pizza.

If you are a misplaced East Coaster, these may be the places for you.

    Rocco's 1181 S. Buffalo Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89117

Eastside Pizza 1000 S Rampart Blvd Las Vegas, NV 89145

I don't know the distance from the Strip, but for me its irrelevant.

    jamesxnj,

You surprised me. I thought because older people moved from NY South there were a lot of Jewish Delis on Florida. I assumed the same would be true for Pizza and Italian Delis.

I don't know where I was, but there was Eastside Pizza, East Coast Pizza, and a Grimaldi's all within a mile in the same plaza.

It's all about the bread, tough to get a fresh roll with a hard crust and a soft pillow beneath in a land of soft crust white bread. The proper roll should be good for one day then turned into bread crumbs tomorrow. You should be able to get decent cold cuts like Boars Head, Thumans or Dietz and Watson in any major city. Never been to a Jersey Mikes, but I wonder if they are finishing off frozen, par baked rolls or proofing frozen dough and baking on location?

Yet another thing I lost. I've never had good bread outside of the East Coast. I heard it was available in a few rich places, like Santa Fe or San Francisco, but I never tried. Howeve, I do love I love the grilled bread and olive oil in Estiatorio Milos. (I need to get back there.)

For me, it's all abo0ut the gabbagul! Like I said, they put pastrami on Italian subs here. They may as well put green & red chili on them. :yuck:

Have you thought of baking your own? It is really not that difficult. It may not turn out like the bread back home but it would be a significant improvement over what you may be getting. Try google for recipes. It is usually Flour (of course), yeast, salt, sugar, water and olive oil. The trick is letting it rise and kneading it just right.

No, I never did. But, I generally try to avoid eating bread. I wanted to get a bread machine and make healthy bread, but according to the internet, I live at too high an altitude.

I loved the Itallian bread back East like hammie mentioned. You guys ever try Tony Luke's in Philly? The bread is so hard that the juicy cheesesteak filling, which would kill any other bread, won't even phase it.

They do bake on location here in FL and it is exactly the same as NJ bread.
Before they franchised out and opened one up in my area,I used to bring a few subs back on the plane with me with ice packs..once even opened up through security at ACY and my explanation was met with a nod that you can;t get a decent sub where I live.

Capriotti's across from Hard Rock casino on Paradise or at their other 6 locations, the best and the original from Wilmington Delaware. They use the best meats and they found rolls in Vegas that come all so close to the ones they have in all their east coast shops. Get the turkey sub, it is Thanksgiving on a roll.

I never knew this was from Delaware. For some reason, I don't think I ever bought an Italian from here. Do they not have them at all stores? Or did I skip it due to no capicola? Either way, I'll have to remedy that.

However, Roccos are actually bigger than Capriottis.

Capriottis started with one shop in Wilmington Delaware in the Italian neighborhood, now it's an institution. The Philly, New Jersey and Delaware region is hoagie heaven. As for Capriotti's Italian subs they are available in all their shops and if I am not mistaken have "gabagool".

May I recommend Pops on 501 S. Decatur Blvd. LV. Their rolls are flown in daily from Amoroso Baking Company in Philly. I've only tried the cheesesteak and they are great.

Pop's is good. I had a period where I refused there after I went to Tony Luke's, like, a week before and couldn't stand the weak bread. Any other time I went, no problem. I always found it just ok--I'm surprised they fly it in.

BTW-- got an e-mail from Restaurant.com saying Gerri's old Philadelphia (?) closed down.

Capriotti's has marvelous Italian subs. I would highly recommend as well.

We have been to both locations and they are very good.

Sorry, but Amoroso's used to make a good product, but changed the formula and it is now something in a plastic bag and has a multi day shelf life. It may be adequate in the vast land of white bread, but it won't hold up to the scrutiny of a true hard crust roll with a one day life. Good bread from a plastic bag does not exist in the real world, these are mutually exclusive environments. Bread needs to breathe and should be shipped in a paper bag. Yes, there is a plastic bag that has a vapor barrier for rolls, but its crap. Sorry, I'm a bread snob, I will go out of my way to pick up crusty rye in North Jersey.

schwaiguy if you go to Tony Luke's, try the roast pork Italian with broccoli rabe sautéed in garlic and olive oil topped with provolone. It is the better than a Philly cheesesteak.

LMFAO, hammie. I had it and hated it. My wife was pissed because I took all the broccoli off and just ate pork & provolone. I'm the first to admit that sometimes I'm a hick when it comes to food. I've branched out a lot, but I still have strong tastes.

Schwaiguy, you CAN bake bread at a higher altitude but the recipes sometimes have to be adjusted a little. I live at 5280' and bake bread... I have a bread machine; I find that if I use it in the manual mode, then take it out, shape it, and let it do a final rise and then bake it in the oven, it comes out great. Information on high altitude bread baking should be easily googled online.

What I miss the most from the east coast (born and raised in Boston, but have lived in Colorado and Utah my whole adult life) is really good Chinese food - you know, dark, rich fried rice and really good sticky spare ribs. And don't even get me started on seafood, particularly fried clams.

Fake Chinese food, East Coast/NY Chinese food, or authentic? There are lots of good, cheap, authentic Chinese places throughout Vegas.
