i was playing at mgm on a week day nite very slow alot of bj tables open.

i was playing 100 - 500 a hand. i was in the middle of the shoe and i guy wanted to sit and buy in for 200$ and i asked him nice if he would mind waiting for the shoe to end. they left and sat down at the table next to me to play as i said it was empty in the casino.

the pit criiter comes and say you cant ask them to to sit out as its not a private table ,only if they ask you if you mind if if come can you answer.

i told him i have no problem if they came in i would have been happy to color up and move on it was just curtisy and that was it. he was kinda rude when addressing situation.:grrr:

The pitboss here is a moron. It's not like you said get the f away, you asked nicely if he could wait. He could have waited and then sat down. That other table was open so that meant he could sit there. Maybe he was having a bad night or something.

Yikes - I never heard that one before! There's certainly nothing wrong in politely asking a new player if he'd mind waiting (the key word being "politely"), and I'm surprised the pit critter said anything, especially to someone playing at your level. But to answer your question, I don't know what I'd do! It sounds like you tried to explain things without success, so it would probably be a losing battle to pursue it further. So in that case, I'd probably have to get up and leave, as the episode would have upset me to the point where I'd be thinking about it more than my game. (Of course, if you were raking in the chips that would be entirely different, and possibly why the boss was being an a-hole.) Sorry you had to put up with that nonsense.

I don't think there's anything wrong with you asking them to wait. There's no "rule" that says you have to wait for them to ask you if you mind, lol.

I don’t really get what the PB was upset about. The guy could have said, “yes, I do mind” and played anyway if he wanted. It’s not like you prevented someone from playing.

I think it's rude to ask anyone to wait through half a SHOE. Wait for the end of a two-deck shuffle, that's OK, but not a shoe. Waiting for 100 or 150 more cards to be dealt is too much. That could be 28 more hands.

And of course, keeping him out has zero effect on your chances.

Unless the casino has a no-mid-deck entry rule, people should be able to join a shoe game at any time without asking 'permission'.

I just sit down and give the dealer my money. It's easier for me, the dealer, and ultimately the other players because I don't even give them an opening to be rude. I have no idea where this got started that the players at the table have the right to have no new players join for the rest of the shoe. It's seldom the casino's rule.

This was handled by the patrons without any cause for the Pit boss to say a word. He didn't lose any players, and everyone stayed happy, that is until he said something to you.

As a joiner to a table I'll always ask if a player is alone if he minds if I sit, or if I'm joining to someones right and they are first I'll ask(some like to be first base even if they are not sitting there depending on the cards). If I'm joining and someone is polite and asks me to wait, I have no problem whatsoever. If they are A-holes then I would go out of my way to be UNaccommodating.

I agree. I find it rude to ask someone to wait…I find it equally rude for newcomers not to ask if the table would like them to wait.

It is not rude to "ask"... not a single person on this thread has said it is a "right" to have no new players mid shoe. It is a common courtesy among high limit BJ tables to ask. It has nothing to do with changing your odds; it has to do with gamblers superstition, mojo, etc - all intangibles, but also the trademark behaviors of higher limit BJ players.

So long as there are plenty of other tables and you are polite, there is nothing at all wrong with asking. In fact, I think it would have been rude to sit down at the table in the situation described by the OP.

First, the pit boss acted a bit odd in this case. I might be able to understand his point of view, but it just seemed like he didn't need to get involved at all. The only justification I can see is that if the pit boss felt the OP was effectively trying to get a private table.

I feel the OP was actually being a little rude if there was truly half the shoe remaining. That just feels like a bit much to ask someone to wait through on a table that is 1 on 1. I know if I was the one being asked, I wouldn't care and would move on to another table. But I do know I would never ask someone to wait that long.

Now on the topic that this may be common courtesy for higher limit BJ players, I got the impression the OP wasn't sitting at a higher limit table. A lot of my beliefs change if this was $100 minimum and someone was going to buy in for $200. I will treat someone differently at a $100 table vs $15 table. This is mainly because there is a reason they choose to play on a $100 table and I want to respect that. $500 bets on a $15 table to me means you want to bet a lot of money but have the low limit table experience. They expect some idiot to come in and split tens. :)

I just want to add that I don't think paperposter did anything wrong. Even if the person thought he was being rude, that certainly isn't a crime. If someone sits down and starts smoking right next to me I will get up and move. I also don't hide the fact that it is due to the smoke. I have left tables for many other reasons as well.

The pit boss coming over was certainly strange though. I guess they thought you were trying to force your own table. I've just never seen them care that much if the casino isn't busy. Although I guess if they were busy, they would have been busy with other things and never noticed the interaction. :)

it was a high limit table and he came with 8 20$ to buy in so as i said he wasnt realy going to be long and he just went to table next me ,it was a wensday and not crowed at midnight at all.

in fact i sat down at 10 $ table to and asked them to raise it today just to ovoid the problem at a differnt casino.

Like jdvegas said, you didn't do anything unusual. Its common and pretty much the norm. I always ask before I jump in and usually just wait until the shuffle anyway, unless they insist I get in to "change things up" or whatever. There's nothing unusual about politely asking someone to wait until the shuffle either if you're on a roll, especially at those higher limits paperposter was playing at.

I don't think there was anything else you could have done, you explained to him it was just a common courtesy and you asked politely.

I would also remind him its better for the casino to have 2 players on 2 tables versus 2 players on 1 table, as long as both tables were going to be open anyway.

If i was the other player i would have been mad and sat down at the table just to piss you off

Asking to raise the table limit to chase away other players isnt cool either in my book

    I encounter this scenario often.

I backcount- stand behind the players and backcount the shoe. If/when the count is high enough that I have an advantage, I jump in. Sometimes a player at the table will ask me to wait. I just ignore them and play. I don't mean to be rude, but I play for profit, and when I have an advantage I must get my money on the felt. Really, I don't give a damn what the players think.

And these players asking me to wait are just ploppies worried about "the flow of the cards" or some other voodoo nonsense. I would NEVER jump in on another counter- don't want the exposure. It's easy to tell if a player at the table is counting.

And if you reverse the situation- if another player wants to enter a game in a positive count, you betcha I will ask them to wait. I don't want to share a rich deck with another player. Again, I'm not there to make friends. I play for money.
